Well, now I have a new default hair salon! On a tight budget and with a limited schedule, I did a frantic Yelp search this morning for affordable men's hair cuts within walking distance of my home. There was basically a consensus, looking at the review summaries that popped up: Cuts Off High! I poked around a bit, looked at the website (which was not completely inspiring) and made the call. I thought the man answering on the other end sounded a little gruff or quick, but the appointment was made quickly for a great time slot so that was that. If the man on the phone sounded like he valued time it might be because I had been talking to the owner, operator, and stylist who would be helping me. In retrospect, as a basically one-man operation, this place is smooth as silk pie. I arrived a bit early, and was back out the door with a completely new head of hair- and looking at my watch, it was only eight minutes past my scheduled appointment. What! Also, the haircut only cost me $10. WHAT! I am so happy with the haircut, especially vis-a-vis the price, that I can not even begin to think of going anywhere else for my next hair cut. The man who served me, Ray, was beyond personable and made the whole usually-anxious experience (for me) sail by- one of the reasons I was shocked at the time-frame was because I felt like we had had quite the meandering, casual conversation. I went in with only vague notions of what I wanted, and Ray delivered- and was even pleased to be told "do what you'd like, within these simple parameters." He talked me through his decisions as he made them, and worked efficiently. He was funny, talkative, and just plain damn good with the scissors. AND he had Stargate: SG-1 playing on the TV in the salon. While I'm not personally especially familiar to the show, it was a lot better than most background noise at salons- and it was turned up just loud enough to hear comfortably from the chair without drowning out conversation. The place doesn't try to look fancy and it's better for it; some salons look much more pretty but then charge a king's ransom in comparison, with longer waits, less attentive service, and dreadfully slow service. Ray told me he wants the place to feel comfortable, down-home, almost like the rural hair-cuttin' shop in a small town out in the country. The only way it might feel more authentic is if it was run out of a house on a woodsy lane! So yes, I was quite enamored with my trip to Cuts Off High and my appointment with Ray. He said he gets a lot of referrals through Yelp and it's easy to see why; service this awesome needs to be talked about, often, to people of discerning tastes. Update: I think this may have been one of the best looking haircuts i've ever had. Jake was the guy who cut my hair, he had Sin City action figures in his booth. Go with him and you won't regret it. ______ Parking situation is pretty bad. Good luck dealing with street parking or risking the blue dube's lot. The place is really nice, and you can tell the owner didn't cut corners when he did the interior decoration. I'd almost say its too nice for campus. I've gotten my hair cut here a few times, colored with highlights once, and always leave satisfied. Most recently I took a risk and had Ray chop all of my hair off into a pixie cut (for the first time ever), was happy with the result, and got lots of compliments. He's very efficient but also careful and thorough about getting the job done right. The place is huge for some reason, though he only works with one customer at a time, as far as I can tell. Always some fun fantasy or sci-fi show playing on the tv, and some recent-ish upgrades include a pretty lit wall and fridge with complimentary beverages. The place is pretty busy so he only accepts walk-ins if there aren't appointments already booked. It's not too difficult to get a same-day appointment, though, and he now uses a Google calendar linked to the website so you can check when there are openings. Great place to go for a haircut if you don't care about a trendy, posh, more expensive hair salon. It seems like more men come here than women, but I think he's good with all sorts of haircuts. I made an appointment at cuts off high after seeing all the rad reviews for this place!! OMGOSH best decision i have made since i have moved to Columbus!! The location kind of sucks for people who hate driving in the city and street parking but its totally worth it!! kind of looks like a barber shop from the outseide but trust me once you go inside you will think completely different! I called at about 530 hoping to get an appointment that day when i got off work at 6. I talked to Tony on the phone and he gladly took my request for an appointment at 630 even tho they closed at 8 and he would have to stay after for a few minutes after they closed to finish (he is a sweetheart btw!) Anyways i got there a few minutes late because i got a bit lost and hit some traffic by OSU(no surprise there)!! Was greeted when i waled in by two lovely men siting on the couch watching netflix :3 After sitting at tony's station both him and ray helped me pick out a hair color since i had absolutely no idea what i wanted. After picking out a color he got started!! They were both hilarious might i add, i haven't laughed so much at a hair salon in a long time. i am usually the kind of girl who gets anxiety when cutting changing my hair, but there was no worry at all with him! Finished at about 830 which was very fast for what i had done. when i went to pay i was shocked at how inexpensive it was!! (98 for a full color, 5 foils and a cut!!) I'm a busy med student. I rarely have the time to dress up. But there was one Sunday when I wanted to look nice and my usual favorites (Akada and New Wave) were closed. The owner, Ray, of Cuts Off High kindly agreed to squeeze me in without an appointment. At first I thought I was getting a deal. I had