I hadn't planned on getting my driveway paved this year but after seeing the work they were doing for my neighbor and speaking with Patrick Carroll I decided to go ahead with the project. They completed it the same day and it was beautiful. However, when it rained because of the way my driveway sits on a decline I decided the water should be diverted to the side. I called him and left a message. Mr. Carroll called me back and said they would be happy to come back and add a berm to redirect the runoff. He had his crew there a few days later and added the berm. He said he just wanted to make sure I was happy and satisfied with their work which I am very much. It's getting harder to find people who take pride in their work and do a great job like he and his crew did for me. I am very pleased and grateful. read more

This is my first review I've ever posted. I've never been so disappointed with a job and a business owner. The lack of communication and attention from John Carrol, the owner, to make a job right that they installed incorrectly is infuriating. Job Started 2/21/2023 finished 2/22/2023 PROBLEMS: Hit my metal fence and bent it with stone compactor, bent back in shape by hand, did not offer to replace the section. Cut my fios fiber optic cable We had a big dip in the driveway, it was so deep and that when the poured the asphalt and compacted, the edge came in 6-8 inches because. Its also so deep that after driving on it cars have compacted it more so the driveway dips a few inches again. This part was not done right. John promised the new edges wouldn't be steep because of the way they form the edges. Having paved over several layers of driveway they created a big stepdown to the grass. I have since spend thousands of dollars adding soil to the edges and seeding. This was not expected, John sold the job as if this would not be an issue at all. They drain pipes for me before laying the driveway but after adding soil and reworking the pipes we found them full of water because they were not sloping down hill. I had to take an important section out because it was just holding water. This created gouges in the driveway and a bigger puddle and the water still comes in the garage. Because of the surface damage to they sealed the driveway at no cost but I still have the problem 3/15/23 - Johns response - refuted everything about the edges, told me that he did the sealcoat as a favor and that he'd install a French drain at cost 3/20/23 I responded to all of his comments, and I have not heard a word since. Had the driveway been installed sloping away from my house with no puddles from day 1 or had the fix been to rip out the driveway in front of the garage and do it right I would be happy but instead John has not responded since, today is 5/30/24, and I still have water coming in my garage and a giant puddle after every time it rains. 2025 - I've given John countless opportunities to come fix his companies mistakes and they are yet to show up to make it right. Spend the extra money, use a company that stands behind their work and makes their mistakes right. read more

We had our driveway completely redone in 2020. Their employees showed up, did their job and left. The problem I have is not with the workers, but with the owner. I sent him a text after the job was done, highlighting a drainage issue their job created. He repeatedly told me he would come out and look at it. He NEVER showed up. I ran into him at the Frederick Home show and told him about what happened. He said I should text him. I was able to show him on my phone I DID text him- he confirmed it was his number. He told me AGAIN "I'll be out tomorrow and look at it". That was Sept 2 and still NOTHING. Do not expect them to give two hoots if there is any issues. If the owner himself does not care? You got nothing!! Choose any other contractor to get your work done. read more

We had the same issue. The sealed our long driveway, all the time making comments like "Oh that homeowner c**p that you buy at Home depot is junk" "Our product better." Well a month after the job a fair sized portion of the sealer WASHED OFF. I had them come back which they did after about 6 calls and a month. They took NO responsibility - kind of a "stuff happens". They added another layer to the portion that had washed off. Now three months later there are other places washing off. YOU WILL BE SORRY I had problems with my driveway within 2 weeks after it was installed. It took about 2 months to get get John Carrol to look at it and agree to fix the problems the next time they were going to be in the area. Even though they paved many driveways within a 2 miles from me. Call after call for the next 6 months they showed up when I was out of town. John Carrol sends me a video thinking I couldn't see the torch heating the cold asphalt on a 38 deg day. Fix was a lie and created more of a problem. For the next 2 years, many times was promissed to fix all the problems that had come up. Including big cracks in the entrance area, sinking areas where your tires sat and the asphalt stone surface was coming up due to the material not being hot enough when applied and not compacted correctly. The only way to slow the surface from coming up was to seal it. That didn't fix the other problems with the material and workmanship I had asked for in writing a gaurentee and that he will fix the problems and show up. John Carrol had only said he would fix problems and be there in the spring. Since then I have not seen them in the area. NO SHOW, NOT FIXED, AND VERY SORRY I USED THEM. DO NOT USE THEM read more

