SAT 1/17/26 2pm 6 adults__I chose Cypress Tavern for a late celebration Christmas luncheon with family for these reasons: (1) it was mutually convenient for us to travel to, (2) the online reviews were very good, (3) the photos (on YELP) were very inviting, (4) the menu was extensive so I was confident that everyone could find something they would enjoy. We had several glasses of wine, we had appetizers, we had French onion soup, we had pizza, we had linguine with clams, we had steak, we had tuna, we had dessert. We had so much food, we brought some home too! Kathy, our excellent server and photographer, took great care of us. It was so nice to watch the sunset on the snow as it was being plowed in the parking lot and the fire burning in their fireplace. Always a great time at Cypress Tavern and this was no different. My granddaughter's first time and she loved it. We sat outside and listened to the band and watched Miss Margot dance to the music. Had the pleasure of stopping by Cypress after a hike nearby and enjoyed a delicious lunch. Service was friendly and food was fresh with generous portions. I have been here so many times due to proximity for my family. I look at going out as a treat, since I don't have to cook or clean up--not feel annoyed or like I could have cooked a better meal. Overpriced food is sub-par, but the service is atrocious. I have come in after my family was seated and the waitress, who has served us many times, doesn't even acknowledge my arrival, hand me a menu or ask if I would like to order anything. And I have had to hunt her down just to get a glass of water. My sister has thrown events here, celebrated birthdays -- and I won't ever come back. We had reservations on a Friday night . The place looked great & the menu looked great. I was looking fwd to good Greek food. Our table for 4 was tiny & tables are cramped. 1st it was before 8pm on a Friday & they were out of captn morgan. Sangria wasnt great either. They seemed to be low on garnishes, as all they could provide was an ugly orange rind for a glass of blue moon. Then the food started coming out. One dish worse than the other. Ive never seen a spanikopita look like a burrito and the taste was horrible. Lamb kabobs were dry and tasteless. The French onion soup was horrendous. The onions were hard & I cannot identify the taste. The steak sandwich had very little meat & wasnt good. The only decent thing in our table was the fries. We noticed many full plates being uneaten. The staff either didnt notice or was used to it.The server was did a great job and was very accommodating. The band was really great too, and saved the night. But this place needs help. Too many menus. Concentrate on a having few good dishes in instead of a 100 bad ones. I really wanted to love this place. I hope they can turn things around. We've been to Cypress Tavern several times. Their food is consistently excellent. But last weekend we were very disappointed at our treatment. My wife and I are both in our late 70s. I have a difficult time climbing stairs, and it isn't possible for me to sit on bar stools or chairs at high tables. After making a reservation through Open Table, we arrived at 5:20. The restaurant was empty. We were told that the only tables were a high top table, the bar or upstairs. They were not able (or willing) to make accommodations for us at any of the conventional tables, which we were told "were reserved for the band." You can see the length of the staircase and the height of the seating they offered. It is unlikely that we'll return, at least not for dinner. read more

I attended a wedding there and was very disappointed. First of all the appetizers should have had its own serving spoons, you shouldn't have to use your own utensils to get the food from family style dishes. They came around and served bread to our plate, but if you weren't seated, you had to get the server to give you bread. For the dinner, since they didn't know who at the table ordered the chicken, salmon or steak entree, (you had to put what you wanted to eat on the invitation) They were just bringing everything to the table and asking who got what dinner. They served me a chicken franchisee dinner without anything else, while everyone got some kind of vegetables on their dish. I asked the server where were my vegetables and she replied, I have to wait until everyone else got served. I waited while everyone was eating their food, and reminded her again that I didn't get the rest of my dinner. She seemed annoyed and came back with a small bowl of dried out cold potatoes and squash. At 9:50 pm they started collecting the sugar holders from the tables, but never put coffee out. A guest next to me asked for coffee, they said they weren't allowed to serve after 10:00 pm. So there wasn't any coffee served. This restaurant is not a place to have a party. The only asset was the server named Pat, whom was very nice and seemed to care. read more

The service was great--all of our waitstaff was prompt, pleasant, and professional. I was disappointed, though not surprised, at the quality of the food. When a menu is that large (from wings to grilled octopus, and burgers to moussaka), it's impossible for food to be executed well. The Greek dip platter was three indistinguishable dips. All I could taste was vinegar. The mussels appetizer was served with 4 still-closed mussels... which means they're dead and not fit to eat. I've never been served that many closed shellfish before. The chicken gyro platter had absolutely no flavor on the chicken. The soups were fine, as was the moussaka. We won't be returning. read more

