To be honest, I was getting close to giving up on my curls. My hair is naturally curly, and over the years I've tried everything--creams, gels, routines, you name it--just trying to get them to look the way I wanted. I had also been very specific with stylists in the past about cutting my hair to cater to my curls... and still, no one ever got it right. That all changed when I was referred to Curltopia for a DevaCut. My visit was truly life-changing. My stylist was Cheyenne (she goes by Chy), and she was absolutely amazing. She took the time to explain everything--from the products I should be using, to how to style my hair day-to-day, how to sleep with it, and how to actually maintain healthy curls. The level of detail and care she put into my hair was something I had never experienced before. I was in the salon for about two hours and received the DevaCut along with the steam and hydration service. I didn't realize how much intention and technique went into properly caring for curly hair until this visit. When we were wrapping up, I honestly didn't recognize myself--in the best way. I had never seen this level of definition. I had never seen my curls frame my face so beautifully. It was emotional. Who would've thought I would finally learn how to style my curls at 35? There was a slight miscommunication with my check in but as soon as it was discovered, I was taken to the back to start my services. I throughly enjoyed my visit and my hair once the style was complete. My wash/condition was just what I needed. My head felt throughly washed and massaged, it was a devine experience. I left with a list of hair products that were used in my hair and instructions on how to maintain the style. Cheyanna was very nice and welcoming. I went in for a trim. I literally booked the appointment after midnight and came in as the last appointment for my requested stylist that day. It was easy to book on the website, but I don't like the fact that you are not provided the total cost for the service you are requesting prior to the appt. It only requires a down payment. GPS directions were accurate. Signage was perfectly visible, and the salon was very clean. Afro beats was playing and occasionally the playlist ran into some hard hip hop and it was immediately switched back to Afro beats. When I got there, I was immediately seated at 4 PM, my appointment time. Nova, my stylist, was very warm and friendly and explained the difference between finger styling and finger coiling. She entertained pictures from me of what my hair was and what it is now to give her some perspective since I was a first time client. She also gifted me with a complementary service! Since I'm a lazy natural, she took the time to explain products and styling options for me and then told me to get on a trim schedule. I was in and out in about an hour and a half and I enjoyed my experience. The price was more than I wanted to pay, $100 for a wash and trim but it always helps when you have a great experience. I saw the bad reviews on yelp after my appointment. Wow! I don't think I would've come if I had read those reviews first. I have been to Curltopia in the past. The first time I went I wanted bangs and my hair to be colored blonde and it turned out well so I thought I should go to them again. On August 17th I had an appointment scheduled to have my hair re- colored blonde with Nova. At the end of my appointment my hair was pulled back into a low bun by the stylist before I left. It wasn't as toned as I wanted it to be but from past experience I knew the underside was sometimes a little different from the blonde when my hair was down. When I got home and rinsed out the color conditioner treatment. I saw that my hair was 3 different colors which was not as visible in the salon before I left. While I was told I could come back and get my hair toned further if I wasn't satisfied, I did not expect for the color difference to be this extreme. In addition to that, when I looked at the back of my head, I could still see that much of my roots had not been bleach AT ALL and was still dark brown. I ended up paying $132 even though I was quoted $80. Technically, I didn't receive the service that I requested because my hair wasn't even fully bleached. I called when I got home and no one answered so I left a voicemail stating my issues and asking for a refund. No one answered so I called the next day and asked for a refund and they said that they could not give me one because the service was completed when in actuality it was not. It was our first time coming here and we LOVE it!! When I say we, I mean my boyfriend and I. We were trying to get out and do something different and get our hair finally done. I meant to come to them pre-pandemic, but I just never got around to it. Now after coming here I definitely will be coming back! I'm sure my boyfriend will be back as well. They do require masks in the place and they are LGBTQ ‍ friendly . I mention that because on their website where you schedule an appointment they ask if you identify as something other than traditional male or female, which leads me to believe they are very much a forward thinking salon. Love them so much! I will also say it was refreshing seeing non-black people in the salon whether it was a customer or those who work there. That's SUPER uncommon in Georgia. It definitely is for anyone who has curls. So refreshing! The person that took care of me was Dana, and she was so precious!! I have debated over writing a review for the last few days, but I think people should know that this salon is employing a stylist who does not know how to cut curly hair. I only wanted bangs, a shape up, and a bit more definition. I got the bangs and definition, but the shape up turned into the worst cut I have ever had. When I went home and saw I had dead hair hanging off the ends and my hair felt like straw I decided to rinse it and re-moisturize, that is when I discovered that my hair had been cut in all different lengths. I had sections all over my head in which 1 curl would be 10 inches another would be 6 and another would be 4, all right next to each other. This resulted in scraggly looking ends that was near impossible to hide. Fortunately I was able to call a family member to fix my hair so it was suitable to go out in public, but now my back length hair is almost a pixie cut. I will never go here again, and I will advise friends and family to avoid it. read more

