The rolls and waitress were good. That's where the positive ends. For a place that is supposed to be known for their pulled pork, this is simply not "up to par." Of the 4 in my party, none of took more than a bite of our meals. The ranch for the salads simply does not taste like any ranch we've ever had, just wasn't appealing. The pulled pork came out greasy with a ton of fat in it. The sauces they provided were more like a horseradish and a pan sauce from the grease of the meat. When we asked our waitress for a different "normal" bbq sauce, the kitchen sent more of the grease sauce to the table. My daughter received chicken nuggets that were inedible, and after I even tried them, I told her she didn't have to eat them. Again, the waitress was kind and did what she could to help us out when it came time for the check as we ended up with our meal being left on the table. After hearing blazing reviews of this place, we decided to give it a try but unfortunately won't be going back. Casual, and very eclectic. Signing in for a table was chaotic! We almost got bypassed. A wide variety of menu items. At our table we selected Chili salmon, seafood kabobs and broiled ribeye. The ribeye was thick and it was cooked exactly as requested. Everyone enjoyed their dinners. Cuz's specializes in barbecue. They even have smoked ribeye! I may try that next time. Service was slow because it was such a busy Saturday evening. The server was friendly, polite and apologetic. It was not a big problem, there was a lot of conversation going on at our table. It's a cute, if not bizarre ambiance. One of the owners is a self professed artist and has done most (if not all) the ary work. It definitely was NOT my cup of tea, but I didn't go there for the decor. It took a minute to get seated, but not horrible. After I was seated I was waited on fairly quick, and the service was pretty good. It wasn't really busy since I got there early, but it *could have been a little faster, and more attentive. Now for the food: I had the "kids cut" of the fillet mignon which I believe was 10oz. With some blue cheese crumbles. My side was a sweet potato. It did not come with a salad, which for 28.00... *should have been included! For dessert, a delicious blackberry cheescake. The steak was slightly overcooked (I ordered rare, and got medium), but I was hungry and ate it anyway. It was tasty regardless of how it was cooked. Now, I know it's hard to mess up a baked sweet potato, but man....this thing was like butter! It was so creamy and tatsed perfect! The cheesecake was divine, perfectly creamy, sweet, and tart from the blackberries. DO NOT expect this to be an inexpensive adventure! This place is pricey!!! It's definitely not a place I would go to often, and only with small parties (although they can accommodate them). My take away is this : EVERYTHING is scratch made, which means you're gonna pay more for everything. That foes two things, 1)increase your tab, 2) but delight your taste buds. Had the BBQ pizza and shared the ribeye steak. Overall this place is just weird and gross. Service was fine but it was loud, and a weird mix of Mexican, Asian, and southern BBQ. I saw Elvis and Kim Jong Un on the same wall. The pizza was simply not good. It was doughy flatbread with what tasted like Walmart brand fiesta blend with barely any sauce on the pizza. The BBQ tasted off and funny. The pizza is served on two halves on different plates which was weird. This was the first time I have had pizza from a restaurant that was so bad I didn't finish it. Cuz's is a must-stop when we are visiting family in the area. Yes, it looks a little crazy from the road, but the trip inside is worth it. Portions are very large which is good with a large group of people. You can try multiple things and still have left overs. Our family favorites are the cheese egg rolls and the 17 oz filet. We also enjoy the ribeye, but get it butterflied. Desserts are typically homemade, and you can't go wrong. Everytime you go, it's the same staff. It shows they take care of their employees. My family and I eat at Cuzs regularly. Our food is always delicious. The kitchen staff is top notch. We always order the smoked Ribeye medium well. You cannot truly go to another steakhouse and order a steak like Cuzs. Let's talk about the crab cakes...oh my goodness, they melt in your mouth. High quality meat and the best crab on the market. I've eaten at a lot of seafood restaurants and I have never had crab as fresh and delicious as Cuzs. The Mac and Cheese is cheezy delicious from the brick oven. You should really