Cutting group is a nice average place I went here in desperate need of a hair cut, and I think his name was John he was the owner took me in anyway which is a trait of a business I always respect John was very friendly and very welcoming simple nice conversations and hilarious My problems arose from two things, first I did enjoy my time I was just there for so long my cut took around an hour and a half, which honestly was horrible I just can't find much to talk about my first hour knowing someone, and second I feel I payed a lot for my cut he did good but no Straight razor and I asked for the back to be done a certain way and I showed him the picture about 5 times for it still too look off and it was about $55 that was with tip I would come here on a day off or in need of a basic haircut read more

Hannah did a great job cutting my hair. She was friendly and conversational. I called ahead around 5:15 and she put me on the list for 6:45. She was the only person working that evening and had "appointments" for the rest of the night. I was there maybe 50 minutes for a consultation, wash, cut, dry and style. Haircuts are walk-in only, or you call ahead like I did. For the price of $25 it's a great deal and they use Bumble & Bumble products which which smell great (although I'm an Aveda fan deep down). If you come back within 30 days you get a discount which I think is $17. Highly recommend for a quick haircut. read more

The staff at The Cutting Group has been great . I pop in whenever I have time and get a great cut every time. And they have a deal where you can come back for a discounted cut if you return in under a month. That makes it more affordable to keep my hair trimmed. Many places do not wash your hair but they do here. It's a pleasant addition to the plain barber service I use to get elsewhere. I have my favorite, but I go with whoever is next. AMAZING AND CHEAP! I went into the cutting group today for the first time and wow. I have gone all over Milwaukee looking for a good hair stylist and I finally found a place. My hair is long, thick and I have a lot of it. I can't believe how good it looks. I have gone to ViCi, Caproli and Super cuts. No one could do what this place did. And I only paid 22 dollars. Great Haircuts, BAD business. At the Cutting Group I've learned: It's okay to leave a customer waiting 3 hours without even acknowledging their presence. It's okay if you change your policies by the week. (You can't call ahead, you can call ahead, you can't call ahead if there's currently no wait - so you walk in the door and find 3 people walked in while you were on your way, you have a 2-hour wait, because they refused to write your name down.) It's okay to pretend your policies don't exist: What, we didn't give you the discount for returning within 30 days? Oh, here's a card for next time. If you come back within 30 days. And if you can wait a few hours. It's okay to use products on the customer that you claim to sell, but are perpetually out of. The worst experience - I sat there once while two stylists served 6 other customers - over 3 hours. They had to take their breaks, right? There was a third stylist, but she left without touching one, her shift was over. The haircut was ... ok. Not great. No wonder these girls can't look customers in the eye! I'm tipping 50%, and they can't write my name down because of their policy? If you want a good (not great) haircut, don't mind waiting a few hours on bad chairs with no beverages, go there. I'm not sure what K.W. is talking about. I have been to the Cutting Group twice and I have never been disappointed. My roommates go there much more often and have never had a problem. The shop has always been clean when I was there. Perhaps a stylist had just finished cutting someone's hair when you arrived? I mean, it IS a hair salon, so seeing hair clippings shouldn't startle anyone. The stylist talked everything through with me. She asked about my preferences and how I part my hair. She gave me suggestions for styling and for maintaining it's health. My hair is very long and thick and she took her time to comb through it and make sure the layers were perfect. Then, instead of just leaving it frizzy after blow drying it (that's just how my hair is), she took the time to flat iron it! She went above and beyond what I usually get! She was not rushed and took her time with my hair, even with people waiting for their cuts. The BEST part about this place? All cuts are $25! And that includes a shampoo, cut and style! How can you complain? And they use Bumble bee products (which are amazing!) True, this isn't an upscale private salon, but the girls who work here are qualified and do a great job. It's just as good for more than half the price! Come check them out. I bet you won't be disappointed. (Maybe the only drawback is the fact they don't take reservations. I love the fact you can walk-n, that it is low-pressure, and that it is cheap. I am part of the "club," so I get my cuts for just $22. I agree with a post I saw down below, the female stylists aren't ALL great. I have had two terrible cuts from them. Josh and Jason were my favourite, but Josh stopped cutting hair and Jason cut his hours down to none at the Farwell location. One cut was so bad that when I went for a follow up, she asked if I had cut my own hair. I finally found a new person, female!, who can cut hair wonderfully! read more