Over the course of 8 years the shop has declined dramatically. Ownership changed. Amazing stylist have all made an exodus. It's really sad because this shop was the "go to" place for natural, kinky and curly hair. From a Miss Jessie's, to Design Essentials to the Deva cut themes have all been disruptive and not strategic moves. The climate of natural hair care is very competitive and Curltopia has lost their edge. Poor client service. Mismanagement. Bad scheduling. Decor is stale. Magazines from over 5-10 years old. No TVs. this haircut is nothing close to what I have asked for. I've been to curltopia 3 times and have never left so distraught. I WALKED IN LOOKING BETTER THAN LEAVING. I tried to give the cut the benefit of the doubt but after styling it on my own it's just as horrible.The customer service was horrible as I schedule for 2:30 and got in the chair about 45 MINUTES LATER! And after being in that chair my cut lasted less than 5 minutes and it is choppy and horrendous. DO BETTER for a service that is $100 plus tips I expect more. My original stylist did a rod set on me that was extremely frizzy, so I returned the next day for a redo with another stylist and while they style was better it still was not what I'm used to, and I still wasn't satisfied. These stylists are not really skilled in doing natural hair, they should stick to doing DevaCuts which seem to be their sweet spot. This is not the Curltopia of old... in its hay day this was where natural/curly girls went for great products and natural styles. Went in for a simple straight back flat twist that cost a disgusting 80 bucks. Had to remind the stylist to use barbacide before combing my hair with the tools she just used on a previous client. Why is there a community barbacide for the whole salon??????? Flat twist were liken to that done by a kitchen beautician and not a professional. I'm happy with my haircut from Curltopia, but am only giving it 3 stars due to unprofessionalism. Today was my first time there and I had booked their first appointment of the day for 10:00am. I arrived exactly at 10:00am and was seated by the receptionist. 10 minutes later the receptionist told me my stylist was running late, but would be there soon. At 10:20am my stylist finally comes in. During my haircut, my stylist told me that the reason she was late was because she was eating breakfast in her car and didn't realize I was inside. She told me she had texted the receptionist to ask if I was there and that the receptionist didn't respond. Still, this is no excuse, it's normal to assume a client will be on time for their appointment. Needless to say this was a huge turnoff and I won't be returning to the establishment. read more

I have a short-ish tapered curly cut and went in for a wash and finger style. Told my stylist that I needed a trim but could book that another time. She assured me she could clean it up so I agreed. I told her I loved my shape and to keep it the same. Unfortunately, once I got home, I was able to see that the cut is EXTREMELY uneven (beyond what you'd naturally expect from a curly cut) and there are several gaps/holes in the contour of my hair bc is just so inexplicably short in some spots. I'm writing this just 24h after my visit and my hair is a frizzy mess, it retained no definitional at all...and now the shape looks more like a high top fade than a smooth gradual taper cut like it was before. Mera was very nice and extremely warm; we had a great convo! And I'm sure she has her hair specialty that she's great at. However, curly cutting is obviously not her strong suit and I really wish she would have been up front about that, or not offered to cut at all. read more

I hadn't been to a solo since I was kid and was really excited to treat myself for my birthday. I've had natural hair for 8 years or so and wanted to take the dive to getting my hair dyed a dark purple and deva cut. I love the color still and my stylist was so sweet. She even did a complimentary soft press all in a limited time frame. My main criticism is the lack of educating support. I never bleached my hair or dyed it and clearly expressed so. It would have been helpful to educate me on products and hair care. Instead I had to research on my own when I got home... The Science of Black Hair is a fantastic resource. AND THEY LIED ON MY GOOGLE REVIEW Waited OVER AN HOUR to get seated because they opened the shop late and did not have the courtesy to let their customers know ahead of time. Hair washed by receptionist instead of service provider I AM PAYING FOR because another one of her clients came in 20 mins into doing my hair, which I let go at first but then they OVERCHARGED me!! Mind you, I booked the appointment online and paid a deposit of around $30 to secure it and received an email receipt that the remaining balance will be $87, when I presented this at checkout they said that it was a "system error" and that it's really a remainder of $112. They didnt honor what their website and email said at the time of my booking. No discount for how long I had to wait to get my hair done, I was in the shop from 2:30 to 6:00 pm when