Bluegrass in Pembroke is by far the best bbq in over a 100 mile radius. I consider myself a Smoked meats & BBQ snob. Pretty much everywhere we have tried in the SWV area is mediocre at best. Finding good properly slow smoked brisket, ribs and pulled pork is getting harder and harder to find, or at a decent price. Well, you can stop looking if you're near the area and stop into Bluegrass! First, the brisket is fantastic. Not overly fatty, well smoked, grainy and very tasty. I had it with a dollop of the Bourbon Sauce and Traditional BBQ sauce. Absolutely near perfect. Next up are the Ribs. These dry rubbed smoked baby back cut style are meat falling off the bone delicious. Again, I drizzled just a small bit of Bourbon & Traditional Sauce on them which enhanced a nice sweetness. Next up we tried the Pulled Pork with a bit of vinegar and molasses which was succulent with a great taste through and through. For sides we had the beans, Mac n cheese, sweet potato casserole & hush puppies with butter. As I said, by far the best we have had in over a 100 mile radius. This is authentic slow smoked meats, dry rubbed, not drenched in sugary sauce. You control any flavor of sauce you want at the table with several great selections. The Bourbon and Traditional were my favorites. Because of the rarity finding honest and authentic smoked bbq like this, I wish I could give more than 5 stars, as it's the closest to Texas Slow Cooked you will find in the Southern Virginia / West Virginia area. Lucky for us it's not far, as we will be coming back to enjoy this wonderful family geared place, with amazing service tucked away in sleepy ol' Pembroke VA. Went for lunch before hiking the Cascades to fuel up. We got the combination with pork, smoked sausage, Mac and cheese, hush puppies, and beans. There was a great selection of sauces, with the vinegar based one being my favorite. Both the meats were tasty, but the pulled pork was a bit dry for my taste. The Mac and cheese and the hush puppies were also perfect, and it was my first time trying baked beans, but I don't think they were my thing. The pulled pork and the Mac and cheese came to us cold, so it seemed like they were sitting a bit before they brought it to us. Our food came out pretty quickly and the server took time to tell us about the history of the restaurant and recommend dishes to us. There was plenty of seating with an outside porch, and it very much felt like a family restaurant. Very unassuming little place right off the road. Very popular, a mixture of what looks like locals and also tourists. My husband loves BBQ, I do not eat meat so I planned on just eating some hush puppies. They offered a black bean burger! I was shocked. It was delicious and I still got some hush puppies (came with a delicious sweet/peppery honey) My hubby got the Poppy plate brisket and he said it was delish (along with the potato salad) Our server, Amanda, was FANTASTIC! Awesome little spot in a very small town in Virginia. This place was a great place to eat after hiking all day. Cold beer and good food. The people where super friendly and the cook even came out to ask how the food was. The Beef brisket was my favorite followed by the chicken fingers. Nice level parking close to entrance . Several outdoor seating options , and a dining area inside (you may want to call ahead for larger parties I only saw one larger table ) which could be due to Covid/time of day . I've been here around 3 or 4 times and the food has always been amazing. It's about $25 to get a platter and get 3 meats + 2 sides + fries. This can definitely feed 2 people. Their brisket is very tender and the fries are super crispy. I like to get the fried catfish, mac & cheese, and ribs. A half-chicken is ginormous and usually tender. It was the chicken, ribs and catfish with a side salad, green beans, and baked beans. It came out on a large tray with a pile of the beat fries underneath. The food was amazing. We really loved the chicken and catfish. It was cooked to perfection. There were 4 sauces on the table that were not labeled. We asked our server to tell us what each one was. The tap water tasted horrible. So, we opted for beers! I think it's great that there is cool restaurants in this little town. My husband and I went to their food truck when it was at a brewery in Radford. The first night (yes, the first night...), I got a pulled pork sandwich--which was really good--and my husband got the brisket cheesesteak. I'm barely exaggerating when I say that that cheesesteak was life-changing for him; I wish I could convey his expression of awe and sweet relief as all stressors surprisingly relinquished their weight on his shoulders with each bite. He said it was the best sandwich he's ever had in his life. Leading us to the second night... My husband spent the whole day debating whether we were going to have to go back, and he finally caved. Having witnessed this momentous occasion in his life, I got the chicken cheesesteak and he repeated his brisket choice. I can confirm that the cheesesteaks were fantastic (and my husband only became more impressed by the repeat performance). So, I can't speak to the restaurant itself, but I'd say don't hesitate to go if the food truck is any indication of quality. read more

Can't say enough about Bluegrass BBQ - in my opinion, this is the best BBQ in the New River Valley - worth the drive over from Blacksburg/Christiansburg. Not a lot of seating because it's small but they did an outstanding job with takeout while the indoor seating was closed. BBQ is great on its own and all sauces are good as well. BBQ isn't greasy like a lot that you'll find. Only negative that I'll say is the pimento cheese dip could use a little more flavor - it's a bit bland, but the accompanying chips were great, well seasoned. Overall I can't recommend more if you're looking for BBQ. Looking forward to coming back and trying other menu items!
