    Virgin Active - The pool

Pool or pulpit...that is the question!…read more Here at the Virgin Active in Repton Park, they placed a swimming pool right inside a church...how cool is that? When I first entered the pool I was really taken aback and quite mesmerized - it felt a little sacrilegious, but at the same time I very much enjoyed swimming in this beautiful environment. The gym area itself is also quite neat, as you sweat underneath a prettily-decorated vaulted ceiling. There's plenty of exercise equipment, although the weight-lifting area is a little small. This Virgin Active gym is in Repton Park, which was the site of the fomrer Claybury Hospital - a psychiatric hospital. Apparently there's still the ghosts of the past haunting these premises....

I joined this Virgin as it is my local club about a month ago. This Virgin club is nestled within…read morethe closed community (Repton Park), the best way to get here would be by car, although there is a bus stop just outside Repton Park it is still quite a walk when you are inside. This gym has a Costa Coffee inside next to the reception that also includes food (this can get slightly irritating when working out and smelling food) o_O The gym has quite a few treadmills, bikes, rowing machines, free weights, TRX etc, each machine has a tv screen with the ability to plug in your IPhone/IPod which allows you to listen to your music but also you can store your workout data to your phone too. The most amazing area in this gym is the swimming pool, it is absolutely stunning, the whole gym used to be a chapel for the mental institution, so the decor inside is beautiful. Within the pool area, you also have the sauna and steam room, along with some sun loungers and some juice to drink. The only gripe I have is that there is no air-conditioning (but I don't think there is anything they can do about that due to the building structure).

Been a member for 18 months and the experience is getting increasingly frustrating. The workout…read moreexperience in Third Space Soho is not worth the premium price you pay. This is a premium gym, yet the space is relatively small. Recently it's clear the focus has shifted on acquisition rather than retention of members, resulting in the following pain points: - Changing rooms get super crowded: hard to find a free locker, bumping into other people post shower due to sheer lack of space, frequently having to queue for hairdryers - Queueing (behind up to 5 people) for the showers - Temperature issues in the women's changing rooms this winter: the door to the swimming pool is propped open, creating a cold draught in the pool and in the women's shower area. At regular intervals there's showers don't have warm water (worsening shower queues) - Due to overselling of classes happening at prime time there are no treadmills available at from 8AM to 8:45AM every day My husband and I were mid workout this morning, when the personal trainer positioned herself in front of our treadmills, weaved her hands and very rudely shouted "YOU NEED TO STOP NOW!". She and her colleague forced us of the treadmill mid-run, saying that they need it for the class and that there are no treadmills available between 8 and 8:45AM daily. When asked whether that means we can't do our workouts in the future he said "yes, it does, I am sorry. We tried to get more treadmills but it was not possible". So here we are, two fully paying members dishing out £430/month, being told we can't do our workouts. Given their recent focus on acquisition they need to look into expanding their space or stop accepting new members. Treadmills are basic gym equipment and need to be available for members - either limit the class spaces, get more treadmills or expand the gym.

There is a good sized pool, pilates studio and a huge array of classes like Rockstar Bollywood and Burlesque. In truth I could go on for ever with what this gym has. Almost all the other reviews here mention that this is not a place to come to get fit from scratch…read more If you are not at least an intermediate level of fitness you almost certainly won't be able to get through a class and may hurt yourself if not experienced with weights as the demonstrations are very quick. It would also be pretty demoralising! I just came here as it was arranged by friends but it was def too much for me and kind of hurt my confidence even though I've been doing really well to recover from a broken leg. That aside it's a very effective full on work out and combines cardio and strength/resistance training which is a very efficient way to spend an hour. I can totally see how you could burn 1000 calories an hour here (as they suggest) if you are doing pushing yourself to the max. The trainer offers 3 different speeds for treadmill work so there is some flexibility, although there's no easy option! I wouldn't recommend this if you don't like a fairly aggressive (although encouraging) style of training or loud music - you'd be better off outdoors or at yoga (which is my general preference!) - but for what this sets out to be it's really good. There are also some really nice aftercare features - the changing rooms are nicely done with Malin + Goetz shampoo, conditioner and shower gel (although not a lot of room to change!) and they have some delicious smoothies which you can pre order - the one with mango and banana was gorgeous!

Though Y's aren't known for being glamourous or particularly well-equipped, the ones that I frequented in Delaware and Maryland were amazing. I hoped to find a similar gym in my neighborhood, but quickly learned that gyms of that caliber are very expensive. Instead, I chose price & location over equipment and signed on with Fitness4Less. In September, they ran a student promotion for three months of membership for £69 cash. While that is clearly more expensive that £14.99** per month, I was able to avoid setting up direct debit for the UK bank account that I hadn't established yet. I appreciate that there is rarely (never?) a wait for equipment. I can use the elliptical or free weights whenever my heart desires. The reason that I gave this place only 4 stars is because of the limited morning classes Mon-Fri. In the evening (after 5pm), there is a class almost every hour. The range includes yoga, muy thai fighting, zumba, body conditioning, and krav maga. In the morning, there is one pilates and one core conditioning classes *per week*. The rest of the morning classes are spinning. While I enjoy spinning, I find that the bikes are too small for my tall frame (5'9''). I wish that the variety of evening classes was replicated in the morning. On a positive note: the weekend morning classes are great, especially Bogusha's pilates class. She may be over 60-years-old, but she seriously works your body! **The monthly fee is now £15.99/mo.