the service was only supposed to take 1 hour and 30 mins. And on top of that I ended up missing my university course at 6:00 pm because of this delay... hair turned out nice though so i guess that's one good thing out of this experience. But wouldn't go back due to poor customer service. Then they replied to my google review LYING! They said I got there at 2:40 which is a LIE, I got there at 2:30 PM i have phone call receipts to show for that. They said I immediately got my hair washed, lie again because if i'm getting a Deva cut you have to cut my hair dry... so how would i have immediately got it washed???? Ok, so I used to frequent Curltopia based on the reviews before I moved to Atlanta. The salon does cater to curly girls and my stylist is a very nice girl. However, the products used are NOT good for your hair! If I come in with dry hair, don't give a product that has mineral oil in it!!! The atmosphere is nice and the location is great. This place is good for some, but I have just found a great stylist at Curlie Girlz Rock, so that's an alternative for anyone not as pleased with Curltopia. Also, it's not very fair to ask people to leave reviews on several sites in order to get free hydration services, but hey, it's business and that's how you market. I will say that it's nice that they do prescriptions of what they think your hair needs, but please take the harmful products out of the prescriptions. Two years later and I am now a regular at Curltopia. I tried going somewhere else for color once and it didn't compare. I've found someone who does my color perfectly. I get asked about my color at least once a week, so I think that speaks volumes. It's still expensive, however, so I ONLY get color. No styling for me. But the color is worth my loyalty. read more

I have to say that Rebecca is a great stylist because she takes the customer desires into consideration before she starts on the work. I was a little nervous because since I had visited Curltopia in the distant past, I could only assume that nothing had really changed until after I plopped down on the waiting room couch to do my Yelp check in. It was then that I read the previous customer reviews which were highly unfavorable, but what could I do, I felt stuck. I wanted to turn in my heels and escape because eerily my experience was looking similar to the warnings of those prior Yelpers' comments. My eyes darted nervously to and fro because I had no idea which of these stylists would do my hair... Ok, enough of my dramatics... Here is the down and dirty. 1. I appreciate the aesthetics of Curltopia. There are two spaces for guests to sit comfortable; however, it would be great to get a warmer welcome as a newbie. 2. Although, I love the outcome of my hair style, I do not love the $90 price tag of a simple wash and two strand twist into an up do. That is highly exorbitant thus the minus star. I am all for supporting black business however this place is the reason why sometimes you don't want to support black business. My sister went here for a SIMPLE faux hawk natural hair cut. She showed the picture to the alleged stylist. She cut she hair and then for th sides she sent her to the barber next door because she could not take the sides of the faux hawk down herself. Again my sister showed the picture and the barber only cut the sides and not the back. She went back to the stylist and explained to her that this does not match the picture she gave her. She then asked the stylist to blow dry her hair and flat twist it. The stylist went in the back. My sister waited and waited and the stylist never came back. This alleged stylist and barber completely messed up my sister's hair! If the stylist did not know how to execute the hairstyle she should have said so. Prior to going there she booked her appointment with a master stylist. If this is their idea of a master stylist they do not need to be in business at all. Not only was the skill level atrocious!!! But the lack of professionalism utterly deplorable. The stylist DID NOT listen to her client, she went in the back for over 35 mins and never came back out. I am not sure if anyone has ever experienced how devastating a bad hair cut will make you feel. I would never want anyone to feel the way my sister felt after leaving this alleged salon. I'd been eyeing this salon for almost a year. I'v been cautious of going to a new salon because you never know what will come of it. Despite my hesitation I called to make an appt and spend the $75 because I thought it'd be worth the money. After all this was a deva curl certified salon, and after braids my hair needed a treatment and my fro needed to be shaped nicely. I wanted to go to a salon that knew natural hair and could guide me on how to care for my hair. I didn't think this would be a salon that was just out for your money, but it was. I called explaining that I was a new client and I didn't know what I needed. After discussing my hair type and condition of with the receptionist she booked me with what she said, was a stylist that specifically specialized in my hair type and would give me the best treatment. That was far from the truth. I found out once I got to the salon that my stylist did not specialize in my hair type. Was very inexperienced and trying to gain clientele and that's why I was booked with her. I left the salon with very hard and crunchy finger coils that did not fit my hair type. There was way to much product in my hair and I did not get a cut at all. The stylist snipped a few ends here and there. I had to come home, wash my hair again, and clip my own ends. I am extremely disappointed bc this salon is not what it advertises and does not have your best interest at heart. I was ripped off and no one cared. I specifically picked this salon bc they were