These guys have been to our house almost a half a dozen times asking us if we want our blacktop done. We are not the owners of the property and we keep telling them over and over again. We are not interested. Evidently their business is really slow and keep bothering us the very last time. Some drunk old guy showed up. I guess the owner knocked on our door and said he was selling medical marijuana and laughed. We shut the door. He knocked on it again and said he wanted to do our blacktop. My husband informed him very firmly not to ever come back to our property again and stop harassing us. The police will be called next time. I assume they are getting ready to go out of business and are desperate to drum up business but this is a horrible way to do it. They Don't make any notations of where they stopped to solicit business so they keep getting everyone mixed up of where they were very unbusiness like and ridiculous. With all of the bad reviews I saw it didn't surprise me. read more

They used a spray to seal my driveway and the over spray is about 6 inched into the grass. I asked if it rained before the spray had a time to cure would it have any effect on it. The answer was no and then it did rain and the tar splashed up on the garage doors and house. I emailed them and then spoke with them and the folks came back and cleaned the tar off the doors and I had to ask them what about the bricks then they tried to clean that. There was 4 folks that came out and 2 mostly just stood around. They did respray the driveway to made it right. Used my garden hose and there is tar on it. read more

We knew we needed a new driveway, but felt that the "possible" cost made it a project to put off for another time. A number of our neighbors were getting their driveways done, so the knock on our door one afternoon was not a total shock. We have a very long driveway with a number of arteries off of it, so our thought was this project maybe close to the $10,000 range. A family member had their driveway complete for around that and we have more area to cover then they do. John asked if we would like an estimate since they were in the neighborhood, and we decided it was a good idea so that we might be able to save up for another time. The number he quoted us was really good and hard to pass up. John said they could do the driveway on Saturday, however it was Easter weekend and we had family coming that same day. John understood and worked it out for the work to be completed the next day. He even stated that an artery driveway we have "did not need to be repaved" and was "in good shape" and suggested that we just fill in a few cracks and seal it ourselves in the fall which would save us about $1,500. The crew arrived very early and started the work. They bulldozed the high spots and cut out the outlines of the entire drive. They were very polite and answered a few questions I had as they started. They cut an expansion portion where the artery driveway starts and at the end of the drive where the street is. These areas look great and after we seal will be hard to see. We are very pleased with the way the driveway turned out and our friends and family who have come to the house tell us that it totally gives the house more curb appeal. I would recommend using them in the future based on our experience with John and his crew. They left the job clean and made sure to get their "spoils" removed. John even came back early Saturday morning to check in with us and see if we were satisfied. read more

So I am looking out my window one fine morning and notice a big truck in front of our drive way with a trailer behind it. They offload some sort of machinery and I see that they are re-paving our neighbor's driveway. I walk away... and that is the last our mailbox will ever be whole. About 10 minutes later I walk past the window again and this time I see one of the D and H Paving workers kneeling in front of our mailbox which happens to be laying on the grass in a couple of pieces. Apparently the man is trying to put it back together. He eventually does, but never once does he come up to the house to say something like, "Oh, by the way, I accidentally destroyed your mailbox and screwed the pieces back together." No, I watch as he puts it back together (as best as possible) and then carries on to his own work a few drive ways down. I later walked out to look at the mailbox and noticed a new gash in the wood and some screws in the side. I understand mistakes happen. But when they do, at least have the courtesy to own up to them and let us know. Don't try to put it back together and then walk off like nothing every happened. PEOPLE PLEASE STAY CLEAR OF THIS PLACE!!!! I hired D&H to pave my driveway. I paid them before the job was done, what a MISTAKE! There were white marks all over the driveway and a huge hump in the middle of the driveway where they ran out of Blacktop. They had to come back the next day to restart it. I called them and they did come back and just made things worse by leaving marks all over the driveway where they patched new paving. I called them for the second time to come back because of all the imperfections. John had an attitude about it because he didn't want to come back. I called John for the third time but he never responded to any of my calls. I simply want what I paid for and that's it! With all of the stained marks it looks like the kids were playing with chalk in my driveway. John, if you pride yourself in your business you need to make this right. Patrick Carroll with D&H Paving ( here on out will be Contractor) layed asphalt millings on my driveway and told me it would last at least 3 years. Three weeks later the millings had washed away to the point that ruts were left after a rain. I contacted Contractor and ask him to fix the problem. Approximately 6 weeks later Contractor regraded the driveway. Shortly thereafter it would rain and ruts would occur again. Contractor came out again and regraded the driveway and added more millings. This would have been around September 2014. Shortly thereafter, after some rains, the driveway was in very bad shape. I contacted the Contractor in November and asked him to repair the driveway. Contractor told me that he was shut down for the winter and he would come back in the spring. During the winter of 2014-2015 when it snowed our family could not drive up or down the 1,000 foot driveway to our home. The ruts were too deep to use a snowblower and a private snow plow contractor could have broke his equipment due to the 4-8 inch ruts. My wife had to take our kindergartener through the woods to our neighbors who were gracious enough to allow my wife to park her car on their property when we could not access our house. I parked my work truck at the bottom of the driveway and walked down to it in the morning and walked back up to the in the evening. In February 2015 I demanded a refund. Contractor declined. I filed a complaint with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission. I went through all the hearings and in the end I was denied a refund through the Maryland Home Improvement Commission Guaranty because apparently I did not give Contractor a third attempt to fix the driveway. Contractor lied during the hearing with the Administrative Law Judge. Contractor's attorney twisted the facts and portrayed me as a guilty subject. I received the Opinion and Order from the Circuit Court in Frederick County, MD. which states that I get nothing. Civil suit will be next. read more

