I made an appt and requested a stylist who: A) Was patient with kids and B) Had experience with problems resulting from tangling, dryness and knots. My kid had started swimming some months ago and her hair had become increasing more problematic. (Later realized that the swimmers shampoo was drying it out). I EXPLAINED the condition of her hair BEFORE driving the 45 min to get there. I was referred to Jay. I called back THREE times expressing my concern that being a Junior-level may not give her the experience needed. I ASKED FOR ALIAH, to whom I had spoken to previously and who had previously examined my child's hair and recommended Miss Jessie's (which didn't work, I guess bcz of the swimmer's poo). Upon arriving, Jay examined my kid's hair, I told her my concerns and she said that an extra conditioning would be needed. She WET my child's hair AND put a conditioner in it, BEFORE walking around conferring with staff members, prompting one to even examine my kid's now WET hair. She NEVER told me the problem on her on, I had to ask if everything was alright. She then starts asking me about whether I discussed the price of service. I told her "Yep, sure did." I was quoted the standard rate for a Junior stylist. She told me that there'd be no way she could do it for less than, $150!! Right there ON THE SPOT, with my child's hair WET. Which is exactly what I said. THEY DID NOT DO ANYTHING TO REMEDY THE SITUATION. They did not budge on the price as a one-time courtesy for THEIR error. I TOLD them that I SAID I wanted Aliah (whom CONFIRMED was a Master Stylist) but they insisted that she knew what she was doing. Jay goes on to say that she didn't know what price they quoted me (so I drove 45min to LIE about this???). She said that the bad thing is that they can't see a person's hair BEFORE coming in (making excuses). I replied---"Isn't that what your CONSULTATION is for????" Her reply "Well, yes. I should've said this before I started doing her hair." But again, did NOT REMEDY THE SITUATION. She even informed me that she didn't think that anyone would do my child's hair for less. I informed her that she was wrong (interestingly enough, I took her back to the Dominican salon where they did it for $50) I chose to tip her stylist highly for the service. I told Jay that I was looking for a salon to take her to weekly, instead of the Dominican salon she goes to because I wanted her to wear her curls. So to extort $150 by STARTING A SERVICE then trippling the price, instead of simply being honest, they lost out on $$ on a regular basis. I gladly would have paid $80/wk. I wound up having to leave with my child's hair WET and under a plastic cap. Oh BTW-- The Domincan stylist was infuriated about the wet hair and conditioner used in my child's hair. She said it made her hair MORE tangled and should have been combed out while dry. It therefore, took EIGHT HOURS to do her hair. I will NEVER go there again. read more

I will go ahead and give you the bottom line up front, I love the salon, and I love my new stylist Maxine. I got a consult, deep condition and trim. I waited a few days to post my review so that I could also comment on the recommended products when I used them myself at home... Because I am all too familiar with something being used in my hair in the salon and being awesome and at home being a disaster... First of all, I decided to try out Curltopia based on reviews on here as well as a fellow curly... I give them 5 stars for 5 reasons, the 1st star is given because they fitted me in on a whim, I got off work a little earlier than usual and gave them a call and drove right over! Love it! The 2nd star is for Maxine, who instantly assessed my hair and told me what was wrong with the products I was using and why I did not like the results I was getting. She also answered every question I had with facts to explain why certain things worked and others didn't... She taught me a ton about my hair, and not only educated me, but also taught me to embrace my kinks. Another thing I loved about her was she wasn't a stylist who turned every question into a 'why you should come see me weekly' response, she gave me valuable home use tips that worked with the products I took home! The 3rd star is because the products they use in your hair are available for purchase, and Maxine took time to explain each product she was using and why. And when a leave in didn't react well with a moisturizer, she explained why it didn't react well together, and what products look like in my hair when they don't react well together (and all this time I thought it just needed time to 'soak in'). The 4th star is for the environment, it is very cute, very hip, laid back salon with free wifi! My 5th star goes to the amazing receptionist who was all too accommodating and the opposite of pushy, I love the fact that no one pressured me to buy anything on the list of recommended products! (Even tho I am a self proclaimed PJ, and I did buy all of the products and loved them all as well) Needless to say, my next appt was set up before I left! read more

Living the NATURAL life and so happy! Over the last three months, I have been in the process of transition from my shoulder-length straight/relaxed hair style to my new natural low-cut and finally made my dream a reality on Friday, June 10! I made the decision to cut off my hair in March 2011. In April 2011, I went to my normal hair salon I had been going to for over 8 years and I was told I needed to wait 6 months before cutting off my hair. I left not happy and not waiting 6 months. That day, I decided not to put any more heat in my hair and get ready for my new look. After two months, I said, I am ready and did not want to wait any longer, so I scheduled an appointment for the BIG CHOP at my old salon. The next day, I canceled my appointment with my old salon and scheduled one with Curltopia. The stylist that was available during my ideal time was Giselle. When I arrived to Curltopia, I walked into a vibrant yet relaxed environment. After completing my new client information card, I was approached by the shampoo technician Mellissa who was very pleasant and excited for me to be doing the Big Chop today. After my first wash, Giselle came over and introduced herself to me and told me what to expect over the next hour or so. After meeting Giselle and seeing her style and hearing her comforting voice, I was relaxed and ready for the next phase in my life as a Natural Beauty! After my cut and hydration, while finger styling my hair, Giselle walked me through my hair type, what I needed to do to maintain my look at home and wrote out my hair plan so I would be knowledgeable about my own hair and how to maintain it. I've always been extraordinarily picky about almost everything in my life...and my hair is no exception to this rule- especially since my transition from chemicals to natural. I was natural for 2.5 years before I decided to wear my hair curly. I'd look at other women's curls and be like "Ugh! Why won't my hair curl up like that!"