deva curl certified and I later found out that my stylist was far from deva curl certified. I will say that the stylist tried her best and she was sweet. But to the salon, if your stylist aren't well prepared and educated or deva certified you shouldn't claim this on your website. I regret I ever came across this salon. Word of advice, research your stylist if you decide to go. Otherwise, stay away. At this point I'm afraid to try another natural salon. Ive heard CurlEnvy was worth a try with reputable stylist. I've been getting the deva cut for years but it seems like curltopia keeps going up in price. I'm Caucasian with naturally curly hair so a good cut is everything. The last 4-5 times I've gone here I just don't feel like I'm getting my money's worth anymore. I also don't feel like they give the same personalized attention like they used to. I've started to go to the local beauty school and specifically ask for someone who is familiar with the deva cutting technique. I still get a good cut and lots of personal attention for about 1/5th the price. read more

I gave them two chances and both times was severely disappointed. I initially visited in Dec 2020 and chose Alexia. Very sweet girl but she did NOT understand how curls work and actually cut defined layers into my hair so I was unable to straighten it without looking stupid. Ok, so I wanted to try again and booked with Latasha in April. Was really looking forward to the visit and got THREE notices to confirm my appt for Sunday at 1, and I confirmed all. I got there early, no problem, I don't mind waiting but then 20 mins past my appt, I go to ask what's taking so long. Girl at the desk says oh I'm sure she'll only be another 5 minutes and I look over and see what Latasha is doing will NOT take just 5 mins so I ask the receptionist to go ask her. She comes back and says not only does she have the person in the chair but she has someone under the hair dryer that she has to see. So of course I walk out. Seriously, you know curly hair so why would you schedule appts on top of each other like that? If someone comes in late, you tell them I'm sorry but I can't spend as much time on you as you might like because I can't delay the people after you that will be on time. The first thing one might notice about this salon is that everything about it is professional and crisp - particularly when compared to many other salons. I called and made an appointment very easily - the person who I spoke to was pleasant, polished, and professional. When I arrived for my appointment, I was greeted quickly by my stylist and she started working on me right away (so pretty much no waiting). The salon itself is clean and attractive. All of the equipment appears to be in good working order. They offer you drinks and there are magazines awaiting your perusal should you find yourself under a dryer (as I did). The bathroom was very clean (always a plus). Now for the parts that were a bit neutral/not so great or me... I asked for a trim. I got a full blown haircut. I've waited several days before my review to make sure I thought about this rationally. My stylist was very sweet. I gave her a bit of information as we talked. One, I don't wear my hair curly and I never "big chopped." Over three years ago, I simply stopped getting relaxers. And I did so under the care of a few stylists (the main person I went to relocated and then another stopped working to take care of her kids full-time). So I was getting regular trims and my previous main stylist let me know when I was "all natural." I also let the stylist at Curltopia know that I really wasn't sure what to do with my hair. I usually wear my hair in a bun and that was how it was when I arrived. So I never big chopped. And I wear my hair pulled back. I clearly had heat damage (as I do straighten sometimes) and I needed some help. Hence my visit to Curltopia. So, the stylist I saw at Curltopia gave me a trim. An extreme trim. I can now no longer easily pull my hair back in a bun. It takes a cocktail of barrettes and bobby pins. And that irritates me. I've had many, many trims by stylists since I started transitioning and I had two great stylists (the one that moved and the one that became a full-time mom). They were able to successfully trim and style my hair (I would get a lot of compliments on their work) without making me feel like I lost too much hair. Black women being "afraid" of haircuts is not new (so I don't understand why my stylist did not exercise more caution when cutting my hair). And I am typically fine with a trim and it has been YEARS since I've had an issue with a haircut. So, overall, my stylist cut off way too much. And if she felt she needed to, she never told me why or gave me a "heads up" before she started cutting. She didn't give me an explanation like,"Your hair is soooo damaged, I'll need to take off a lot. Is that okay?" Sometimes it's all about setting expectations. I've had stylists who would communicate with me, BEFORE CUTTING, how much they were going to take off (particularly if it would be a lot). This stylist did not do this. She cut. Too much. And she could have communicated with me more before she started cutting. That is not too much to ask given how much you pay for services at Curltopia. So I'm a bit frustrated, because when my hair is not straightened, it's hard for me to figure out what to do with it now since it's so short. It is much harder to deal with now, given how short it was cut at Curltopia. I am a runner. And I work a lot. So I'm pressed for time when I'm trying to figure out how to deal with my hair. Ain't nobody got time for putting in loads of gel, bobby pins, and barrettes to keep hair smooth and laying down. All that aside, when I left Curltopia, I was pleased with how my hair looked. I