I would advise people to steer clear of the Blackburn PC World and buy products online or at a local PC shop, you will find most items a lot cheaper than PC World and you will find a lot more information by doing research online or getting help from the guys at the shops, who I find more knowledgable than PC World staff, who seem to offer the world when they are selling, but couldn't give a toss when things go wrong.

As a retail park location, there is parking right outside which makes it easy to take heavier items home, I was relieved I didn't have to carry my printer too far, that's for sure! The stock in this store is fairly good, I was able to find the specific printer that I was looking for, with ease, which was out of stock at the St Helens store nearby. Like most Currys stores, they seemed to have way too many staff just appearing to be standing around and doing nothing, there seemed to be employees standing around in two cliques talking to each other, I was served quickly enough so that didn't bother me too much. The person who served me was unable to answer certain questions and did have to check with a colleague, I wanted to replace my faulty printer with a new printer of a lower value, I wanted to know what would happen to the remainder value, I originally struggled to get them to understand that I wanted to buy a lower value product, before being told there would be no refunds or store credit BUT if that printer developed the fault, I would still have the original value against a new one. This didn't make much sense to me, as if (as I hope) my next printer works for the foreseeable future, I would have paid more than the actual price, so I don't see how they couldn't at least offer a store credit for the remaining value rather than using it as credit for a future printer purchase on the basis that my new printer breaks down within the guarantee period. 4* - Useful Currys store, one of the better and larger stores within a decent radius, but service could be improved and some bizarre company policies could do with being reviewed.

This is a nice Currys store, located on the upper level of The Trafford Centre, it stocks a good…read morerange of electronics from TVs, to printers, from laptops to various other household appliances, while the store isn't as large as their Warehouse style stores in out of town retail parks, the selection is still ample for a mall location, showcasing some of the on-trend and main items they sell. The store is rather modern and easy to follow, and the staff members seem friendly enough but not overly intrusive, which I like, as it sometimes feels difficult to walk through a Currys store without being bothered by half a dozen employees. 4* - A good selection of electronics and a nice addition to the Trafford Centre. The selection is limited though compared to larger Currys store, and with it being a mall location, it lacks parking, making it harder to take home bigger and bulkier items straight away, so it is a nice store for convenience, but I much prefer their retail park locations.

Well a while ago I took my PC in because it was overheating and kept shutting itself down and also the DVD wasn't working, they looked at it while I was there and said they could see the problem and had the part needed in stock. I asked if they had a slightly larger case for my PC as I had fitted a new power pack and could no longer fit the sit on, they had none in stock except for towers which were larger than I wanted but they found a secondhand one in the back and let me have that one. They fixed it and put it in the new case while I waited and charged very reasonably. While I was there I bought a set of headphones which were also a reasonable price. I like to use small businesses when I can and found DATA reasonable and run by a friendly couple. I am about to ring them for a quote on something else now and am sure I will use them again.

The in-store signs led me to explore the wrong part of the store; I was redirected with a cursory glance and directional hand-gesture, when I asked where my item was located. Once I found what I was looking for, I asked - at the enquiry desk - if it would be suitable for my specific purposes. The first member of staff said it wouldn't. I asked him if he was sure and his (more senior) colleague replied that it would indeed be fine. So, as the previous reviewer suggests, staff can vary in their knowledge levels. Once you have your item and are ready to pay, you'll need to queue at one of the two tills, by the door. Overall it was an experience that provided what I needed, on a very basic level, but it was far from a pleasurable shopping experience or one that surpassed my expectations. Probably best for basics or essentials rather than a 'treat'.

Their prices are competitive and incredibly reasonable. If you have any questions or anything you want to query, they will be back to you in seconds. I can safely say they were use full, helpful and have a great sense of humour. I won't bore you with the specs that I chose. But I will tell you that I used their "Build from scratch" method. You pick what processor you desire, and work your way through picking the RAM, Case, GPU e.t.c so that you can build your perfect model. after you've ordered you are given several payment formats, as well as a screen to track what you've purchased, and at what "stage" through the making they are. In the end I believe my original order turned out to be roughly around £630, including mouse/keyboard/monitor and an extra DVI. However, after talking to associates who "know there stuff" on computers, I ended up amending my order the second it was complete with building. They charged me a small fee as they had to "dismantle" and re build with my extra order. They informed me this would be 3-4 days...it took 2 hours, and was dispatched the same day. Once received, the machine is perfect! and they offer a great after sale service. Couldn't ask for a better produce for my budget or better experience.

Luckily enough, I stumbled upon PC Casualty less than two hundred metres from my doorstep. Despite looking a little bit dubious from the outside, the interior is exceedingly professional and the, possibly Russian, assistant quickly allayed my fears by assuring me that he saw 'five or six identical problems each week' and that it was likely that it would be able to be repaired entirely. The bill was over one hundred pounds including VAT but in that situation you really are paralysed with little option but to fork out and I doubt PC World even often a repair service for the computers they sell. It was fixed within three days and they telephoned me to let me know. Overall, a very pleasant outcome.

Although its not as big or busy as is its rival Micro direct down the street, PC casualty are able to give a much more customer focused service where others will either right off or wipe clean your hard drive erase your files these guys at least make an effort to fix the problem. If you are have problems with your PCs or laptops and have important information on them i would recommend coming to these guys because big shops are either to busy to fix the actual problem and keen to replace parts.

I have to say, whenever I've gone into Maplin when one of the men in my life has been in there, I've always stood by for a good twenty minutes while they engage the assistants in a very technical conversation. Last time I experienced this I was sceptical as I listened, thinking, those questions are way too specific for a sales assistant. How wrong I was. Out came incomprehensible jargon about wattage and cables and warmth and flange. Some of that may have been made up. Oh mercy me. This guy was only a blooming expert. So it's safe to say that Maplin employ people who know what they're talking about. Similarly, ages ago my father was buying some kind of cable that would... do something with the computer and the TV. Again, the guy spoke another language, one my dear dad perfectly understood. The one beef I do have with Maplin is that things seem a tad unnecessarily expensive in there, when it comes to things like adapters for European plug sockets and the like. But as well as a range of intricate electrical goods, fusers, gender changers (gender changers?), they do sell fun stuff, such as electronic gifts for kids and computer table accessories. It's a great little standby that exists in our very own delightful Regent Retail Park, and is a great place to pop in if that essential cable, scart lead or something else electronic isn't available in your average supermarket. The staff are particularly helpful, as I've demonstrated, and the shop is laid out simply and cleanly, making it easy to navigate. As for those experts in the back, well, I do wonder why they keep them there. Perhaps there's a fine line between flash sales assistant and fully-fledged nerd in the world of Maplin (see also, Apple Stores)...
