Very affordable bbq, with a homey vibe. The food was hit out miss. The ribs and brisket were dry and lack flavor compared to other bbq places. You def have to dip it in their Sauces. Very unassuming little place right off the road. Very popular, a mixture of what looks like locals and also tourists. My husband loves BBQ, I do not eat meat so I planned on just eating some hush puppies. They offered a black bean burger! I was shocked. It was delicious and I still got some hush puppies (came with a delicious sweet/peppery honey) My hubby got the Poppy plate brisket and he said it was delish (along with the potato salad) Our server, Amanda, was FANTASTIC! She was so bubby, friendly, and extremely attentive. I would love to return for food and also to talk with her more. HIGHLY recommend giving this place a try read more

Great food, just outside of Blacksburg. Have to try the hush puppies. Warm friendly service. They quickly accommodated our large group. You know you're in a local place, and the ambiance and feel are welcoming. I'm glad we avoided the chain restaurants in Blacksburg and Christiansburg. read more

We stopped in for lunch for the first time and it was absolutely amazing! We started with the hushpuppies. We got the catfish entree which came with two sides. We chose the macaroni and cheese and baked beans. We also got the brisket cheesesteak with macaroni and cheese. All homemade and delicious. Wish I lived closer so I could come here on a regular basis! Very nice staff, even made suggestions for a similar item (that turned out even better) when she had to tell me they had run out of the grilled chicken I wanted, she suggested chicken tenders. I said I didn't want fried, and she said they could grill them (that wasn't on the menu). The chicken tenders were delicious!! The BBQ sauce was really good and the sweet potato casserole was to-die-for!! All in all, great food, and incredibly nice folks! read more

Truly and absolutely some of the best barbecue and down-home cooking that I have ever had. My buttermilk fried catfish was a generous portion, and the fish plus my slaw, hushpuppies, and green beans were all simply excellent. I LOVED it here and I'm a vegetarian! I can't stop thinking about my delicious veggie burger. It tasted home-made and was made from whole food, not highly-processed soy. The staff was super helpful when I mentioned I was a vegetarian offering me choices. Friendly people, cute place, great food. What a gem in the middle of nowhere! The servers were kind but busy as it was absolutely packed. The hush puppies were large and perfect. The babe sauces were on point and the pulled pork reminded me of classic Bills BBQ in Richmond. My only complaint is that the bun wasn't fresh. Put a fresh bun on there and this place will compete for any other bbq place. Very impressed. read more

We went for dinner and we were not disappointed. The pulled pork was moist and delicious . The beef brisket was very food and I really enjoyed it. Awesome little spot in a very small town in Virginia. This place was a great place to eat after hiking all day. Cold beer and good food. The people where super friendly and the cook even came out to ask how the food was. The Beef brisket was my favorite followed by the chicken fingers. All the different BBQ sauces where fun to try and pair with the different meats. This place definitely had a nice small town charm to it and you can smell the BBQ in the parking lot. Fantastic. This is most definitely a good one . If you are passing by this place you should definitely stop in . Charming place . Let's start with parking , plenty of it ! Nice level parking close to entrance . Several outdoor seating options , and a dining area inside (you may want to call ahead for larger parties I only saw one larger table ) which could be due to Covid/time of day . Menu- large large menu with a nice variety of combination platters and choices . The food i has was excellent. Served promptly even during a busy time . Temps were good on each item . We had a large group , and had an excellent experience overall. We are not from the area , and we're meeting family to celebrate a birthday. Very much enjoyed. read more

