You know how you ask around for a new stylist, bring a picture of the hairstyle you want, and it NEVER turns out right? Well at Custom Cuts it did. I got exactly the hair cut I wanted (a James Dean look that other barbers and stylists had been unable to do). I got it in 15 minutes (she's really fast). And I got it for a measly 20 bucks--half what most salons charge. (I gave her a tip on top of that of course.) You should get your hair cut here. Here's a review for 2 difficult hair types + eyebrow trimming: (1) Asian female, untreated straight hair I had my hair cut by both Maro and Tamar (mother and daughter). They are both very passionate about their profession and take great pride in it. My first time was with Tamar, and she was repulsed by how bad the last hair dresser did to my hair. (She really cares!) She gave me her honest opinion that it'd take 2 haircuts to fix it, and explained how exactly she was going to fix my hair. She was fast and precise. She gave me a time line to come back. The second time, Maro cut my hair. I told her what Tamar said, and I wanted my hair to be "fixed" (e.g. look normal) but planned to grew it long later. Maro then cut and styled my hair, but I didn't like the extra length she kept for me. Without a sign of annoyance, she offered to cut it again, and also rinsed off the hair product in my hair for a clean cut. Maro was patient throughout the process. Then wallah, I feel reborn again. (2) Caucasian male, thinning, curly hair Tamar cut his hair twice, both under 20 min plus a bit of styling. I have to say that it rivals the fancier salons he used to visit, and Tamar's hair style is even easier to maintain! Her haircut made his hair looked fuller and more evenly covered. Tamar took drop-in the first time, and a quick appointment the second time. (3) Eyebrow trimming by Talin It was convenient to get my eyebrows done right before my haircut. Talin offered waxing and plucking, and I chose the later. Talin was nice enough to reshape my eyebrows when I didn't like how it turned out first. The men's haircut was only $15.95 and not only did Tamar take the time to learn my hair and cut it properly, but she also did this razor comb method on top so my hair lies down easier. Maro--thank you SO much for your efficient, beautiful work! I made an appointment for 5:15 last Friday to get my hair washed, cut, and styled. I was very happy with her attention to detail for my hair. I wear a pixie, so as simple as it is, or seems, it is a very technical cut. Talin really went above and beyond for my brows. I am half Taiwanese half Swedish so I have thick straight eyebrows like a closeted caterpillar and a confusing facial shape to work with. Family owned business that makes you feel like you're part of the family when you come in. The most energetic, fun staff you will ever meet. Talked to me and my best friend for a couple hours while I got my eyebrows beautifully tinted and waxed for a great price and she got a hair cut and deep condition. I've always had very light and sparse eyebrows needing to apply makeup every day to make it seem like I had eyebrows, now after getting them tinted and shaped I can wake up and go without makeup without being insecure. The haircut came out horribly (that's really what matters at the end of the day) but the rest of the experience was also not great. I had an appointment, and I'll admit I was 5 mins late, but when I got there it was empty except for a younger and older lady. I apologized and told them I had a 3 o'clock appointment but they couldn't find it. The younger lady left and the older lady who introduced herself as Maro. The groupon was for a wash and cut and I assumed the wash was before the haircut, as it was with most places I had been to, I reminded her of the wash in the groupon as she started to drape me in the cutting chair and she said that was after the cut. Okay... she then asked me when the last time I washed my hair was and if I had any product. I told her last night before I slept and I didn't have any product in it (frankly I thought my hair was going to be washed again before the cut but guess not). She said good, because product jams up and ruins the clippers. Okay... I told her my hair does tend to get oily and I normally wash before cuts but she said it shouldn't be a problem. I told her I short on the sides, taken down quite short up top with scissors. Easy stuff. She said said okay and then told me how my hair should be much shorter towards the back and longer in the front. Told me how my hair needs shape and lots of texturizing and kind of shit on the person who cut my hair before saying, "Who cut your hair?! Was it a barber? Don't worry." and then proceeded to tell me about her 30 years of experience how she owned salons before, how the other lady I saw before was her daughter. She kind of seemed like she wanted to do her own thing. As she started to cut she pushed my hair towards the right and I told her I actually push it the other side because my hair doesn't lie towards the right and pops up unless I slather on ungodly amounts of product. She was preparing to cut it as if I parted my hair to the right. She said okay and then proceeded to take some chunks out while still parted to the right and then pushed it back towards the other side before I was about the gently remind her. Seemed