I used Custom Electric for a small residential job... installation of a smart ceiling light fixture, and a couple of Nest hardwired smoke detectors. Jack came out with an assistant within a week of my call, and finished the job in under an hour. I was most impressed that he repaired my defective light fixture (it was brand new, but had shipping damage), and got the unit installed! Jack's team at Custom Electric were incredible! When making an offer on new home, our inspection showed that the home had old knob & tube wiring. We had 4 electricians provide estimates to determine the cost of removing all of it for safety, and we gave the project to Jack. He & Charles arrived on a holiday to start the work and he was here every single day for almost two weeks to get the entire house rewired, installed recessed lighting in two rooms, added a new electrical panel outside, raised the power line to the garage, removed extra unneeded wires from the exterior of the home, added an electric car charger to the garage and fixed the power to the garage door opener, installed a video doorbell, added dimmers to several rooms, and installed all new light fixtures. Nathaniel was in our crawl space under the house, to climbing around in the attic to rewire in some tight spaces and he did a great job installing fixtures and outlets. They even kept making holes to a minimum, to keep from having to patch a ton of dry wall. ALL THAT in just over a week. Jack's team did all this, completed on time before our move-in date, for a very fair price. More than fair, in fact. As the project became larger than the original estimate and he honored the original price. Jack was honest, trustworthy, professional, and very knowledgeable. He is not just an electrician, he is also an electrical engineer, so he really knows the best way to tackle projects large and small. I've sat on this review for a while now, and contemplated whether or not to write it - but my experience with Jack has been bothering me for weeks now, so I've decided that it's time. I've worked with Jack on two occasions - and this previous time will be my last, without question. I'll start with the pros first, to be fair: Jack was able to come over the day that I called him, and has always been good with follow up/staying on me if I get busy with something else. The jobs themselves have always been completed with care, and I have no doubt in his abilities as an electrician. I've ultimately been happy with the work that was performed, so if you don't care about personality or having Jack offend you/everyone you know, then I guess I would recommend him. However.... Over the course of 45 minutes (the last time Jack was in my house), he and his assistant managed to offend the following people/communities: My neighbor (who we love), the LGBTQ community (mostly transgender individuals), pretty much all women (saying that they shouldn't be allowed to inspect homes or work in certain fields like construction), lower income households, real estate agents, etc etc etc. The list honestly goes on. I eventually just stopped replying to him altogether and wanted him to finish the work so he would leave my house. I felt gross afterwards, and continue to feel angry about the topics discussed. It was literally nonstop, and he would jump from making fun of one marginalized group to the next. It's almost like he wanted to get a reaction out of me? I was shocked when he finally left. I also continued to ask Jack, over the entire 45 minutes, if he was able to provide me with any sort of estimate or even just an idea of what the job would cost. He would laugh and say things like "10 million dollars", and then never actually answer my question. I wasn't hassling him on price - I just wanted to know what to expect so I wasn't left with a huge bill that I wasn't ready to pay for. I needed him to fix a tiny issue with just 1 switch that I couldn't do myself, but he had his assistant pull out all of the GFIs in my kitchen, re-wire them, lengthen the wires in each box, etc. All that would have been great, but I did not ask them to do that and it added to the cost. I continuously asked him to just focus on the 1 switch I needed help with, but my requests apparently fell on deaf ears. I would also ask him what the issue was with each box, trying to make sense of them pulling everything apart and he just kept saying "well, it's not wired right". He would never elaborate beyond that, no matter how many times I asked him. The entire time that his assistant was doing work (that I had not asked them to do), they both joked/laughed about all-gender bathrooms, mocked transgender individuals, called them names which I won't repeat here and made sure they let me know their stance/beliefs on gender. This job was completed over a month ago at this point, and I'm still angry with how I felt after it was done. My (tiny) problem is fixed - but I will never allow Jack or his assistant in my homes ever again. The bill ended up being $275. I don't even know if that's an appropriate cost of not (45 mins of work, 1 switch re-wired for my garbage disposal and a couple of ground wires lengthened, basically), but I just wanted to give people an idea of what to expect cost-wise. Oh ya - and you can forget about any sort of mask wearing. The first time we used Jack was during peak covid (summer 2020). I had to continuously ask him to wear his mask inside the house, but he just kept pulling it down and coughing all over my house. It was lovely. Jack listened to our problem and suggested we call Xcel, as it sounded like a power company issue. Not only was he right, but he followed up a little while later to make sure all was resolved. Jack and Nathaniel came to my house on short notice and did a great job taking care of my issue. He was easy to get a hold of and fit me into his schedule that was convenient for both of us. I had a wall socket that kept shorting out on me and Jack and Nathaniel quickly diagnosed the problem, replaced/rewired the socket, and saved me from potential fire hazard. Ben F and Karen S both left reviews warning me of their experience with Jack but I overlooked them due to all of the positive reviews. Huge mistake. You guys, in my years of relying on yelp and trusting reviews, this one let me down more than ever before. I'll spare you the details, but over the course of 3 weeks, multiple (10+) calls with jack trying to track him down (he went to FL, he was in the mountains, etc etc), two visits to my house, I was left in the dark (literally). While jack was attempting to hang a light the power was cut in half of my upstairs, both of which were my infant and kids rooms where I rely on electricity to power their baby monitors. I told Jack I absolutely needed power restored ASAP and he gave me a date 1 week out to return, which ultimately he never ended up coming back due to him not wanting to go in my attic to deal with the electrical wiring as he mentioned he has sinus problems (I told him my husband would go up there if we could use his ladder otherwise we had no way of even getting up there to help). Not only was my experience a huge hassle, but ultimately ended up putting my family at risk with exposed wires and no electricity. What a shame. I come from a family of electricians and I had never wished so badly one of them lived close to have helped me avoid this huge headache. read more