We had been told about this place and decided to drive over from Christiansburg. We were not sure where to park because they were busy. We parked in the bank parking lot next door. We were quickly seated in what looked the bar area at a high top table. It was very dark, looked dirty and the there were tons of flies. We order a large pick 3. It was the chicken, ribs and catfish with a side salad, green beans, and baked beans. It came out on a large tray with a pile of the beat fries underneath. The food was amazing. We really loved the chicken and catfish. It was cooked to perfection. There were 4 sauces on the table that were not labeled. We asked our server to tell us what each one was. The tap water tasted horrible. So, we opted for beers! I think it's great that there is cool restaurants in this little town. A MUST GO when you are near Blacksburg. A small place around 20 minutes away from Blacksburg. The owner and staff are very friendly and welcoming. I've been here around 3 or 4 times and the food has always been amazing. It's about $25 to get a platter and get 3 meats + 2 sides + fries. This can definitely feed 2 people. Their brisket is very tender and the fries are super crispy. I like to get the fried catfish, mac & cheese, and ribs. A half-chicken is ginormous and usually tender. Used to be an old post office. My cousin ordered the frog legs to share - I was skeptical - but oh what a delight. They were delicious. I've never had them cooked like this before. Best. Barbecue. EVER! We went a little out of the way from Blacksburg to try this place. They had a sort of a "pick four" special, and everything was SO GOOD. The brisket is to die for. The sweet potato casserole and spicy slaw are really good as well. The place is very country, and the people who work here are very nice. Very mediocre. I had chicken tenders with fries and green beans. The chicken was good, but nothing special. The green beans were okay, but again, nothing particularly impressive. My husband and I went to their food truck when it was at a brewery in Radford. The first night (yes, the first night...), I got a pulled pork sandwich--which was really good--and my husband got the brisket cheesesteak. I'm barely exaggerating when I say that that cheesesteak was life-changing for him; I wish I could convey his expression of awe and sweet relief as all stressors surprisingly relinquished their weight on his shoulders with each bite. He said it was the best sandwich he's ever had in his life. Leading us to the second night... My husband spent the whole day debating whether we were going to have to go back, and he finally caved. Having witnessed this momentous occasion in his life, I got the chicken cheesesteak and he repeated his brisket choice. I can confirm that the cheesesteaks were fantastic (and my husband only became more impressed by the repeat performance). So, I can't speak to the restaurant itself, but I'd say don't hesitate to go if the food truck is any indication of quality. read more

Can't say enough about Bluegrass BBQ - in my opinion, this is the best BBQ in the New River Valley - worth the drive over from Blacksburg/Christiansburg. Not a lot of seating because it's small but they did an outstanding job with takeout while the indoor seating was closed. BBQ is great on its own and all sauces are good as well. BBQ isn't greasy like a lot that you'll find. Only negative that I'll say is the pimento cheese dip could use a little more flavor - it's a bit bland, but the accompanying chips were great, well seasoned. Overall I can't recommend more if you're looking for BBQ. Looking forward to coming back and trying other menu items! Also - it's really convenient to walk across the street for some ice cream at Scoops. read more

I came across Bluegrass BBQ's food truck at the railroad station in Pulaski today. It was pretty much exactly what I needed while exploring the New River Trail - lots of pulled pork for a reasonable price, with some tasty slaw as well (and I'm not typically a slaw person). That said, despite being 5/5 what I needed at that time, the pulled pork was more like 4/5; it isn't the best barbecue I've ever unexpectedly discovered by a bike trail (an honor currently held by Oak Hill Barbecue in Sunbury, Ohio). The pork was a little bit dry (perhaps due to ordering at late-lunch time), requiring sauce. The taste was good but not knock-my-socks-off good. By Ohio standards, it would be a contender for best in the city, but not best in the countryside. Still, I'd recommend it as a good option if you're hankering for barbecue and spot their food truck, or are up in Pembroke. Service was also friendly and amazingly quick. Word at the station was the Chicken Philly was the star player on the food truck menu today. read more

I was with a group, and one of the people in the group was a pimento cheese aficionado, and she said it was amazing, so there you go. The pimento cheese is served warm with kettle-cooked potato chips. Because I was in a group, we ordered a bunch of things for the table. The pimento cheese, but also the TOTSchos (tater tots covered in beer cheese, pulled pork and cole slaw), and some smoked wings. All of these things were delicious, but my favorite was the TOTSchos because I'm a tot lover, and I love when the tots get kind of soft from the melty cheese and still kind of crunchy from the spots that don't have the melty cheese. BOTS (what people who live here call Bottom of the Stairs) is known for their smoked meats and barbecue. Some of the people at my table got pulled pork and things, but I was feeling like something slightly lighter, so I got the blackened catfish. It comes with slaw and two additional sides, and I picked mac & cheese and collard greens. Well, my meal wasn't light in the slightest, but it was delicious! The fish was tender and had that smoky flavor from the blackened seasoning. I got the Bots Mule to drink, because if I'm not drinking wine, I like to drink gin. Someone at my table got the Pickle-tini, and they did not enjoy it as much as I enjoyed my mule. Gin goes down a treat, I tell you what. Plus! They put your Bots Mule in a plastic BOTS cup that you get to take home. Free souvenir! Bottom of the Stairs exists because there is a Top of the Stairs. At the top of the stairs is an adults-only bar. BOTS is the family-friendly counterpart.

