Whirledart is a collection of artists studios that opens its doors from time to time to allow the general public in to see the best of the work produced within. I saw that I'd missed the latest open weekend but was intrigued by the mention of Whirled Cinema, offering interesting and unusual films to view for free on Friday and Saturday nights. The site told me they were open to their artists and friends, so after emailing to check that I, a random stranger, was also welcome (they said I was) I mosied on down there one Friday night with my boyfriend. We were pleased to find everyone was really friendly and welcoming to newcomers. The films are shown in a really cool space under the railway arch on a big screen with excellent sound, and there are some very comfy bench seats to recline on. A small bar at the back of the room is a welcome addition to an already vibey place. It's sometimes hard to believe that independent places like Whirled exist in this town, surrounded as we are by Odeons and Vues charging £8 and more for a cinema ticket. The friendly, open attitude and generosity of the guys who run the place is to be applauded, and they seemed keen for more people to show up to the screenings. If you treat the place with respect you'll be welcome - just make sure you buy a drink at the bar to say thank you. Check out the website (http://www.whirledart.co.uk/cinema/) and sign up to their mailing list to keep informed about what films are showing each week.

The layout is very much the same but the facilities have benefitted from a much needed upgrade like the toilets have been done up, almost all the screens now have premiere seats located at the back. The establishment has decided to get rid of the waffles and replace it with milkshake a instead. Also, they have an array of chocolate bars to add to the shake mixs such as, toffee crisp, malteasers, rollo etc. This is a great addition, especially when you are considering the nice cold drinks to go with the summer films. Additionally, look at your full price receipt brought at the box office as they have been giving out 2 4 1tickets as a nice bonus!

Obviously it works really well for me because I just roll out of my apartment into a theater seat. I can imagine it would work rather well for people living around Canada Water/Rotherhithe because the SQLP complex is rather well served by buses and is a quick walk from Surrey Quays and Canada Water stations. Negative points because of the recent rise in tickets. I remember paying below £7 for several shows once upon a time. That seems like a distant memory now - or perhaps I'm just missing something. Also, for no fault of theirs they have to be penalized because of the lack of pre- and post- movie things to do.

The clue really is in the name but fear not, I'll elaborate a little. This isn't your usual 'rock up and sit down' type cinema, an advance booking online is almost essential as the seating is limited and it's a popular concept so most showings sell out. Tickets are about £16, the selection of movies they show is pretty varied although weighted towards cult classics rather than the latest celluloid masterpieces you would expect at a normal cinema. There are four venues in London where they hold screenings, but this is the only one with surround sound audio. The others are headphones all the way, which might be OK I suppose but I didn't fancy it. Seating comes in the form of rows of low slung deck chairs which kept me comfortable for the entire screening, more than I can say for most cinema seats. They give everyone a blanket too, so you don't end up shivering your fillings out before the credits roll. We watched Blade Runner, which for me is difficult not to enjoy. If I slept in a cardboard box underneath a bridge in the depths of winter but got to watch Blade Runner then I'd probably rate that 5* as well, but don't let that detract from the fact I've rated this 5*. It's fun, it's different and it's cheap too.