plan a visit. I promise you won't regret it. Start off with a cheese egg roll and crab cheese dip with chips. The Staff will go above and beyond to make your order to your liking. Cuz's is one of the best restaurants in the Richlands area. However, the food and service could definitely use some work. I always have the prime rib when I go to Cuz's because it's so delicious I can't convince myself to try anything else. This was the first time I visited before the crowd starts (around 4pm on a Saturday), and I expected the service to be much better than it was. The restaurant wasn't too busy but it took a very long time to get our dishes. One dish was brought out, ten minutes later two more, and finally another five minutes the last dish. Even though this was a less busy time, it took so much longer to get our food and some of the food was cold. I was asked to cut into my baked potato because "they sometimes just leave them in the oven even after they are cooked. They're over cooked a lot so I wanted to make sure your potato is okay." I couldn't believe this. If this is known by waitstaff, why doesn't management or the kitchen change how they are cooking or storing potatoes? It seems a little silly to ask guests to cut into their food to make sure it's cooked properly. I will of course visit Cuz's again, but I do hope they can work more on the service and food issues that I experienced during my last visit. read more

One of the more interesting places I have ever visited. I'm sure the locals know about it, but for everyone else traveling it sits on a farm and you would never be able to tell. It looks like a barn from the outside. The inside is nicely furnished with a unique style and authentic barbecue feel. They have a good menu with plenty of options. I moved to Minnesota almost seven years ago. I used to live in Virginia and was introduced to this restaurant a number of years ago. I -still- miss this place. And when I go back to Virginia to visit family, it is always on my list of priorities. The atmosphere can only be described as whimsically tacky. Walking in, seeing all the vivid primary colors, quirky furniture and random hanging lights sort of makes you feel like you're looking at things through your inner child's eyes. It's Asian, backwoods, rustic, western, Mexican and awesome. I've never been anywhere else that compared to this place. When I used to go, they had a live band (usually bluegrass or something similar) playing upstairs above the restaurant. Since the lines at this place are usually long, it was fun to go up there to pass the time. Admittedly, I can't stand bluegrass or country music, but something about the atmosphere makes it feel appealing. The owners are very nice, very wonderful people. And they do things right here... the chefs are trained very well. The menu is always being updated and jazzed up to keep things interesting. Their steaks are gargantuan and melt-in-your-mouth excellent. I never skip ordering the burgundy mushroom gravy with one, though... it puts it over the top. Even the bread that they serve with sweet cream butter is amazing. I do recall having tried their actual BBQ here and being underwhelmed. Which is amusing since the word barbeque is in their restaurant's name... but nothing about this place fits into any mould. Just... don't pass this place up. If it weren't 1,200 miles away right now, I'd be heading straight to it instead of writing this review. I ordered the ribeye steak, cooked medium, and my girlfriend ordered the ribs. The ribeye reminded me of the steaks we get cut from a cow when butchering it, not a supermarket steak. The meat was tender, juicy, and cooked as ordered. It had a good sear and seasoning. I did not feel the need to add salt or pepper to it. I would highly recommend this steak to anyone. My girlfriend's ribs, on the other hand, is why I have to give Cuz's two stars. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and had a nice smokey flavor, but the Kansas City style BBQ sauce was atrocious, and the ribs were soaked in it. It tasted like smokey water, no sweetness, Tang, or any flavor whatsoever. The coleslaw was drenched in vinegar, rendering it inedible. I took a bite of the coleslaw and spit it out. We ordered the Hot Cheese Crab Dip for an appetizer. One of those words was missing from the dish. There was no crab. We looked, scooping through it to find the crab. It cannot be CRAB dip if there isn't any crab. It also had a weird, off-putting sweetness to it. This dip was more like Tostito's cheese dip with sugar and no spice. We also