DO NOT USE D&H. On June 28th a crew from D&H showed up at my house and started work on my driveway. The issue is I DID NOT REQUEST ANY WORK! I stopped them and told them that i think they were supposed to be at my neighbors house and they cleaned up and went over there. They drove through my yard, killed my grass, and rutted up the yard. I contacted the owner and after a brief phone call (he basically hung up on me) he has not responded. DO NOT USE D&H they cannot even get an address right. They were going back to my neighbors to repair the work they did for him in the first place. read more

D & H (John C) came by my house in March, reviewed what I wanted done, gave me a quote. I accepted their bid, John C ackowledged acceptance. Kept calling him to set up a time. He said when the weather warms up, and his other Westminster jobs are ready, they would pave my driveway. Weeks passed, numerous calls, few responses, and then no return calls at all. I thought we had a firm acceptance from D & H, but I guess that wasn't the case. What a way to run a business, make a commitment, then don't follow through. A few days ago, a fellow came to the door that I recognized from the last time we had our drive way sealed. The price then was $1,500 but in 2012 was up to $4,500 and I was told that was a discounted fee as his trucks are in the area. As I said, this was the same guy who did it initially and had to be called back not once but twice more (and oh what a long time to get a response!) to 'fix' the initial job. He got so Angry by the second call back that he kicked a 5 gallon mud bucket up our driveway. Obviously this is not a recommendation. From the looks of the other reviews, I guess that I should be happy that they never showed up. We signed a contract in April 2014. They set up an install date of 6/16. Never called, never showed. When I called John, he stated that his brother in law Henry did the contract and he was unaware of the job. After NUMEROUS phone calls and broken promised install dates, we decided to look elsewhere. I am not sure if I would not pick this paving company again or not. Their price was very reasonable. The driveway looks pretty good. My big concerns are the fact the employees smoked on the job and ate chicken and left the bones all over the yard for us to clean up. They also hit our house in the process of paving and knocked the 20-year-old brick off. We are pretty sure they would not have said anything but my husband was home when they hit the house and went out to question. When I called the owner he said they would fix it and that I should get some estimates. Only one mason called me back and completed the job which was made extra hard by the fact that they don't make the brick anymore. The cost of the repair was deducted from our bill. The owner worked to make the situation better for others in the future. read more

D and H Paving was repaving a driveway in our neighborhood so 3 of us hired them to redo our asphalt driveways. The work was started the same day since they were in the neighborhood and finished the next, however there was damage to our grass and the concrete apron of our driveway and our brand-new brick walkway had dried asphalt all over it. My husband was able to get the asphalt off the brick walkway but not the apron so I contacted the owner and he promised to have the driveway apron sand blasted but with each phone call I made to him he said the person who was going to do this wasn't available yet. At this point the owner is not responding to my calls and I have heard nothing. I do not recommend using this company based on their poor follow-up when there are problems. read more

D&H Paving excavated the area nearest our garage door which was sagging. The added bluestone to a section off the existing driveway for additional asphalt and parking. Then they added new asphalt across the entire driveway for a complete new driveway. They were fast, and cared about the quality as they laid the asphalt. I believe being with contractors while the job is in progress is very important and once done I was very happy with the job and it's now been two years and the driveway still looks great. D&H Paving has done many other driveways in Poolesville with a similar result. I would use them again. I have read bad reviews about them but I guess I just got caught them on a good day or perhaps a homeowner being there brings a better result. read more