had the rod set - and the set was a good one. Also know that even with no waiting, if you get your hair set, you might be in there a while. My appointment was at 8:30 am. I left just before 2 pm. That is not really anyone's fault, but it would have been nice to have been reminded, as the stylist and I were discussing options, that if I chose a style that would require me to be under a dryer, it might take a long time to dry. The other thing I'll say is this... while my hair was cut too much, it was a very solid cut. The woman who cut my hair is skilled. But it was just cut too much. I MIGHT return to Curltopia, but if I do, I will see a different stylist. Another friend goes to Curltopia and recommended her stylist, so I might just try someone new. If you go here, just make sure you communicate your desires and ask questions before things like cutting begin. Be extra cautious. I won't say my stylist's name, because she was a good stylist. I was really disappointed with my experience at Curltopia. My stylist was Jackie. Plus: They took me last minute. The ambiance is nice and clean. Negative: I have 4c hair, therefore, when I comb through my hair I start from the tip and work my way to the root to prevent breakage (I thought this was common knowledge in the natural hair world). The stylist combed through my from the root to tip, which is a BIG NO-NO. Even after I told her to comb from the tips to root, she responded "I'm detangling your hair" and continued combing very aggressively. At that point I should have gotten up! I requested a twist out. During this process, she sprayed my hair to re-wet. On many occasions, she sprayed my face without apologizing or recognizing the fact that she did this! Lastly, never once did she come to check to see if I was ok when I was under the dryer. I paid $70 for the style and left completely disappointed/deflated from the experience. The worst part is the style didn't even last (which was my number 1 request upon sitting in her chair). I will never go back to this salon and I would highly recommend against using Jackie. read more

Very rude salon. STAY AWAY!!! Traveled out of state to get a "curl certified expert" to cut, color and style my hair. After waiting over 30 mins after my appointment time without even being greeted warmly the "curly hair" expert told me she was ready for me. She asked me what I wanted but didn't provide curly hair technical knowledge I was hoping to get. She then told me I had to go sit back down because she was still styling another client?!?!? After another 15 mins of waiting I finally left. I'm shocked at the treatment I received given the cut and style of curly hair is very expensive. Looking around the salon there were about 4 other people waiting about as long as I was!!! This salon charges you for a no show appointment but is not respecting the patrons time. I did get a call back with an apology and saying I would get a discount if I came back but it's too little too late. What a horrible way to absolutely ruin a Mother's Day gift!!!! read more

Let me preface this review by saying that my mane is not 100% natural, so feel free to take my review with a grain of salt. After doing some research on the natural hair salons in Atlanta, I decided on Curltopia to get a hair assessment during my trip to the ATL. I booked an appointment with Tas, hoping he could give me some tips on how to care for my recently transitioned hair. I was greeted by his assistant, who asked some basic questions about my hair, what I use between salon visits, etc. Then Tas came over and shampooed my hair. Much to my dismay, he told me that my hair's natural curl pattern had been damaged by my constant use of the flat iron. As a result, I would either have to do the big chop or restart the transition process over without the use of heat. He was very honest and straightforward, which I appreciated. However, I had hoped to get a non-heat style given his advice, but he didn't have time to do it. The receptionist who booked my appointment did not inform me of this when I called to schedule, so I was a little miffed that in the end, I had to return to the flat-iron--the very thing that was keeping me from wearing my hair in its truly natural state. To make matters worse, I wasn't too happy with the outcome. I thought Tas had the flat iron way too hot, and my hair smelled more like the flat iron than the shampoo when he was done. In the end, I received my hair "prescription." The products he selected for me totaled well over $100, but to my knowledge, Tas did not use any of the products on my hair. I had no idea how to use them or how he arrived at the decision that those products were the best for my hair type. It just seemed like a haphazard list of stuff, so I didn't bother to buy anything. In the end, I wish I'd just gone to my regular stylist who I used previously during my short stint in Atlanta. She would have charged me much less for the shampoo, conditioner and flat iron service, and my hair would have looked and smelled a lot better. All the same, if you're truly natural, definitely check this place out. All the natural clients looked great after their services. read more

The service is professional and courteous, plus cute! Ms. Kay greeted me with a warm smile as I walked in. The staff was consistent with the graciousness as well. My colorist/stylist is beyond words...Ms. Dana Miller is definitely a colorist that is knowledgeable, creative and who listens well. She is on point and the best colorist I've ever had to color my hair. I'm natural and I wanted hi/lites and lo/lites and SHAZAM!!! I love my dang color and it's not only befitting w/my style, but it's BITCHIN' too!!! Need a great salon, not ghetto or boujee beyond kindness and great service ...go to CURLTOPIA!