ordered an egg roll, and it was an egg roll. There is free bread and butter on the table. I love bread. I have an unhealthy relationship with bread, especially warm bread. This bread is dense and salty. I was not a fan of this bread. I ended up splitting my steak with my girlfriend rather than let her eat those disgusting ribs and slaw. If you're reading the 1-star reviews and noticing a theme of bad service, it's true. We were seated and didn't see our waitress for quite a while. We were one of three couples in the restaurant at the time, so we expected to be greeted sooner. When we were ready to leave, we sat there, waiting and waiting for her to come back to our table. By this time there was four couples. She apologized for not coming back sooner, saying that everyone was bailing at the same time. However, she stood at one customer's table during the majority of our meal. We voiced our concerns about the ribs and sauce, and she said that she doesn't like them either. We then recommended that she tell someone so they could see if maybe someone made a mistake with the sauce. She said that she wasn't going to do that. We only decided to eat at Cuz's because we were celebrating selling our house and moving back to Pennsylvania. Looking back, we would have preferred going to Pal's in Lebanon. I went there wanting BBQ, so I ordered the BBQ and the waitress told me I should really order something else, which surprised me, I have never had that happen. Plus it is advertised as a BBQ place. She brought me a sample and she was right, it was awful! The food we ordered was okay, but I just wasn't a huge fan. It was a little overpriced, $7.50 for a plate of Mac and cheese. I'd heard about the great BBQ at Cuz's, so after a trip to Burkes Garden we decided to try it. The restaurant is really eclectic - it looks as if the wait staff, after a long shift, was given buckets of paint and all the beer they could drink and told to do what they wanted in the restaurant. Swirls and hand prints, kitschy sayings and phrases - there's a lot to look at, for sure. When we told the waitress we were there for BBQ, she asked if we'd been in before. A tip? She brought us samples of both the pork and the beef BBQ, and I'm glad she did. Both were drowning in a tomato-paste sauce of some kind, and had an unrecognizable tang. We opted for kabobs, a couple of ribs, and a crab dip. All in all, "meh" is a good way to describe it. Certainly wasn't worth the $30 ticket, although I'm glad she steered us away from the BBQ. And I've been going since 1995 (before the fire & rebuilding that changed that back room into the gorgeous open space it is now). My only issue with this place for years is the difficulty reading the menu. IT ALL LOOKS LIKE THIS $7 AND IT'S ALL RUN TOGETHER $13 WITHOUT SPACES OR LINES BETWEEN THE ITEMS $22 SO IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO READ $11 ESPECIALLY FOR BEGINNERS $15. But I think it's all intentional now. They don't care and they don't have to change it. Share appetizers: Cheezed egg roll and crab dip with the famous bread rather than those chips they serve. My parents are all about the seafood kabobs. My palate is very rich, so sometimes I get the creamed mushrooms in saffron sauce. Don't do this unless you A) have a similarly rich palate B) love morel mushrooms and C) know what color saffron is. The BBQ was what I first handled as a kid (and trust me, it's not your St Louis OR NC BBQ...it's just....well...Cuz's). Now I go for the steak unless there's a specialty item I must have such as a Duck entree with Skanky Mac & Cheese. I'm ALL about the Green Peppercorn Filet medium. If you don't like gravy get the red wine burgundy sauce. The side potatoes are sometimes small and the salad dressing is still something I avoid. I don't go there for sides. It's just apps, bread, and meat. Order a piece of French Silk Pie to go (cause you won't be able to consume much after you finish those apps and try to attack that filet). It's expensive, but if you want to treat out-of-town company or clients who love to eat, you really can't go wrong. Take this review with a grain of salt, though you may want to save it for the food. Cuz's came highly recommended by the locals. And usually, I enjoy trying places representative of the areas I'm traveling through, even if it's nothing like what I'd usually try. My baked potato looked dried out and old. It tasted worse. The bbq pork just didn't do it for me. The mix of sauce and the meat fought with each other. The slaw arrived drenched in vinegar and the bread was both stale and dry. Finally, and I'm convinced this is unfair, the sweet tea was horrid. That, in particular, must be a Virginia thing. Far enough south to put sugar in the tea, but northern enough to mess up the brewing. It tasted off, almost like instant but not quite. This at least is consistent with the area. If it weren't for the potatoe and bread, I'd assume my distaste was completely because of local taste. But I did not enjoy a single bite of the food. Add to that, that it took several minutes for me to be seated with several tables open, and you have the 2 stars. I'm adding one because of ambiance, and the benefit of the doubt. read more

