Stopped at Southern Craft Barbecue while passing through VA and it's a hidden wonder not too far off the interstate. Wasn't expecting much, but the food was fantastic. BBQ tends to blend together after a while, but theirs stood out, good flavor without being overpowering, something for everybody. I got the smoked turkey sandwich and the turkey was so tender and juicy I almost ordered a second one, even though the first was plenty filling. Bristol, Va. We checked into the adjoining Sessions Hotel and decided to have dinner here, why not? It is close and everyone working there was extraordinary friendly. Our waiter was really cool with his Southern Hospitality and acquired accent (Not From the South, but Accents Can be Contagious). We ordered our food and it came out quickly. Right away I saw that the ribs were charred. I ordered a whole rack as I am able to eat that many when the ribs are moist and tender. Unfortunately, the char was not limited to the glaze like some styles I've had. These baby backs were burnt well into the meat and the carbon was difficult to avoid. This also contributed to a very dry meat. It's a shame because the meat around the bones was quite tender and fall off the bone consistency. I find it hard to believe the pit master was even in the kitchen. Ribs are typically a signature dish in BBQ, and any one with pride in their profession would not allow these ribs to be served. How many times have these ribs be reheated under a flame or heat lamp anyway? Burnt Ends (The Actual Name of the Dish): These are actually pretty good, the flavor kind of hints at a wine sauce. They are way too dry to get through the entire serving though. Fried Green Tomatoes: not bad, just basic. Red Skin Potato Salad: Good, not anything special. Sweet Potato Soufflé: Very tasty, I did eat all of this. Pork Belly Collard Greens: The first few bites were interesting, but absolutely no empirical evidence by taste of pork belly. I soon tired of the vinegar and abandoned the dish. Tomato & Cucumber Salad: OK at first but too much vinegar. I boxed up my ribs thinking they may be salvageable for dinner the next day. Nope. The microwave just dried them out further and also destroyed what was left of the "Burnt Ends". What finally made me certain I would never spend another dollar here was our waiter returned to our table to spread the Gospel. I respect another's right to believe in what ever religion or belief system they want. However, this is a place of business and you work here. It is not the time or place to be proselytizing to a captive audience of customers. I had thought Southern Craft would be our go to place for breakfast, lunch or dinner during our week in Bristol, but I never set foot inside again. read more

We visit Bristol every September for the annual Bristol Rhythm and Roots and this is our go-to dinner spot. It's a bit more upscale and the bbq is delicious, there's a good variety of meat selections and sides, portion sizes are good and the prices are reasonable. Prices are competitive with festival food concession prices but coming here you get served and get to sit comfortably in air conditioning! The cocktails and wine are reasonable too. Glasses of house wines are $7. Most of the cocktails are $10. Pints of beer are $5. We've tried many of the meats and sides over our visits and found some of our favorites to be the peppered bacon, dry rub wings, brisket, pulled pork and the house salad. The peppered bacon comes with pickled jalapeños that work really well. The wings are meaty, smoky and crispy. The pulled pork includes crispy ends. So delicious. A house salad doesn't sound like much but the portion is generous. They provide a selection of bbq sauces and I like to blend the Stoney Creek Original with the slightly spicy Memphis sauces together. We've also had combo platters including brisket and burnt ends and those were spot-on too. Sides of beans, seasoned fries, sweet potato soufflé and Mac and cheese are good too. Of the dining spots in downtown Bristol, this is our spot. What an amazing first visit while staying nearby at the Sessions Hotel! We're so glad we took the recommendation because this place was incredible. We kicked things off with chips and queso, then ordered the Smoked Turkey salad and the brisket sandwich with tots and wow! Every bite was phenomenal. The brisket sandwich with the jam was an unreal combo, and the salad was packed with flavor (and plenty of meat). The restaurant itself is adorable, with tons of indoor seating, a bar, super cute outdoor space, and great TVs. The staff was incredibly sweet and accommodating, which made the experience even better. Bonus: you can make reservations ahead of time on Resy. This restaurant was attached to my hotel. The drinks are on point. They have a dog friendly patio so we went here for dinner. The June Carter is a vibrant delightful drink. Super friendly staff. Fast fresh service. I ordered the catfish, grits, and slaw. I feel like they need a stronger sauce option for tarter or hot sauce the bbq sauce options didn't do it for me. Every staff never is more than willing to help and they are very attentive and friendly. We didn't wish long for our food. Our drinks were also filled. We started with a Socra-Mary (their twist on a Bloody Mary), and a Perfectionist. Both were tasty. Try the Soca-Mary. Even the non tomato juice drinker liked this drink. We also ordered a beet that they brew themselves that was tasty. Now, food! We ordered the burnt end nachos (YES), the smoked salmon with PepperJack grits (WHAT) and Mac n cheese, and the Killer B (DREAMY). We also ordered a half pound of the pork belly. Everything was amazing. The table went silent as soon as our mouths started chewing. I don't care what you get, order the Killer B for the table to share. Cut it up into pieces and everyone get in there!!! There are many homemade sauces that they bring to the table to try with everything as well. This meat is so good that you don't even need a drop of sauce, but it is fun to taste them. Look at the meats by the pound and grab some to go. For the quality and amount of food we got, their prices are absolutely reasonable. The flavor, texture, melt in your mouth factor is worth every penny. Just a down home place that knows how to make excellent food with warm and welcoming service. They do have merch available inside for purchase. My husband and I lodged overnight in Bristol, and I looked at Yelp reviews for the best places to eat in the area. With its 4.5 star overall rating we decided to order carryout from Southern Craft. We went to pick up our order around 8:20 pm. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries and my husband ordered two pulled pork tacos. When we got back to our hotel room, I discovered that they gave me pulled pork without the sandwich, but that wasn't the worst part. For both of our meals, the meat was dry as a bone, and my fries tasted like they had been sitting for hours. After taking a couple of bites, we trashed both.. Very disappointing. We went there a year ago and had a wonderful experience. The other day we went again and it was drastically different. We ordered burnt ends and brisket in the meat combo. The burnt ends were basically hard chunks of very dry pork bbq with some blackened spots but not crispy burnt ends in bite size chunks of good meat like last year. Also the brisket was very dry as well and the Cole slaw is quite bland. The grits were the bright spot as they were delicious. The server was super nice and attentive. For the price, it was not worth it. The meat should be much more tender and moist for $26. We will try other places before returning here again. read more