The price is reasonable at $25 ($22 if you're on their email list), but what I absolutely love about this place is Jason. He not only knows men's hair, but he gives great styling advice. I believe he works Tuesday from 3PM to close. I always make sure to go on Tuesday after 3PM every 6-8 weeks. I've had female stylists cut my hair once too many times. Every single damn haircut is always off, whether is be the bangs are uneven, the neckline isn't tapered properly, or it isn't cut cleanly around my ears. I'm too nice to criticize or point out the flaws to the stylist, but I've learned my lesson after giving women stylists too many chances. Only a man can cut my hair now. Too bad Jason's leaving this place this September. I highly, HIGHLY recommend Jason if you're a guy. Ladies, unless you specialize in men's hair or if you've had short boyish haircuts before, you probably won't know how to cut men's hair correctly. The fashionable female staff of stylists have always done a professional, creative turn with my hair. A value at only $25 for a cut and wash. This trumps shelling out double the price, simply to participate as a customer at a "see-and-be-seen" upscale salon. She was patient when I failed to articulate my idea, suggested a better blow dry technique, and transformed the said limp locked look I was trapped in. This place is a complete hit or miss. I had a total of three haircuts here. One stylist in particular, Caroline, was well-behaved and put a lot of effort, and did a very decent job with my hair. The other two times, one was acceptable, and the other one was pretty friggin' bad -- both the haircut and the attitude. On top of all that, they have a no-reservation policy which makes customers wait up to 45 minutes for a haircut, and makes no sense. read more

I have been going here for about a year now and every time has been a good experience. I went to a couple others prior to because I was looking for a new haircut but didn't know the terminology to describe what I want. Since the first time I've been there Caroline has helped me find what I wanted and liked, while being extremely patient with me. She really actively listened and really took her time with me. Great place, great cuts. I love the idea of a place like this - I'm a busy person so scheduling an appointment weeks in advance is not something I like doing. I don't have to here, but I still get people who can do a good job. The price is super reasonable at $25, and if you join their club thing it drops to 22. Even with it being walk-in only, I've never waited longer than 10 minutes before someone took care of me. I've never had the same person twice, but also never been dissatisfied. I also really like the shop itself. It isn't super fancy nor is it pretentious, but it still has a sense of class. As a UWM student who lives near campus the location is a big deal for me. I can walk here if i really want to, but I normally just take the bus. If you live nearby, definitely give this place a try. read more

After an 8 year hiatus, I decided to get my haircut at the Cutting Group through a friend's recommendation. Since then, I've gone back on several occasions and have received varying service. My first experience, the stylist was friendly and took the time to understanding how I wanted my hair cut. Conversation didn't seemed forced and I was satisfied with my haircut. My next two experiences, I had the same stylist who didn't converse with me other than asking me how I wanted my hair styled. Where conversation isn't crucial to a haircut, I thought it was odd. Especially since the other stylists are chatting up a storm. I didn't mind but I didn't exactly feel comfortable. She also didn't listen to me the first time and hacked off my hair. The second round I realized I needed to be explicit. And the most recent experience occurred after the work day and the wait was longer than anticipated, likely because there was only two stylists working. This surprised me since it was right after the workday on a Thursday. A prime day that I would expect people to get haircuts. Perhaps next time I'll need to duck out of work early in order to beat the rush. I like how The CG has their frequent haircut program that gives you a discount if you get a haircut before the next 30 day. This is great for me since I get my haircut frequent. I'll continue to go here until they raise their prices. I think I could probably get a similar haircut at another big box company around the corner. read more