read rave reviews and liked his website. A last minute professional hair cut for $20! ($16 haircut + $4 tip). That's waaaaaay cheaper than both Akada and New Wave. The hair cut was ok--we were in a rush, I wasn't expecting to be swept off my feet. The problem came when he flat ironed my hair. I don't own a flat iron or blow dryer, but whenever I get my hair cut, the stylist usually applies some kind of heat protectant on my hair before styling it-- Ray didn't. I nervously asked him what heat protectant he used, hoping that he would realize that he had forgotten to apply it. He answered none, but sounded annoyed. I shouldn't have felt bad, but I quieted down. Besides, I figured my mom never used heat protectant on my hair when I was a kid and nothing bad ever happened. He didn't take time to dry my hair. He started flat ironing wet hair (which is a lot more fragile than dry hair) Steam started gushing out of my hair. I felt uncomfortable watching my hair boil. He told me that it was normal. He finishes, I hand a $20 and rush off. The next morning, after I wash my hair, I found burnt chunks that looked like wool. I try deep conditioning but it still looks like heat warped wool. A couple of weeks later, I decide to go back and see Ray. Ray doesn't apologize and directs me to a $12 spray. I've used the spray for a couple of weeks and now the wool had been tamed to frizz and a small clump of steel wool. I can't even cut or hide it since the hair is in the front. My usual stylist told me that it would probably take 9 months for it to grow out. =( I am angry because, damaging my hair required a not one, but a series of mistakes: forgetting to use heat protection, flat ironing wet hair, using a high temperature on fine hair, ignoring my concerns. To add insult to the injury, he didn't apologize or show any sign of regret when I asked him how to fix my hair. I wish I had my old hair back. I feel compelled to write this review since this guy also does permanent hair straightening. After seeing the damage he can wield with a flat iron, I'd be nervous letting him apply chemicals to my hair. read more

So I'm not a Yelp reviewer. Let's just get that out of the way. However, I felt so compelled to write because of the amazing service I received. First off, the guy is super nice. Very friendly and good to talk to. If you're a total guy like me and have no idea what to do with your hair, he's got you. He knows exactly what would work with your head. I haven't gotten a hair cut that looked this good in I don't know how long. He also has great refreshments in the waiting area (nothing really out of the ordinary, water, fruit, coffee with a lot of different creamers). Also, he has an indoor bike storage room (which I wish I had known about before I went in as it started raining while he was doing my cut). It is definitely a unique vibe here, but always interesting. And one of the best parts, the prices are incredible. On top of it all, the actual location is beautifully decorated and there's always something interesting on the TV. After hearing my boyfriend rave about Ray, and seeing his very reasonably-price women's hair cut ($22 - half of what I'd normally pay), I decided to give Cuts Off High a try. I have long, thin blonde hair and asked Ray to trim off the scraggly ends and give me some shape without losing much length. He definitely delivered! He listened to me attentively, and did exactly what I asked quickly and efficiently while keeping me smiling with a delightful conversation. Very happy with the cut! Another point- while I waited for Ray to finish with the previous client, I enjoyed a complimentary fresh muffin and coffee and played on the Xbox set up. Overall very nice experience. This might be the most care anyone has ever put into a haircut, and it shows! Ray is definitely a perfectionist, which is exactly what you want when someone's cutting your hair. He knew exactly what would work on my head and was careful to get it exactly perfect. He also gave me a little impromptu styling lesson. Honestly, this is a step up even from the best barbers I've been to before - he gave me not just what I asked for, but actually a step better. Other than that, the atmosphere was fine, and having bike storage inside was great. The only slightly strange thing was the TV on and friends and coworkers in and out throughout the time I was there, and the small talk was occasionally odd. It also took a little longer than I'm used to (an hour for my short hair), but was totally worth it for the quality I got. I went here for the first time and it was a great experience. To schedule an appointment, I called, left a voicemail, Ray texted me back with an available time, that same day and that was that. Ray is very friendly and listens to what you have to say. He is interesting to talk with and has a lot of opinions he will happily share with you. He takes great pride in his work and in educating his customers. I liked that he showed me how to care for and style my hair. My favorite part was that he didn't try and sell me a bunch of hair products or things I didn't want. Don't expect any frills in this salon. With the $22 women's haircut, there wasn't a shampoo, he just misted my hair with water, and then blow dried it. The salon isn't anything fancy, there's no receptionist to get you coffee, etc. The service was good, the price was right and I like my hair, so I would go back here or recommend him to a friend. read more

