Which gym in the City features an indoor-running track, a quite decent-size pool and four locker…read morerooms (2 men and 2 women)? - Well, the Virgin Active at the Barbican does and I am quite happy to have been their member for the past few months. In fact, I've not had a bad experience here yet: the staff is always very friendly and forthcoming (especially the cleaning team deserves some kudos here!) and the classes they offer are great, including the instructors. In fact, I've mostly come to the gym to attend the Ashtanga Yoga during the lunch hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Rachel, the instructor, is great: she's not one of these airy-fairy yoga instructors, who only babbles about spirituality etc. In fact, her approach is two-fold: she wants to teach us the right poses, but at the same time she wants us to understand the meaning behind of it! (It's all about the breathing technique!!!) Anyway, I would highly recommend joining this gym if you either live and/or work around the Barbican area...it's always good to come here and get a little break from the daily grind...

I've been a member of Virgin Active gyms since I moved to…read moreLondon, but there's something about the quality of instructors that come to this location as well as the Islington location that are really worth mentioning. If you have the chance, here are some instructors that are worth following: Rachel's Ashtanga Yoga Class: Rachel does not mess about, so this isn't your 'come and relax for an hour' situation - this is a sweating, pushing, breathing, challenging workout that I never would have expected from a yoga class. If you're not doing anything else correctly, you'll be breathing. Tony's Box Fit, Circuit, Boot Camp and Power Station Classes: If feeling the burn is anywhere on your agenda, attend one of Tony's classes. Come focused and come prepared (sweat towel close at hand) because he is relentless. And awesome. Peter's Spin Class: The perfect soundtrack, the most amazing intervals and even a 5-minute section in the middle where you're able to do your own thing. (Hills? Sprint? Intervals? Riders choice!) I love it. If you do attend a class from one of the instructors above, make sure you get to the gym early. They will all fill up quickly.

He's designed my workouts, he's defined the shape of my meal plan with targets for each of the main macronutrients while leaving it up to me to choose the foods to achieve those targets, he's easily contactable for any questions that arise while I'm away from the gym, whether it be related to training tips or supplements to use to aid recovery. The gym itself has top notch equipment and since every client in the gym is working one-on-one with a personal trainer, I've never experienced overcrowding. Oh, and make sure not to miss the (chocolate) protein shakes after your workout! Bottom-line: it is expensive and requires discipline, but UP will give you what you need to almost guarantee results as long as you commit to their program. And you and your trainer will define what "results" means for you. Areas to improve: no overnight lockers means you must bring everything with you each session. Given the high-end product they offer and the price point, I'd love to see the protein shakes included as complimentary ;)

Thankfully, Soho gyms is very accommodating, and offer a wide range of memberships. I explained that I was only going to be working in the street for a month, and they gave me a months membership. They also do daily and weekly passes. What I was even more pleased about was that I didn't have to pay any membership fee. This gym in Covent Garden is not as big as the other Soho gyms which are dotted around London. However, there are all the machines that you will need, plus a weights room, and a studio room. I remember they had a fantastic version of a cross trainer here, where the foot rests operate separately and rather than just going back and forth, they make a kind of triangle shape. It is difficult to explain, but it gave me a work out which was about 5 times better than a standard cross trainer. The only thing that I thought could be improved on was the girls showers. The showers were communal and felt like old -school shower heads - were the water dribbles out. Definitely not power shower quality.

Well. I don't know what to tell you, other than this: The Third Space is an amazing place. It is attached to the Hotel Marylebone, which is how I came across it, and guests at the hotel have full access to its amenities. It is so well designed that I felt right at home as I walked in. You have a friendly receptionist and plenty of friendly (built)(handsome) personal trainers on hand, ready to help. There is one person on duty just to make sure you know how to use the machines, and I was so grateful for his anything-but-snobby attitude when I asked how to work the elliptical. There is music pumping and a little spin class area with top of the line bikes that looks like a bit of a disco with its flashing lights. The pool has an adjacent steam room (eucalyptus mint essence infused in the steam) and the dressing rooms have dry saunas. You would be crazy not to take full advantage of this place. I loved the yoga and step classes I took in their small dance studio during my stay: the teachers were personable and motivating, while the attendees were all friendly to one another - felt like a good community of people. The changing rooms are comfortable, with hair dryers and straighteners, incredible showers, and an impeccably clean environment. The towels are large and plush. I would recommend the hotel for many reasons, but the opportunity to come back to The Third Space the next time I am in London makes staying anywhere else seem silly. Do not miss out on this amazing facility!
