Let's face it Dalston's a bit grim. At the best of times. Sure it's cool and all, there are the pop ups and the Red Stripes and the asymmetrical haircuts... but it's not the cheeriest of places. Step up Rio! A charming old cinema, it's got that faded Art Deco glamour that is just irresistible! Sure you literally sit knee to knee with your neighbours, but it's cosy and as intimate as you want to make it... Despite showing a huge range of high brow independent foreign films, Rio isn't snobby, and blockbuster smashes usually get top billing too. A wonderful departure from the Vues and Odeons of the world with their £10 popcorn and surly staff, Rio is a total gem.

This is one of those older cinemas converted for modern use. They have a bar here and you can enjoy a drink while you watch a movie. The only problem is the seats are still in the same original layout and you end up tilting your head around the person in front of you to see it. The selection of films is a different mater and I've watch quite a few good ones here.

The seats in the actual cinema are soft, warm and comfy with plenty of leg room. There's a sofa aisle in the middle and back of the cinema which you can book at no extra cost. I image they're the first to go though. Bad points: There are no tables inside the cinema so they don't recommend bringing in actual dishes from the restaurant side of the cinema. Snacks and drinks are seriously expensive (but no more than any other cinema). Tickets cost £13.50 plus a £1.50 booking fee.

I say…read morethis because the area, though a cultural hub for many people in industry (peep show was filmed here, Shaun of Dead house not too far away, Gillian Anderson use to live here, amongst many others still in area) never really had a cinema to go to until the wonderfully small Arthouse came along. This picturehouse is one of many in the chain. I go to the newly opened Central one now quite a bit but this new one is now my closest. It has about 5-6 screens and I went to see Bridge of Spies on screen 4. The sound could have been a tad louder and I think there was not much surround sound. Saying that I mentioned this to manager and they mentioned it would in future. I went on officially it's 4th day of opening. I was told screen 5 is a favourite because it is intimate and has only about 26 seats. Cool. I asked to see screen 1, their prize biggest screen because i might see Star Wars there soon. The seats are like sofa seats. All of them. And there are double seats. The screen was higher than usual because they have a platform ready for future Q&A's. I will go see that screen but not sure it's best for something quite as epic as Star Wars. There's a nice cafe downstairs to people watch, and a main restaurant to see even better looking down upon Main Street. All in all. I liked my it's visit. Comfy, obviously clean and nice staff. Will be back for more to check other screens too. UPDATE - DEC '15: Checked out the brand new Crouch End PH. Kicking rainy Mondays onto the curb with it's cheap tickets! Steven Spielberg & Tom Hanks have made a great film with Bridge of Spies. Written by the Coen Brothers a real classic spy/war film. Love a bit of espionage! The cinema itself was lovely. Nicely laid out with cafe at bottom and many screens dotted around. I went into Screen 4 and it had good sound. Next time I will try for their main one.

The sound system is good, and the seats are comfortable. On Mondays, they have cheap night....£5 for members and £7 for non-members. Also, a few times I've bought a ticket far in advance(as I'm very picky about my cinema seat), and then it turns out my plans change so I can't go. It's never been a problem to get the ticket price refunded(as long as I call before the movie starts). Event-wise...I've been to a couple comedy shows in The Attic, plus to some exclusive member events..like a midnight fancy-dress premiere of Game of Thrones season 5, or a screening of The Graduate which was part of the Disaronno Film Series where every attendee got a goodie bag with a full bottle of Disaronno(among other things). What prompted me to write this review though, was a recent visit where I tried one of their food specials(occasionally they will have specials that are associated with films). On this occasion, it was the Captain American Bucky Burger. OMG...it was massive!! When we ordered, the server looked at me alittle funny and said, "I hope you're hungry...I've never seen anyone finish it". Although not the best burger I've ever had, it was pretty tasty, and worth ordering just to see if I could eat it all(I almost did...left a bit of bun.) Hackney Picturehouse is definitely more than just a movie theatre. It's a decent restaurant, event space, hangout and coffeeshop. A great addition to the Hackney community!

I live just down the street from this place, and despite how hipstertastic it sounds, I really like being in the vicinity of a cinema that shows its neighborhood a lot of love. The Attic space is amazing, and I first came to it about a month into my London transplanting, and we did Ukelele Karaoke. That set the tone for how amazing this place is, just the four of us crooning like backalley kitties. And yes, we did do Journey's Don't Stop Believing. I've since been back for other screenings, like the recent short film programme by Short Sighted Cinema that focused on Hackney. Lounging on a couch while sipping a Meantime pale ale is not a bad way to spend a Sunday evening. The Picture House goes out of their way to do special screenings for various groups, like the Silver Screen ones are only £3 for people over 60 (and they get free tea and biscuits. They also do kid/parent-friendly screenings, and even autism-friendly ones. In short, lots of love for the Picture House. I'm even going back this weekend for a free Fringe festival film!

Very hipster but so busy it does take away from the cinema experience we were paying for. For example, there's signage pointing to a dull concrete staircase that indicates the cinemas physical location, in the basement, but I still felt a little lost trying to collect tickets and buy snacks. One positive is that you can purchase food from the restaurant upstairs to bring down. Unfortunately, service is somewhat chaotic, as was the cinema's waiting room arrange bets for guests not eating in the actual restaurant. We ended up standing in a hallway downstairs waiting for theatre's only screen to be cleaned and re-opened. In our case, this was 15 minutes later than the actual scheduled start time of our movie. The theatre itself is luxuriously spacious. Cashmere blankets were available and each plush armchair is separated by a little table. So snacks are accommodated but no holding hands during scary movies I'm afraid. Things were fine once the movie got started but for £18 a ticket, I'm not a fan of the chaos we had to get through to get into the theatre.

I've never before encountered a video store with so much space dedicated to artists' biographies and retrospectives, nor such a vast collection of short compilations. They also have a cherry picked collection of documentaries - I have trouble not taking the entire shelf home with me when I pay a visit since they've got so many that sound intriguing and got top-marks at film festivals (Sundance, Cannes, Toronto), but for whatever reason, never made it into the popular distribution a la Michael Moore (though they have him too). Oh, and of course, it goes without saying that their classics section is also phenomenal - complete with companion book volumes upstairs on sale to go along with certain particularly notable films - for the true cinephiles. The staff is uber knowledgeable about what's in the store's collection - it's clear to see that these are the types that breathe, sleep, and dream film. And the prices are pretty reasonable - especially if you go for the unlimited rental option, which only costs £20 (otherwise, it's £3 per rental). *Only* complaint is that the films are organized by directors... which I'm sure is totally intuitive for die-hard film lovers... but not always so much for those of us who are a little less erudite - I mean, I appreciate the education I've received on this matter and all as a result... but it's not always the most convenient!
