Paul at Allied worked with me over the course of four months figuring out the best way to deal with the problem. The solution was a channel drain that would lead to my existing gutter drainage system. Because of the topography of my existing driveway, I assumed that there would still be a fair amount of puddling even after the drain was installed and that I would just have to live with it. In the days just after the install however, it rained quite a bit, and the drain worked pretty much perfectly. The puddling has been reduced by about 95%, and the water that does collect is shallow enough to handle easily. After the rain stops, the remains evaporate after a few hours. The small lake that I used to have to walk around is gone. The guys who did the install were professional and very courteous and Paul was very knowledgeable and patient in response to my many, many questions and emails leading up to the install. Given the scope and importance of the project, I wanted to share a complete and thoughtful perspective. Overall Experience From intake through execution, the experience was strong. The consultation was detailed, the proposed solution was clearly explained, and the permitting and engineering process -- which took a couple of months -- was handled smoothly with consistent updates. The crew worked efficiently, and the quality of the foundation work itself was solid. The Consultation & Planning Our home sits on a steep slope, and an addition at the back had begun to settle. Groundworks sent out Jerry for the initial consultation, and he was excellent. Jerry was knowledgeable, energetic, and charismatic, and he took the time to clearly walk us through the problem, the proposed solutions, and what a job of this scale would realistically involve. He explained the engineering considerations in plain language, answered questions thoroughly, and helped us understand both the risks and the long-term benefits of doing the work properly. From an intake and planning standpoint, we felt confident moving forward. The Project The scope of work was extensive and involved foundation reinforcement along the entire back of our house, as well as drilling and post installation outside of the foundation to properly support a failing rear addition. Because much of this work needed to be performed beneath and adjacent to our back deck, deck access was required. We discussed these access needs ahead of time, and I even removed the top decking myself to reduce labor costs, based on our shared understanding of what would be necessary. A Miscommunication (and What Happened Next) While I was out of town during part of the work, a miscommunication occurred on site regarding what deck changes were permitted. As a result, the deck was dismantled more extensively than any of us had anticipated. This was understandably frustrating -- not because anyone did something wrong, but because the situation was genuinely complex and confusing. It was a conversation that perhaps should have been extremely clear about what was happening, but it wasn't -- and it wasn't the fault of any single party. Once the issue was identified and elevated, senior leadership stepped in, and this is where Groundworks truly distinguished itself. Leadership Response & Resolution We ultimately worked directly with Nathan Malsch, the General Manager, who was professional, attentive, and genuinely committed to making things right. Initially, we discussed a 50/50 split on replacement lumber for rebuilding the deck. Nathan went well beyond that agreement. Groundworks purchased more than enough lumber for a full deck rebuild, had it delivered directly to our home, and even provided a Milwaukee impact driver/screwgun set along with Milwaukee bits to help with reconstruction! That level of ownership was frankly unexpected and deeply appreciated. It wasn't just about compensation -- it was about leadership taking responsibility and ensuring we felt supported after a frustrating situation. Final Takeaway Large foundation projects are complex. Two months later they came back and changed out 3 grated clean out covers with ones that have filtering screening on them to address insects hatching out of the clean outs. This was my first time hiring a contractor. I had previously acted as the general contractor for our other two bathrooms, and my husband and I did those remodels ourselves, so I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted--and also plenty of lessons to learn along the way! One of the biggest advantages of working with Doru was his pricing. His quote was extremely competitive compared with other contractors in the area, some of whom quoted us 2-3 times more. We did have to manage purchasing our own cabinets, tub, tile, lighting, fixtures, etc., but that gave us the flexibility to shop at our preferred stores and save money. **A couple of lessons I learned:** Make sure you have all of your materials onsite before construction starts. There were a few times we were waiting for items I had ordered, which slowed things down. Had I used some of Doru's preferred suppliers, that probably wouldn't have happened. Also, if possible, I recommend having someone home during construction. I couldn't be home because of work, but my husband was, and that worked out well. Doru was consistently on time--sometimes even early--which is rare in the construction industry. He's also incredibly versatile and was able to handle a variety of jobs himself, including light electrical work such as changing light types and wiring and installing/replacing electrical outlets. The only time he brought in an electrician was for our heated floors because they required additional breakers in our electrical panel. And by the way, **I highly recommend heated bathroom floors!** They aren't hot; they're just comfortably warm/room temperature, which means no more freezing feet first thing in the morning. The project started with demolition, which Doru completed in just **one day**. From there, he handled the framing and coordinated his regular team of skilled subcontractors. One thing I appreciated about Doru is that he genuinely wants you to be happy with the final product. He doesn't try to push his own design preferences on you. When I asked for his opinion, he would explain the pros and cons of different options, but ultimately left the decision to me. I changed my mind a couple of times during the project--including the ceiling lighting and tub surround--and even though those changes created additional work, he made the requested changes without charging us extra. His team was excellent as well. Emmanuel, his tile professional, did an incredible job and really made the bathroom come together. He also installed our cabinets and crown molding, and his attention to detail was impressive. The drywall professional was extremely fast and efficient using Quick Set 5. We did need a second trip because of some ceiling corrections, but overall the work moved along quickly. Our project took about six weeks from start to finish, although some of that time was due to delays with materials I had selected and our family vacations. Realistically, I think the actual construction could have been completed in around four weeks if everything had been onsite and we hadn't had scheduling interruptions. What really stood out to me was Doru's follow-through. He has checked in with us multiple times since the project was completed to make sure we're still happy with everything. We are! I actually made one poor choice myself when selecting our tub faucet--it takes about 20 minutes to fill our large tub. Doru even offered to come back and replace it once I find a better faucet, which says a lot about the kind of contractor he is. **If you're looking for a highly skilled, dependable contractor at a competitive price, I would absolutely recommend Eagle Remodel and Construction.** I think they're an especially great choice if you're comfortable purchasing your own tile, cabinets, fixtures, lighting, tub, etc. and want more control over your budget and selections. If you're looking for a completely hands-off experience where you walk into a showroom, select everything through the contractor, and have them handle every purchase, a larger remodeling company may be a better fit--but you'll likely pay significantly more for that convenience.