It's a restaurant that benefits from its captive audience. We came here in the winter thinking there was an happy hour, but were told that they didn't do that anymore. With HH in mind, we ordered a couple appetizers, Saganaki ($13), Bleu Moon Burger ($17) and some garlic parm wings ($15). Both the burger and wings were on the drier side. The saganaki was flambeed, which was a cool presentation, but it didn't really add any flavor to this block of cheese. In all, it was overpriced considering the quality of these dishes. The place was too large to be so dead, but I guess that's unsurprising for a weekday. Our server was attentive considering that there weren't too many diners to tend to. Based on previous reviews, I'm going to give this the benefit of the doubt that it was just an off day. While I wasn't wowed by the food here, it wasn't so terrible that I wouldn't give it another try. Perhaps the greek dishes are better? Perhaps it's livelier in the summer? read more

This was an extremely rough experience. The owner, who said her name was Katie introduced herself to us right in the beginning and came by again. She was wildly rude to the waitstaff to the point where I considered walking out. I've never seen it at a restaurant in my life. In term's of food My Filet Mignon came out cooked basically as a hockey puck after I asked for medium rare and it was never fixed. My wife's food was fine but everything else left a bad taste in our mouth. Oue server was a very nice young girl and she tried to do everything to fix our meal but the owner's seem too concerned with just about everything else other than fixing our dish. read more

Great place I've always enjoyed coming to, but....I'm not sure in what world anyone would "butterfly" a filet mignon, unless it's not actually filet mignon. I've cooked my share of both filet and whole tenderloins and what I was served tonight isn't even the same texture of meat that a filet should be. Either they're getting ripped off by their meat vendor or they're just lying to their customers. It's a shame. read more

We were served bad octopus. The smell was so terrible it was IMPOSSIBLE to miss. It smelled like a DEAD ANIMAL. We sent it back and it was removed from the check. They also gave us a plate of old pastries as an apology. It was insulting and I will be sure to let our friends and family know that this place cannot be trusted. If they are capable of 1) keeping bad food in the fridge, 2) cooking it despite of the smell 3) and serving it and expecting us to eat it and pay for it. Absolutely unacceptable!!!!!!! Over the past 10 years, I've eaten at Cypress Tavern about 10-15 times. I'd love to go more often to enjoy the wonderfully quaint and relaxing outdoor patio area, great live music, and friendly and attentive staff, but the food and drinks always underwhelm (and we've tried a number of the various apps and entrees). It's a shame that this restaurant isn't packed considering its accessibility (just off Rt 23), plentiful parking, sizable menu, and friendly servers. My best advice: shorten the menu (focus on making a fewer number of great dishes), offer an array of small plates and great cocktails, and keep booking the live music year-round. read more

We also did pizza takeout, where the pizza was 40$ for 2 kids sized pies. When we got home we noticed that a pizza that is specialized in having chicken on it, did not have chicken. We opted to sit upstairs where the music could still be heard but you can still enjoy conversation. We started by splitting the crab cake and oh my god the dill sauce on the side I would put on anything. For our entrees my husband ordered the clams casino pizza and I had their shrimp and scallop risotto from their specials menu. Both were amazing and such big portions! Now I'm currently super pregnant so I couldn't leave without dessert. We ordered the Oreo madness but lucky for us they happened to be out and our amazing waitress threw something amazing together. Food was just okay. I did enjoy my burger and my husband ordered the steak, it was not flavorful at all. Band was awesome a little loud if want to have conversation. No room to dance if that's what you were looking to do. Was kicked out on a Saturday night by 10:40pm. Lights turning off kind of a situation. Clearly the staff doesn't want to stay ... very off putting. We were told at 10:30 pm they would be cleaning up and shutting down. Online says they close at 12:00pm and that's definitely not the case. Live in the area and asked around and other people in town basically said the owners aren't there and the staff closes early all the time. My wife and I and another couple went to see Mechanic Street last night. We have never been to Cypress Tavern before but have lived a few towns away for 30 years. There is an inside space for dinner. If you go for dinner and music it's on the back patio. We shared a Polpette pizza as an appetizer. It was a good way to start. Two of us had the Hungarian goulash special for dinner, my wife had the short rib burger, and my friend's wife had the chicken gyro. All were very good. It was a chilly night so we appreciated the heaters outside. The band was amazing and there is a TV outside, so we got to see the Yankees win too. We wish we knew about this place earlier. The location is great with a great outdoor area. Most of the food we ordered was either over cooked or under cooked. Now In their defense, it was the last day before they closed the restaurant down for a week for vacation, so it's possible their hearts weren't in it. But still. read more

Super impressed with cypress tonight. A delicious meal and a no stress experience. We paid over the phone and had a no contact pick up. Food was really really good (we had the Greek night special) and it was so fairly priced @ 39 dollars. I am sure it would have cost me more to buy these ingredients. I have been a Kinnelon resident for over twenty years and have used this venue for many parties any gathering. I attended the 60 year anniversary party and I have to say The venue is dated, the food was flavorless and was served cold. The temperature of the room was very uncomfortable and when management was asked to correct it they did not nothing about and were flip. The wait staff who took care of the party also complained about the temperature in the room.