like a mistake or that she wanted to do her own thing but I didn't really say much. Once the 3:30 appointment guy came in at 3:20, she seemed to be in a rush to get to him. The clippers stopped at some point during the cut which she said was due to my oily hair... but then she put them on the cord to charge so I'm pretty sure it was just the battery that ran out but for some reason my oily hair was blamed. That didn't leave a great taste in my mouth. I could barely tell what she was doing for the rest of the cut. She kept hacking away with different tools and it looked alright when it was wet (as every haircut does). Then she started doing the edges and man did she screw up. She tried to hack into my hairline on her own whim with a guard on the clipper so now I've got a chunk of faded out hairline and chunks where it's full so it looks like I've got a weird combo of receding hairline and hair loss on the edges. Didn't end there, as she was washing my hair at the end she said "I should have washed your hair at the beginning". What does that mean?! Does that mean it turned out poorly? If you knew that part way through the cut, why didn't you stop to wash my hair and then continue? To be honest it was probably because her next appointment was here and she was in a rush to get to him. Paying was equally bad. She had been complaining about how her credit card thing was malfunctioning and she was on the phone with them all day so I didn't dare pull out my card. I asked her to break a $20 so I could tip (I wasn't going to tip big honestly because the cut wasn't great). She ruffled through everything and was only able to pull out $8. The next guy who in a hurry ended up stepping in to break my $20 but he could only give me 2 tens and then Maro asked me how much I wanted back. Not wanting to tip $3 by taking the $5 bill, I took the 3 ones and left... forced (partly by my decency) to give a 28% tip on a bad haircut. After seeing how truly bad it is at home, I'll have to fix it somehow because I can't go out in public like this, especially with the hacked up and uneven hairline. read more

This was by far the worst haircut experience I have EVER had. Came in with my husband today around 2:30 to get cuts for both of us while Tamar was doing another client's hair. The tipoff should have come from how messy and disorganized the salon looked, but we decided to stay hoping it would be a diamond in the rough. Tamar put her client under the drier to let her hair process and took my husband into the styling chair. My husband tried to describe the style that he wanted, and requested that she perform the cut with scissors (he has had bad experiences at other salons using clippers to rush through a haircut). Tamar *insisted* that using clippers would deliver a better result, saying that "because it's summertime, a scissor cut won't last as long because of the sun and vitamin D making your hair grow". Okay.... moving on. She rushed through the entire haircut and dropped the scissors on the floor multiple times, knocked over almost everything on her table, and stopped twice to answer the phone, and once to take care of her other client who asked for some help getting huge patches of hair dye off the side of her face. As Tamar ran to the back to get a towel for her, I made eye contact with her customer. The panicked expression on her face should have been the tipoff. My husband is very picky about his hair, so at this point I was still willing to go through with my own haircut, hoping that my husband would feel better once he got home, showered, and styled it a little. He sat next to me as Tamar finished up her other client, and wouldn't look at me. His face and neck were COVERED in hair. After finishing up her client, Tamar began on my hair. After "combing it" (pulling all the knots down to the bottom and leaving them there), she began to cut. The cutting wasn't so much the problem as her YANKING my hair was. I have never had such a painful haircutting experience. I almost began to cry, she was pulling my hair so hard. It should be noted that I have never had a haircut where the stylist didn't even bother to wash my hair first or... I don't know... swap out the scissors used on my husband for a clean pair maybe instead of giving them a cursory spray with disinfectant? By the time I was done, my scalp was sore and I felt horribly embarrassed for suggesting this place to my husband. She said that she would texturize my hair "the next time", and I'm wondering what part of the experience gave this woman the impression that would ever come back. My husband set a timer for my haircut- 11 minutes for a woman's haircut. No wash, no blow dry, and excuses about my hair being the wrong texture to do more work on it for the day. My hair is pin straight and healthy... I don't know how her desire to rush through the appointment that I paid for is my fault. At this point, I am at home and my husband has gone back to the salon to ask her to fix his haircut, which is extremely uneven. I will NEVER go back to that salon, and I don't think my husband will ever take my opinion on a haircut again. Tamar, if you are reading this, know that you are not a bad hairstylist. Please just take it much slower next time, pay better attention to your clients, and for the love of God, wash your scissors between cuts. read more

