On the outside it looks like a temple to movies as you're getting close to it; it's a huge, imposing oval of a building in the middle of the street. But the temple illusion is shattered quickly as to get to the place you have navigate into one of several tunnels with some of the local homeless community and their respective full use of the place as a toilet. This is especially disconcerning if you go to a late showing. Once you get inside, your feeling will shift from slightly tense to slightly underwhelmed. The interior here is kind of like an AMC megaplex from the early 1990's. There's some light celebration of movies going on but it really doesn't appear like some flagship for the BFI, especially given the gravitas they employ on their movie collection video they play before many movies here. Food is also really underwhelming compared to nearly all higher end theaters in the States with full service; I guarantee if you were to visit the first Alamo in Austin that was converted out of a dumpy old 1970's style four theater complex you'd find that experience an order of magnitude better than what you'll get here (and that's before we get into just the attention paid to the love of cinema bv a company like that compared to the vanilla offerings here!) LIke I wrote before, once the movie starts it's very good. If you have a BFI membership like I do and can access the VIP seating, they definitely have more legroom than anywhere else I've been in the country. But overall experience is just deeply underwhelming and they should really overhaul this whole place to truly immerse people in the love of film - even the Everyman chain in London does a way better job of this than this location does.

This place is amazing and if you love cinema and are going to see a spectacular then I would recommend popping your bottom in one of their super comfy seats. Warning: fear of heights, just don't bother! I saw Batman here and as a HUGE comic book fiend it was superb seeing the portrait stil shots displayed as they were intended. God bless the IMAX! Oh and its nice and convenient right by waterloo .

It's a picture house cinema which means that along side blockbusters they show independent and art house films and are often host to international film festivals. Providing your date isn't of complete waste man caliber, it's also very romantic. The main screen is an old theatre with lots of red, plush seats, high ceiling with fancy ornamental gold bits all over it. They also have a fully stocked bar and sell all the best kinds of ice cream and home made cakes which is useful if your date has the munchies.

Add to that the fact that you can buy alcoholic drinks to take in to the film and it's a win/win. The main bar downstairs is really nice, with great outdoor seating which is probably the best for people watching in Brixton. Up-Stairs at the ritzy is a much more intimate space for a drink or coffee and has some great music and performance nights, often linked to film, well worth checking out. The Ritzy also puts on some great film festivals and similar events, has special screenings for parents with young children, the visually-impaired, etc. and really tries to be part of the local community. Finally, if you find yourself here and at any of the other PictureHouse cinemas in London with any degree of regularity then a membership card is WELL worth the 30 odd quid it costs (it's even better value if you are a concession or get a joint membership). It gets you three free tickets (which pretty much pays for the membership alone) plus £2 off every other ticket you buy during the year, the quarterly guide posted to you and 10% off drinks and food at the bar and counter. Add to all that the fact that Brixton is one of the most vibrant parts of London and you have to say that it's pretty hard to beat the Ritzy for an afternoon or evening out.

The layout is very much the same but the facilities have benefitted from a much needed upgrade like the toilets have been done up, almost all the screens now have premiere seats located at the back. The establishment has decided to get rid of the waffles and replace it with milkshake a instead. Also, they have an array of chocolate bars to add to the shake mixs such as, toffee crisp, malteasers, rollo etc. This is a great addition, especially when you are considering the nice cold drinks to go with the summer films. Additionally, look at your full price receipt brought at the box office as they have been giving out 2 4 1tickets as a nice bonus!

Obviously it works really well for me because I just roll out of my apartment into a theater seat. I can imagine it would work rather well for people living around Canada Water/Rotherhithe because the SQLP complex is rather well served by buses and is a quick walk from Surrey Quays and Canada Water stations. Negative points because of the recent rise in tickets. I remember paying below £7 for several shows once upon a time. That seems like a distant memory now - or perhaps I'm just missing something. Also, for no fault of theirs they have to be penalized because of the lack of pre- and post- movie things to do.

I think everyone should see something there at least once. My 2 hiccups were pricing - it's £19 to get non-reclined seats on the 3rd level far up and far back to where the screen is so small, £26 to get reclined seats on the side rows of the middle floor (called upper circle), then £31 to get good seats. Given that the view of the screen from the £26 seats still felt small and far, it seems the experience is priced a bit too high to make it worth it as in - if your not ready to shell £31, you're better off going to a "regular" theater. All of that, I was treated very well, the floors, bathrooms, even escalators and waiting areas were squeaky clean, the theater was stunning, and I had quite an okay time.

I inquire inside the movie theatre and the staff was so friendly and informed me they were hosting the global premiere of the new tv show Pistol based on the band the sex pistols on Hulu/Disney Plus. I even got to see two episodes of the show after the carpet. They gave us popcorn and water as well as a souvenir t-shirt. All episodes of the show are out now!