The cut wasn't as short as I'd wanted, but my glasses were on the counter so I couldn't see what she was doing as she cut. I brought that to her attention, and she made the necessary adjustments. I can easily say that it was the worst haircut of my life. When I asked for bangs that could be worn side swept or strait across--I ended up with NO LIE, ONE INCH BANGS. I couldn't even pin anything back till they grew out. The stylist didn't talk to me at all. Was shy and quiet. Didn't ask questions. Didn't do anything gradually or ask for feedback. Just went right in and chopped. It looked ridiculous it has taken over a year to grow them back out. The second time I went to the Cutting Group, I went to their location on Humbolt. Like this one much better. It's next to Re-threads so you can look around next door if you have to wait a while for your cut. My stylist was GREAT. I think the key to a good cut here is to know exactly what you want, and be your own hair advocate--ask questions, voice concerns. DO NOT GO HERE!!! I wanted a quick haircut, my hair is super easy to work with so I wasn't worried about coming here. I wanted my hair cut all one length and now 5 INCHES OF MY HAIR IS GONE! I showed her a picture of what I wanted (my hair JUST past my collarbone) AND NOW I HAVE CHIN LENGTH BOBBED HAIR that does not suit me. I can't even put it into a LOW ponytail. SAVE YOURSELF AND DO NOT GO HERE! I asked for a certain style and got a buzz cut, a $30 buzz cut! I could have done the same thing myself. I even showed her a picture of what I wanted and still ended up with a buzz. I've never had a buzz cut in my life and never plan to again. Lady was nice but did not know what she was doing. I told her what people usually do to my hair and she told me that people only do that if they don't know what they are doing, but clearly she was the one who didn't know. I just moved to Milwaukee, and needed a new salon. I read the reviews on Yelp and chose the Cutting Group, and I am very happy. I went last week for the 1st time, got right in, no waiting. Jordan cut my hair. He listened to what I wanted & did a great job.. He took a lot of time giving me a precision haircut and to make sure I was happy. And the price is great! No appointments - walk-ins only, but, I found out when he is there (Tues 4-7) so I can go back to him if I want, and how can you beat $22 for a shampoo, cut and style? I was hoping the Cutting Group (a part of the Beauty salons) would provide a decent haircut with no frills. I was really disappointed with the quality of my cut and the cleanliness of the salon. There was short black hair clippings left around the sink basin, piles of hair in the corners, and used bloody bandages left out. Gross! I part my hair on the left - my stylist switched my part without asking and did not give me an even haircut. The right side of my hair was given layers, and then she must have went beyond her time limit because then the cut was over with! What happened?! I was the only person in the salon. I was looking for a simple trim, but the lack of basic knowledge/time management and excess of dirt made it into an awful experience. read more

I was visiting Milwaukee from out of town and walked in on Friday morning for a cut. Immediate wall of shunning from auburn-haired female behind desk. Blond female was leaning against counter talking with her. Both of their non-verbal communication told me I was unwelcome for intruding on their gossip session or morning employee hash session. I was informed twice that they did not do clipper cuts, but I thought I'd give them a chance. The salon was empty except for me and the employees, yet the blond female took ten minutes to sweep up hair from around her station, and then told me she had to go feed her parking meter, before we could get started. Once I was in the chair, she had difficulty understanding what exactly "just a trim" meant. I excused myself and informed her that I'd felt unwelcome from the moment I walked in. Don't waste your time in this place, regardless of the cost. Rude staff. Learn customer service next time you update your beautician's license. read more

My stylist moved to Hong Kong, so I had to find a place to cut my hair on short notice. I walked into cutting group, waited a little bit, then got a great haircut. I think the stylist was named Blair or Audrey, but she did a great job. It got my wife's approval which is what really matters. The girl who did my hair took a lot of time drying my hair and I felt like she cared about giving me a nice haircut, unlike a lot of people who cut hair in this price range. This place is not very reliable. The first haircut I got there was an okay job. The two after that completely botched my hair. And then wouldn't fix it when i complained. Most of the hair stylists did not care or listen to what I wanted to do with my hair. Also, a good chunk of time you spend waiting for your haircut the stylists are usually just giggling and ignoring the clients. Such bad and awful customer service I experienced there. No wonder the hair cuts are cheaper. I would definitely recommend going elsewhere for your haircut if you enjoy decent customer service and want a decent cut. read more

This place is great! I highly recommend that you get a haircut from Jason, he is awesome. I was nervous about getting bangs for the first time since approximately kindergarten, and he gave me the best damn haircut I've had in ages. I went back today, and plan to continue. Plus, the music in there is funny, and you never have to make an appointment, and it only costs $22 (if you join the club). Everyone in there is pleasant and nice, and it's not intimidating if you aren't a veteran salon visitor. Again, this place is great, especially Jason! These guys are fantastic! They don't do appointments, just walk-in... something to be aware of for the time-pressed. I went on Father's Day, so it was pretty quiet. I went with my girlfriend and we were both a little nervous to try a new place. You know how that is. We decided to take the plunge. It IS hair...it grows back, fortunately! Haha. Turns out, there was no need to worry. We found the place to be clean and orderly. We were greeted right away and both stylists were friendly. We both felt like our stylists listened to what we wanted and did a fantastic job. Both of us were pleasantly surprised to find such a great place, with such great prices. Vanessa was pretty much the coolest hairdresser I've ever had! I went in because I wanted to cut tons of my hair off for donation and not only did she listen to every request I had (and sometimes I was unsure but I totally would trust her judgement from now on) but she also engaged me in cool conversation the entire time. It's the best cut I've ever had, for an incredibly reasonable price. And if you become a member (it's free), you get 22 dollar cuts every time, and a free haircut on your birthday.