This place is incredible! I think I've got the best haircut I've ever had and It is very affordable. This is better than any of the salons on Newbury St, even when you shell out hundreds of dollars. The owners are very friendly and you feel at ease when you are custom cuts. They have a lot of knowledge about different hairstyles. Tamar had cut my hair. She trimmed, angled and kept the length of my hair like I asked. She framed my face better than anyone has before. I stumbled upon this place on groupon and was very pleased with the haircut and the service from Mora. She is very nice and knows what she's doing! I've been there twice now for a trim. She is always careful to show you how much she is cutting off unlike some people who go crazy and cut too much off when all you wanted was a trim. This will be my new go-to place for hair care. First Impression: The salon is clean, friendly stylists, and has a good amount of natural light. I walked in and a customer who had just seen Nichole, another stylist was wrapping up and was very pleased with his cut. I have to admit it was a nice cut. My Experience: I'll start off by saying I'm very particular especially when it comes to my hair. I have huge scars on the side of my head and rarely can anyone cut it without revealing the scars. Tamar gave me a clean cut that covered the scars and versatility to style my hair a several ways. I like to change my style every day from faux hawk, to business professional comb over, messy bed head, and very sleek. Before Tamar put any product in it already looked good-a good sign that when product gets gooped in it'll look even better! Tamar showed me how to style my hair a few different ways and helped me with a few issues-peace out cowlicks! Knowledge: Tamar and Nicole, another stylist possess a high-level of knowledge. Just by looking at my hair Tamar was able to identify the issues I had and cut my hair in a way to solve for the issues. From the conversation it was obvious Nichole knew what she was talking about as well. Based on the cut I got today and I would visit Nichole or Tamar next time without hesitation. I'm switching my Newbury Street salon to Custom Cuts and highly recommend it. In fact my sisters and mom will probably be visiting Nichole and Tamar. Price: Can't beat it. Up until now, I've been going to Supercuts for my haircuts, and I've always felt like I've gotten a so-so haircut job done. After this experience, I can happily say I won't be going back to that place any more. First time I walked in, Tamara cut my hair. I explained to her what I wanted and told her that I was a little bald in the front and didn't want it to be too short. She listened patiently, and within 15 minutes I had a cut that looked like it came out of hollywood. It was perfectly trimmed, layered, and looked fresh. And it came with great service, and a reasonable price at $20. They are absolutely great. I now look forward to getting my haircuts. read more

The ratings were amazing and it is very close to my home. How hard is a bob style on a healthy straight hair???? Apparently really hard. It is very uneven and jagged. I have to pin my hair and put on a lot of gel every day to cover the disaster. One of my colleagues thought I trimmed it myself!! The place is filthy. Maro didn't change or sanitize her comb and scissors after she finished the haircut on the guy before me. In the middle of cutting my hair she dropped the scissors and picked it up and continue cutting! I've finally found the regular place I'm going to go to get my hair cut! I'm so excited because I've been bouncing around various barbers and hair salons. I met the owner and she impressed me with her knowledge of the industry and products she sells. I went this time for just a trim because I like my hair longer in the winter; but needed some of the extra stuff trimmed off. She knew exactly what I meant and did just that. Furthermore, she discussed product with me and introduced me to the proper product for my hair, which I am now using as it looks so much better than the Ice product I had been using. Decided to give this place a go after paying too much for mediocre haircuts at a lot of high-end salons. After being traumatized by some previous disastrous cuts and colors, I came here for a simple cut (no color) to test it out and I was so pleased with the results! Mora is great, genuine and funny and several community members came in during my cut to say hello; I loved seeing how connected she is to neighbors. Got my hair colored here by Tamar after reading her reviews. She did an amazing job and explained everything to me before it was done and explained why it was necessary. She met with me beforehand to discuss what I wanted to make sure that we were both on the same page. The pricing was a lot less than other salons in the area, but my only small complaint is that it did end up taking longer than expected (2 hours; she initially told me about an hour). read more

Eyebrows are AMAZING! Talin is attentive, knowledgeable, and the consummate professional when it comes to eyebrow styling. She knows exactly what shape best fits your look and face. She definitely knows the importance of eyebrow framing. She takes her time and let's you know upfront that your eyebrows probably need to be fixed from all of the bad / prior waxing.
