I got my hair cut at Curltopia at the end of July, two days before moving out of state. I've been natural for 5+ years and it was my first deva-inspired cut. I paid the $25 deposit over the phone and my cut (by a single certified stylist) came out to be $69 with tip included.
The cut wasn't what I expected. I thought it was going to be curl by curl as described, but my hair was cut off in chunks... some of it was curl by curl.
It was cute-ish when I left the salon, but when I washed it the next day (day before moving), I realized that I had A LOT of long hair in my head. I went from arm pit length (APL) stretched, to above the shoulder stretched. I had APL hair all over, mixed with short hair, and some VERY short hair (maybe 1.5 inches stretched) in random places...
I was NOT pleased. I put product in it and ended up with a halo of frizz. More frizz than I've ever had. I called the salon to inform them and ask what to do. Trisha, the owner (beware of this woman...), told me I could come in and they would fix it. She and my stylist knew I was moving the next day as I told them while I was there (out of excitement), and told them again on the phone. I didn't have time to drive an hour to get to the salon, get my hair fixed, and an hour back, and pack, etc. to leave the next morning.
I asked if they would be willing to give me a refund so I could get it fixed after I moved. That was a bold move on my part, but my hair was awful, the frizz was unbelievable, and I'm on a teacher's salary... Trisha said she'd think about it and call me back. (Don't believe the woman when she says she'll "call you back.")
I called the salon every day they were open for a week and a half to try to get in contact with Trisha. I spoke with my stylist and asked if he would be willing to just keep the deposit (as if I had missed my appointment) and if I could get the rest back. He thought it would be fair.
Once I FINALLY got in touch with Trisha (a week and a half later, and after moving), I informed her that I had been trying to reach her and was expecting to hear back from her. She, with a nasty tone in her voice, told me: "I know because I am not going to give you a refund. We tried to get you in here to fix it, but you were unwilling to come in because you were moving. It is not our problem. We will not refund your money." (Was I really unwilling or unable...??)
I told her that my stylist and I agreed upon something we both felt was fair and her response: "He does not own this salon, I do. I am not giving you a refund. You sat in his chair and had opportunities to come back and get it fixed but you could not fit us in to your schedule." I told her that I understood her policy but I was not going to change my move to make ANOTHER appointment to get my hair fixed because of mistakes they made. Then, SHE HUNG UP ON ME!
I wouldn't recommend Curltopia to ANYONE due to the level of unprofessionalism of the owner. Had she been more professional and kind about it, and maybe apologized for my experience at least once, I would be much more understanding. But to have a tone with me on the phone and then HANG UP...whoa. That warrants some publicity, and a candid review.
Do NOT go here. Save your time, your hair, your sanity, and YOUR MONEY. I wouldn't even want to go back and have them "fix" it.
Thankfully, I found a natural salon in my new city that was willing to work with me and fix my hair for a reasonable price. The stylist couldn't believe the choppy mess the curltopia cut left me with. read more