Cuts off High.. After spending years giving Ray the benefit of the doubt I decided to give another place a shot. I quickly remembered that it is possible to receive a haircut with professional service. Ray gives quality haircuts. Don't expect him to be on time. Don't expect him to be sober. Don't expect him to uphold his "policy" where him being late for your cut results in a free service (I wouldn't have accepted this anyhow... But don't make a big announcement about it if you're going to be 20 minutes late and then not even offer!) Overall I decided it was worth paying a few extra dollars to go somewhere else where I can expect my appointment to be REASONABLY close to the scheduled time instead of consistently late. Ray is a good guy and I hope he can add a bit of professionalism to his craft. As it stands though, there are too many other viable options to justify returning. read more

I was at first very nervous that the haircut was only $10. But Ray did a fantastic job and was actually the most informative barber I've ever been to! He taught me a lot about the thickness of my hair and it's color. These are little things, but it felt good knowing my barber knew so much about his trade. Ray is amazing and truly cares about you and your hair cut. He fixed a poor / sloppy hair cut made by Campus Cuts free of charge even when I insisted on paying. It was my first time getting by hair cut by Ray and I will definitely return to him in the future. I made an appointment with him, arrived early but to the wrong place. For some reason as I was walking down High Street I saw Campus Cuts and walked in there where they had me in and out in about 10 mins and didn't do a great job. I was a little confused when I walked in but they got me in and out so fast that it finally hit me when I paid that I had gone to the wrong place. I felt bad because I had made an appointment with Ray and didn't want to blow him off so I walked down to Cuts off High to explain the situation. I considered having him neaten it up a little but decided I didn't want to pay for 2 hair cuts. So I apologized for my mistake and was going to leave but he stopped me and insisted that I stay so he could fix up my hair (and he found a lot more wrong with it than I saw at the time but I would have noticed it later if he didn't fix it). He spent a good 40 mins making my hair look neater and much more presentable. By the end, it was exactly the cut I was looking for (which was impressive because I had been debating what I was going to do all day). I was happy with the way the hair looked when I left Ray. I normally have my hair cut by my Aunt in North Canton Ohio at a Solon where regular hair cuts cost around $40, and only get more expensive if you add on extra things (coloring, shampoo, extension... Etc). Ray's haircut, friendliness, and experience was just as good as my Aunt's hair cut at home. I generally just buzz it myself with clippers because it seems like every time I go to a salon or barber I come out feeling more bummed than feeling good about my hair. That said, definitely a totally different experience at Cuts Off High. I'm somewhat new to the Columbus area and decided to get my hair cut here because of the reviews it got here on Yelp. I wasn't disappointed in the least. Called Friday afternoon for an appointment and he was able to get me in pretty much right away. Ray is excellent at what he does. I was very impressed. Makes you feel comfortable. Great conversation. I asked for a clean cut, kind of professional look, and got exactly that. I'm very happy with it and it was priced extremely reasonably. Went to Cuts Off High because the usually barber shop I go was closed and I desperately needed a haircut. They did a good job getting me an appointment very quickly, which was nice. I had another stylist cut my hair because Ray was in another appointment. My stylist was nice, but we didn't have much conversation. He cut my hair pretty close to what I was looking for, but he forgot to put in a hard part with the clippers, so at the end, I asked him if he could do that for me. He said yes and started giving me a hard part. When he was finished there were some "bumps" that he needed to "clean up" and some uneven areas. When I put my glasses back on I was horrified with what I saw. The hard part, instead of being a thin line to separate my hair, was a massive line on the side of my head. I have had big hard parts and I have had small ones, but this was ridiculous. It is massive and looks severely out of place. I don't think he knew what he was doing when I asked him for this, and I wouldn't be upset if he just said "I don't really know how to do those, maybe try somewhere else" because it was actually a nice haircut before. He obviously messed up and tried to fix it multiple times, only making it worse. Now I have a huge line on the side of my head and it is extremely embarrassing. The bad part is there is nothing I can do to fix it. I will have to wait for my hair to grow back out before it looks relatively normal. Overall, I don't think I'll be making my way back here and might advise my friends against it. I'll stick to Teck's. read more

I really liked Ray so it makes writing this review a bit harsh - but I just didn't like what he did with my cut or color. My guess is that he may be more talented with men's cuts but maybe not as much with women's (or perhaps it was just my isolated experience). He's a nice guy, great stories, interesting conversation - but he chopped my hair off without actually asking me how much I wanted to go or whether I wanted to go from mid-back length to shoulder length hair. Additionally, he gave me a partial highlight, and I just didn't find it all that great. The color wasn't vibrant, the set-up - not that meticulous. I also suggested that he fix my bangs up a bit, and he said that I should just leave it as is - and that I'll see that they're better this way. I ended up just going home and trimming my bangs. Ray's a great guy but I just didn't enjoy the haircut or color I received, and I won't be returning. Sorry, Ray, but sometimes I think Yelpers are a bit too happy-go-lucky on Yelp and don't focus on whether something is a good product vs. whether the business has a good soul. You've got soul, but the product left much to be desired. read more
