There is a $5 membership fee to join, which we didn't mind. I ordered one of their specialty cocktails from the menu and it was very good. My wife ordered a Cosmo, however, and unfortunately hers was a completely different story. Instead of a traditional Cosmo, it was made with a very heavy amount of lime juice. It was cloudy, extremely lime-forward, and simply wasn't what she ordered or expected. She didn't even finish it. This is one of my pet peeves with cocktails: if someone orders a standard drink--a Cosmo, margarita, etc.--make the standard drink unless they ask for something different. A bartender's personal flair can be great in a house specialty, but it shouldn't automatically be added to a classic cocktail. When the bartender noticed she hadn't finished it, he said, "You should have told me." Fair enough--but once we explained that she didn't like the drink, we were still charged for it. That was disappointing. What makes it more frustrating is that my wife had been here previously and another bartender made her Cosmo perfectly, which is one reason we came back. Overall, the Blind Elephant has a lot going for it. The atmosphere is terrific, my specialty cocktail was excellent, and we really like the concept. The waitress said the chef was not making soup because it was hot outside. We scratched our heads at that comment. My friend ended up ordering the steak salad. The fried chicken sandwich and other salad didn't show up....for long time. The waitress could have brought the salad out. Something happened that the kitchen dropped the ball on his order. He had to ask for his blue cheese dressing and the waitress looked at the bowl that was in front of me with an expression that made us think we did have to share it. It was enough for one salad, not two. She did bring out some for him. My friends steak salad was served in a huge, deep bowl. The amount of salad could have fed all four of us. It was topped with the steak, which wasn't a big portion and on the dry side. I was disappointed with the Shepherd's pie. The mashed potatoes, thick dollops instead of the potatoes spread out in an even layer, were on the dry side, not creamy at all. The ground beef and vegetables were okay, just not a lot of flavor. My husband's fish and chips were very good. A big piece of battered fish! The fries were good too. It was probably the best meal of the night. The waitress gave a 10% discount to our friend who had to wait a long time for his meal. My husband and I also got a 10% discount, which was unnecessary. Honestly, our friend's meal should have been taken off the bill in its entirety. Then when we get the bill, there is some sort of surcharge, which the waitress couldn't explain was it was for. The staff should know, and it should be annotated on the menu. Be up front with your extra charges, don't make customers find out at the end of the meal. I even heard one person at the table next to us also question this surcharge. Overall, a disappointing dinner. There were too many negatives over positives. We did note that there were only two waitresses and if I remember correctly, ours was fairly new to the place. But what happened with the missing meal that took so long to get to the table? Owner Ray Baca, has created a dream space for any event planner. The walls are original historic brick, and the furnishing is clean and modern. My favorite feature is the raw feel; this space can easily be outfitted to fit any event. The venue is also unique because of the kitchen and easy setup space for catering. You will not find another venue of this caliber with this unique setup anywhere is downtown Wilmington. The central location is also wonderful if the weddings located in downtown Wilmington. I am using this venue to host a business owner's info session. Mr. Baca has been a pleasure to work with and I hope to host other events here in the future.