Jack Rushin of Custom Electric is an experienced electrician who is conscientious, attentive to detail, and who has struck me as genuinely concerned about my situation and my safety. I am happy to give him a good review here on Yelp, and encourage people to contact him (see my note below). My story: I called on a Sunday afternoon for help with a breaker that just wouldn't flip back on (even after I unplugged everything on that particular circuit). Jack came out around 4pm Sunday (which was awesome), quickly diagnosed my problem (had a couple of bad breakers), and then identified some other issues we had while he was out. About an hour and a half after he arrived, all the power was back on. He came back a week later to fix the neutral bar in my home's breaker box. The issue was that the previous owners (it's an older home, so there's been a few) took shortcuts when added new circuits to the home for an A/C, a hot tub, etc. Jack recommended fixing these shortcuts, as he could see that the neutral bar was not working properly (some of the screws couldn't be tightened). While this was a safety issue, Jack didn't try and scare me into this fix. Instead, he offered advice/guidance, explained why he would fix it, and let me make my own choice. (BONUS: my lights don't flicker anymore...loose neutral bar was the cause and I had no idea). NOTE: When it came to getting the neutral bar fixed, Jack was uncertain about when he would like to do the work, and rescheduled with me a couple of times. Once he rescheduled because of the weather, the other time it was unspecified. I might have "dinged" my review here on Yelp because of the rescheduling, but Jack shared that he has some health issues. Since Jack's follow-up visit with me wasn't an emergency, he felt comfortable rescheduling me. I have no problem with this, only I'd advise him to communicate that with people, as most are sympathetic to this if they're informed. Suffice to say, if you have an emergency on an evening or weekend, OR if you have a problem that another electrician has said will cost thousands, call Jack. While I'd rate Jack as a little more cautious than myself, he struck me as completely honest, and I think caution is a good thing in an electrician. read more

I just purchased a home in Englewood, and Custom Electric has been a LIFESAVER! I was impressed with their ability to work with older wiring, and commitment to finishing the job they started. Story Time! - In the first night I spent in the house, three of the outlets in the kitchen mysteriously stop working. After playing Marco Polo with the service box, the three outlets appeared to not be on any of the known circuits! According to my fitness watch, I went for a 10 mile run that night based on my pulse and blood pressure as I worried that I had a short in a line that wasn't connected to the old service box in my house. Called Custom Electric that morning and they were there early the next afternoon. They found that the issue was a broken wire from one of the functioning outlets! Then when they asked what the outlets would be used for, they stopped us from having a circuit that couldn't stand the load we were planning! One visit and they stopped a potential fire hazard, made my kitchen ready for modern appliances, fixed an ungrounded outlet, and they were able to give me a quote (on request) for a new service panel and some new outlets being put in. I am perplexed by all of the positive reviews for Custom Electric. I had a bad experience and didn't end up using them on my job. I had contacted Jack in the beginning of April for a job to install some new and replacement in an old home. My timeframe for the project was between April 15 and May 15 and needed to be coordinated with some other work being done in the home at the same time. After a very positive initial conversation, I was unable to get Jack to commit to come to the house to even give me an estimate. He was finally able to stop by around April 20th and he was in the home for about an hour assessing the work. He explained to me that the job would be extensive, and probably run around $5000 (maybe more) and would require re-wiring the entire house and would take about a week. However, given all of his experience and great reviews, I felt comfortable making a verbal agreement for him to start the work as soon as possible, but he strung me along for another 2 weeks delaying the start the job even further. When he stopped returning any of my calls I finally gave up and hired another electrician. I was glad that I did because it only took the new person (another master electrician) about 1-1/2 days and cost about 1/3 of what Jack had quoted. It did not require a total re-wire - just some minor reconfigurations of the existing wire. I wish that Jack had just told me upfront that he did not want to do my job so that I could have avoided major delays in my overall project flow. read more

The project couldn't be finished in one trip so I gave him $180.00 cash for the first part and he said I should call him when the other work was done and he said his next part of the job would be easier and cheaper, I called two days later and he said he would be here Sunday. and would call first. He called and said he would be here in 40 minutes. After waiting an hour I called him and he had not left the "shop" yet. He and another man came, after another hour, finished the job and then Jack, after tracking mud through the house, handed me a bill for $640! I complained so he reduced the bill to $450.00 if I paid in cash so he could get out of paying his taxes. I didn't want to not pay. Jack has been beyond helpful in our times of electrical need. On one occasion, after a wind storm, the entire electric to our house was left bent and out of commission. He repaired it so that we could function and then replaced it properly once parts came in.