I am a sauce guy but I didn't even use sauce on either because it tasted so good. For my two sides I had grits and mac n cheese. Which was amazing also. Southern Bbq at its finest Let me start off by saying I'm a BBQ snob and try BBQ from all over the country so I am harsher than most people would be. Food Appetizers: For appetizers we tried the brisket nachos and Candied Black Pepper Bacon. The Nachos were solid (7/10). The cheese was particularly good with a very unique flavor. The chips were the perfect consistency for nachos white a nice bbq flavor to them. The brisket was solid flavor/texture although I wouldn't say it is their specialty. My only complaint is I felt like they were a little chintzy on the brisket. The candied bacon was excellent (8/10) with a nice balance of the brown sugar, pepper and jalapeno. Not the best bacon I have ever had but would order it again and really enjoyed it. Main course/Sides: We ordered a couple racks of baby back ribs, fried tomatoes, fried okra, mac n cheese, sweet potato soufflé and pepper jack grits. The Mac n cheese and grits were fine but unremarkable (6/10). They aren't bad but because everything else is so much better I wouldn't order again. The sweet potato shuffle was excellent. (10/10) Wonderful flavor perfect texture. Very unique you need to try. The fried okra was hand breaded, perfectly seasoned, amazing crispy texture. Possibly the best fried okra I've ever had. (10/10) The fried green tomato was a complex explosion of flavor that took several minutes to process (10/10). The crispy salty outside, followed by the tangy green tomato followed by a sweet after taste. I don't normally like fried green tomato but saw a good review and thought I'd risk it and I'm glad I did. The Ribs were excellent (9.5/10). They said the ribs were "glazed" but there isn't much sauce. Thick crust on the outside tender on the inside with a sweet smoky flavor permeating throughout. Top 5 ribs I have had anywhere in the country. Atmosphere: We came at lunch time when it was relatively empty. Wasn't too loud. Seems had a nice vibe with exposed brick and old time light bulbs. Restaurant and restrooms were clean. Service: Waitress was friendly and helpful. They ran out of ribs right before we ordered (which is odd since the restaurant seemed almost empty when we arrived but we did come late (around 1:30pm). Ended up waiting about 30 minutes for them to get more off the smoker but we weren't in a rush so it wasn't a big deal. Value: We ordered 2 apps, 1 1/2 racks of ribs, an extra side and two drinks and the total before tax and tip was $80.50. Summary: This was our first time here but I would definitely come back next time we are in town. If you love great bbq you should try it out. read more

Beautiful restaurant with a nice big parking lot. Hostess seats you and you have a waitress which to me for BBQ is a nice detour from the normal order at counter style. I ordered smoked turkey with two sides. It's a massive menu with a mix of typical BBQ but also items like wings, nachos and a great cocktail list. My daughter and I go here for lunch sometimes when I'm in town and it's definitely one of my favorite places to go. The food is amazing and the staff has always been so helpful and nice! We had the fried pickles to share and they're homemade, and absolutely delicious! I had the Firebird chicken sandwich with the fire apple aioli, and it's so crispy and juicy, I want to order it every time. The only suggestion I would have, is they should bring back the pretzel bun instead of the Texas toast, I replaced the toast with a regular bun.