It was incredibly large. My first thought when seeing the food was "there's no way I'm going to finish this". The catfish fillet stretched across the entire plate to cover basically the entire thing. I didn't expect the brisket pieces to be so large either. Also, the amount of tater tots on the plate was significant as well. That's not even to consider the mac & cheese and slaw coming in separate, decently sized cups. Starting with the brisket, I thought this was quite good. What jumped out to me at the start was how well this seemed to be cooked, with beautiful char marks throughout and excellently charred edges. The pieces I had that really nice smoky flavor, and the fat in the meat (since brisket is rather lean - there wasn't too much of it) tasted really good as well. I do think it was a bit dry, as cutting it with a knife required a little bit more effort than cutting a perfectly juicy brisket was, and i did notice some of the meat to be somewhat tough, but I do think both pieces were pretty solid Moving to the fried catfish, I loved how well the breading was seasoned. It had some pepper and other spices that gave it that extra flavor. I liked this less than the brisket, however, due to a) how paper-thin the breading was and b) how easily the breading broke apart from the catfish itself. The entire fillet seemed like it was on the verge of collapse. After my first cut with a fork and knife, a lot of the breading came off, and a good amount of the inner fish spilled out onto the plate. I did think the fish meat was certainly not dry and tasted pretty good, though The tater tots were also fantastic, and there was a lot of them. the fried batter on these was thick and they were quite crunchy as a result. I also appreciated the relish-like sauce that came with them. Another thing that was really good was the slaw - I found the dressing especially to be really flavorful and the vegetables were done well. I liked the mac and cheese less, though, so when it came to prioritizing, I only ended up eating a few bites of it As I already mentioned, the portion size here was pretty insane, and for a price of only around 15 dollars for everything, I thought this ratio was astoundingly good. I would recommend ordering just one for two people, as even as someone who can eat a lot, I had to leave a lot of the mac & cheese and tater tots as I prioritized finishing the main dishes. They certainly don't skimp on size - whether it's the main meat or a side

The brisket and pulled pork was perfectly done! The potato salad and banana pudding were great. My son had the half-rack of ribs and the portion they brought out looked like a whole rack. We've never seen our son eat ribs so quickly - he devoured them in what was likely a record time, and if you knew this kid - he doesn't get in a hurry for anything...but had we reached over his plate we would likely be missing fingers... lol The brisket was tender, juicy, and very flavorful. My wife enjoyed the chicken and brisket. The collard greens were perfectly done. The sauces were great! Banana pudding was the best you can get aside from having homemade. We live about 40 minutes from this restaurant and in another county - but we will now be regular fixtures at this restaurant. They are definitely the G.O.A.T. in a 4 county area! Do give them a try!

Forget fast food--if you want barbecue that's tender, flavorful, and melts in your mouth, make the stop. The owners came out and chatted with us, and you can tell it's a family-run place that takes pride in what they do. Very clean. Beautiful views. The food was amazing, the prices were reasonable, and the hospitality was just as good as the barbecue. We'll definitely be making this a regular stop whenever we're headed through the area. Highly recommend!

I've lost track of how many years we've stopped but we've had Ginger wait on us more than once. You've got to start with the fried pickles but after those are devoured just go your own way. Sauces are fantastic but the hot is HOT (I buy bottles for home every year because I love superb hot sauce with a kick!). Not even sure where to start on the food so let's just say it's all delicious ... service is wonderful... the outdoor patio comforting ... And, if you are like me you hate getting back on the road but we will be back next year!! Oh, don't forget to buy a bottle or two of their peach ketchup you'll use it up by next year!! Oh ... FYI there's a "KID MENU" for kids 12 and under AND 65 & over that includes a lil pig bbq sandwich and more!! Great idea for older kids with limited budgets who are not that hungry.