Mary and her family introduced me to Cuz's several years ago and in those early years learned that if you lived in Tazewell County and have never been to Cuz's then you don't know what good food is!t Let's begin with one of the best things i have ever eaten in my life. Yes, I know that is a bold statement. I stand by it. The dish was called Shrimp Veracruz. An amalgamation of tomatoes and seafood, including shrimp (of course), white fish, scallops and crab along with deliciously thin squash. The flavors married so well together. I remember the first bite I took after i pulled it out of the microwave. Yes, microwave. I was enjoying this delicious stew of seafood and veggies hours after it had been ordered and cooled in the refrigerator. Unfortunately, I had to work for this trip to Cuz's but Mary and the Fam did great! But this dish was a special, only coming around once every blue moon. Here is the tradition that is standard with whoever is lucky enough partake in a Cuz's meal with Mary's family. Everyone gets an appetizer. A standard appetizer for us is the Skanky Lobster Mac'n Cheese. What a brilliant dish. Chunks of lobster mixed with a creamy cheddar cheese sauce and macaroni noodles and to top it all off... blue cheese to give it that tang that leaves you salivating for more. Mary's mother always gets the mushroom gravy crouton, Savory deliciousness! Of course everyone shares the appetizers. For the entrees everyone gets a bite of what is ordered and nobody can order the same thing. The entrees are always different and eclectic. Their cuts of meat are ridiculous as well. The Hunka is a piece of Prime rib the size of a baby's head! No one person is able to finis it themselves. I have never had a bad meal at Cuz's. The only thing that may deter some people are the prices of the dishes. Its not uncommon for a dish to be in the $20 range but it is absolutely worth it to splurge every once in a while to enjoy this wonderful establishment. read more

Cuz's, for some reason unbeknownst to me, has been a famous landmark destination for a few decades now. After years of hearing about it, I finally broke down and went there tonight. I'm guessing the novelty of the place - it's barn location and psychedelic livestock theme - is the reason it is mentioned so often around the area because I don't think anything about the food would keep people talking. I ordered the ribs, which were saturated in a vinegar based sauce that was simply too strong. Now, before you quip about sauce preferences, please keep in mind that I am a BBQ lover and I know a good vinegar based sauce when I encounter one...this was not one of those sauces. It was like someone took a can of tomato juice, added a little vinegar and poured it over the ribs. No nuances of sweetness or spice, just tomato juice and vinegar. The slaw that accompanied the ribs was just as offensive, waaay too heavy with the vinegar. As if my plate wasn't bad enough, the crab cakes my mother opted to try were absolutely horrendous. They were chock full of crab meat and had very little filler, which you would normally want in a crab cake. However, the meat was of questionable integrity. After one bite, she pushed the cakes away, so I tried them myself. It's very possible that the meat was spoiled. Neither of us kept the bite in our mouths long enough to know for certain, but they definitely weren't fit to eat either way. The only positive was the complimentary bread they served. It was a nice fresh sourdough that was served piping hot with lots of butter on the side. If it weren't for the bread and the baked potatoes that came with our entrees, we would have refused to pay for anything. The server was nice and removed my mother's crab cakes from our check (I didn't say anything about my ribs because I felt too embarrassed that we already had complained about the crab cakes, and I didn't want them to think that we were just trying to scam a free meal.)
