When is the high street music retailer HMV not a high street music retailer? When it's a cinema! Recent retail figures for the company have made grim reading and industry analysts speculate that this is their slowness in accepting that digital downloads are gradually taking over the marketplace and they've been slow in developing that side of the business. So, it was interesting to see HMV branch out into a completely different sector. The name gives the clue that they haven't gone into this blind but have teamed up with the Curzon cinema on Shaftesbury Avenue to offer a mixture of blockbusters but also more artsy world cinema offerings. For example, this week's offerings include the general release Bridesmaids to A Separation, an Iranian film and winner of the Golden Bear award at the Berlin international Film Festival. Don't be worried about the rather unprepossessing entrance - the cinema upstairs looks and feels quite boutique. With 3 screens and the largest one only seating around 100 customers, it has quite an exclusive feel to it. The bar is comfortable and a nice place to chill before or after your movie. Definitely worth a look if the large Odeon a few doors down doesn't have anything appealing. Or even if it does! read more

Curzon - Cinema Near Me - London, XGL

I have been eagerly awaiting the opening of this cinema for a few months now, and boy, was it worth the wait!! A partnership between HMV and the Curzon cinema chain that is getting piloted in Wimbledon, lucky me!! It will be screening blockbusters alongside World cinema and even hosting Q&A sessions. It's too exciting, cos i normally have to go into central London for such film related goodness! First impressions, were pretty darn good! A stylish bar/cafe greets you on arrival, stocked with snacks and jack daniels. Other stuff too i expect. Customers are encouraged to buy tickets online and print them out in advance, as there is no box office there. But you can buy tickets from the bar area very easily also. There are 3 screens, with the largest one seating 103 people. They are colour-coded and today i was in the blue room. My god, the seats were amazingly comfortable! Lots of leg room too! Super friendly staff, who came in twice to let us know that the film would be starting in 15 minutes. And the visuals....W O W. Crystal clear! They are using state of the art digital projection, and it shows!!! Ticket prices are rather ace too. They start from as little as £4 if you are a member of the Curzons! Lucky me again! Wimbledon is lucky to have retained one of the few remaining HMV stores. It is well stocked with two floors selling everything from calendars to turntables. The staff are helpful and the prices compare favourably with online retailers. Record stores are dying out so it's good that HMV still has a presence on the High Street. Long may it survive! read more

This is one of my fav places in London. Great films, great atmosphere with nice comfy seats, great for leaning back and having a cheeky snooze. I've been a member for the last 2 years, during weekdays you can watch a brilliant indie movie for less than £6. Best of all you rarely get the popcorn brigade in! Fantastic little cinema in the heart of Wimbledon - super comfy seats, small screens (so wouldn't be ideal if you prefer the IMAX-style megascreenings) and a lovely little bar, all tucked away above an HMV store. No cheaper than the bigger chains (we still paid £12 each for adult tickets) but would definitely visit again, as it felt a little more personal even though we were watching one of the year's biggest films (Hunger Games). The staff were also very friendly, which makes all the difference. read more

Amazing cinema with a great vibe. Terrific alcohol-free options and lovely popcorn. Could use a bit more friendly staff and more comfortable seating. The saloons are spacious and small but cozy. Prices are what you would expect for the experience but not outrageous. read more

This is a great little outpost screening films that can't be found at the local Odeon. The cinema is hidden away upstairs above HMV, and it's quiet for a place on the main street. When I went the screen was half full, but still had a good atmosphere. The cafe section is a little dark/gloomy, but still a pleasant place to wait for your film to start. read more

Nice, big, comfy seats make this place a great spot to watch a film. They also have a bar so you can take a beer or glass of wine in with you. Top spot! read more

Great little cinema showing films you don't always get at the Odeon - when you combine that with the cafe & bar what is not to like?

I like to book on line and this site wasn't perfect. It wouldn't accept Amex, wouldn't allow choice of seats, offered no special rate for elderly parents and there was no help phone number. read more

Agree with Mark O. Went to see Macbeth today. Film cancelled because of a problem with sound. Customers had to get staff during trailer to notify them. Staff apologised and said they would fix it. Unable to do anything they stopped film. One staff member told customers to wait in bar area and they would offer coffee while they tried to move film to another screen. Said it would take maybe 20 minutes but they could show without trailers. No issue with this, happy to wait. Almost immediately another staff member said film was cancelled and offered a refund- her explanation- it was impossible to move film as would take too long to upload film and push further films back. No coffee/compensation offered just refund. Think her view was it didn't matter that a few people who paid £8.50 a ticket were left disgruntled as opposed to any delays or no trailers for those paying £12.50 later on in the day. Not good enough! Disappointing customer service hmv curzon, I expected better. read more

Very poor experience today. The lights were not turned off in the cinema at the start of the 3pm showing of 'The Martian' and I had to go outside and ask, missing the first two minutes of the film. Customers were also left to close the door themselves at the start of the movie. No staff doing anything useful outside the screening room at all despite the fact that there were very few customers. I have never seen this happen at a cinema before in my life. I tried to give some feedback at the end of the film and was told, "It doesn't happen often". The complacency of the staff's attitude toward customer service beggars belief. In future I will be watching new films at the Odeon next door, where in my experience customer service has always been faultless (I have no connection with Odeon). read more

I agree that the staff are wonderful, the surroundings very convivial and the range of films excellent. However, I've been trying to book a ticket online, which I've done several times in the past without problems and after filling in all the information noticed that there in nothing to click on which says 'continue' or 'finish payment' etc. Most frustrating. I then tried to get hold of a phone number to speak to someone and rang 118118 - took two employee to eventually give me, one wrong number, it was for the Odeon though I told both of them it was NOT the Odeon that I wanted. The second number was the film times number, which I'd already told them I didn't need as I knew the film time. I simply googled to get the correct number, which I've just rung and it has rung and rung and rung - no answer. I also feel there isn't enough information about the film on the Now Showing page and it's a pity I always need to go to another site to get the info I require - why not attach a link!! Please put pressure on your bosses to ask if something can be done to reduce extortionate parking fees and the fact that the biggest car park closes at 11pm. I still don't know what happened in the final minutes of the excellent 'Little White Lies'. I shall go along tonight and just have to hope there are tickets left and that I won't be paying those parking charges for nothing. read more