? One day, I decided to stop whining and ask one of those women how they accomplish those wonderful, ethereal looking curls. She then told me that I should go to Curltopia. She spoke about it as if it was a dream... Me being me- I still had apprehensions. It took me 7 months to make a decision. I bit the bullet and went. A junior stylist did my hair. She washed me, deep conditioned me and EDUCATED me on how to do it myself the proper way. Then she brought out the scissors...As she began cutting it- I silently freaked out. I never had that much of my hair cut! But I just kept silent and let her do her thing. I told her that I trusted her before we began the process- so I couldn't take it back. She explained to me (as she was cutting) what she was doing while she did it. This eased my nerves. She finished, I went to the dryer for a few minutes and came back to her chair. She did a few more things to my hair to finish it up. After she completed everything, I looked in the mirror.... I was completely stunned at what I saw. Quite frankly, I didn't know my hair could look like that!? It was so beautiful. It had shape, body and luster. I purchased the products that she used on me and they've been amazing! They've lasted me for 6 months and I am forever loyal to those brands now. I am a Curltopia advocate and I highly recommend it for EVERYONE. Atmosphere: The first thing I noticed about this salon was how clean and professional it was! It was simply fantastic to go and get my happy naps handled in such a relaxed yet fun atmosphere. I was offered a drink several times during my visit and was definitely kept comfortable. Another thing I noticed about Curtlopia was the bathroom. I have never been to a salon with a bathroom that I dreaded using. The bathroom at Curltopia was nice and clean with nice smelling soaps and real toilet paper! I know, not about hair, but these things matter when you're getting your hair done, in my opinion. Hair: Giselle did my hair and she is simply amazing! I have had natural hair for 13 years, but I honestly had no idea how to take care of it - I would just buy different products and see what would happen. Giselle first explained my hair type to me (4b/c) and explained the things that my hair needs to be healthy (moisture, moisture, moisture) and then she explained to me the products that would help me achieve this. She first cut my hair down (I figured a big chop was in order) at my request - I wanted to start over being a happy nappy head. She talked to me as she worked and wrote down all the instructions that I needed to handle my own hair. I got my hair done two weeks ago and her suggestions are working! Now I will say that there is one product that I have yet to buy, but some of the products were expensive, but so far, the ones I got are definitely working! Afterwards: I have received several comments on my hair and it is soft and very hydrated! Even though this salon is 20 miles away from my house, I will definitely be returning and once my daughter is old enough to sit still for longer than 10 minutes, I will take her to see Giselle as well! This was my first visit to Curltopia was a very pleasant experience! I arrived and was greeted by a welcoming space and courteous staff. I did not wait long; Giselle came out and introduced herself. We went to her station and had a brief consultation about my goals for my hair and my expectations of this visit. Giselle was very patient and thorough in her explanations, which put me at ease. I can always appreciate someone talking with me about what I want for my hair before proceeding to do anything to it. I have been natural for about 10 years, though I have only been wearing natural styles regularly for about 2.5 yrs. I had become tired of doing twist sets every week and feeling that I was losing so much hair in the process. Needless to say, I was looking for a something new! Well I found it...Giselle talked me into cutting my ends that were causing so much shedding during washes & my style of choice..COIL OUT (which was new to me). I liked the style and it allowed me to go about 2wks before I had to restyle which was a nice break. My bill was more than double of what I planned when making the appointment. I am just a firm believer that if natural hair needs hydration and the salon subscribes to this belief then hydration treatments should be included into the price of the hair style (which is more than ample). I don't like having to choose between what a stylist views as necessary hair health & finances. Giselle did a great job! She really knows & enjoys natural hair and was very engaging. I liked that she wrote up a maintenance plan for me to do between visits which will be a lot because I can't pay this every two weeks or even once a month. Okay, so I did the "big chop" yesterday @ Curltopia. It is not like my hair was down to my rear end, but I am still in a bit of shock. Am I happy with the service,the stylist and the education received there? Yes! I am still waiting for my hair to grow on me though (literally). I discovered that my hair grade (type), took well to Miss Jessie's curly pudding. (This stuff is like a great modern day curl activator). At Curltopia they educate you about what products to use to maintain your style, and what works best on your hair. I know you think you can get it all from You tube, but I recommend you let the professionals guide you through this journey. My first visit there a weeks ago, I thought my hair was natural and ready to be styled as such. I hadn't had a relaxer in about 2 years. I had african style braids and sewn in weaves. I still had flat iron damage, and about a year ago I tried a dominican texturizer which was still lingering on my ends. Stacey did a flat twist to help transition my hair. The style was great but after two weeks I had to return to sit under the dryer for hours again just to have a transition style. I walked in yesterday in the impatient mood and requested the "big chop". So here I am today with a bit of a frizzy fro playing with products prescribed by my stylist. I am excited of what the end result will be on this new journey and I have no regrets. I am grateful to Stacey and Curltopia for taking such good care of me! I recently, spontaneously did the Big Chop myself and noticed that my hair was extremely dry. After reading all of the great reviews, I spontaneously (again) decided to call Curltopia, Friday 3/18 and try to get a same day appointment (Though I would not recommend this if you really want an appointment, it took two hours for me to luck up and I had 25 minutes to get there!). The receptionist was very nice and accommodating. She took my number and called me back after they had a client to cancel. Yay for me! The salon is very relaxing and stylish. My stylist was Giselle and she is GREAT! Throughout the process, she explain what she was doing and the products she was using. As I sat under the steamer and the dryer several people came by to offer my beverages (water, coffee, tea, etc). I told Giselle that I had BC'ed myself (though she knew something wasn't right as she was assessing my hair!) so she trimmed and shaped my hair nicely. My hair is very thick and kinky, coily. She knew the right styling products to apply and added some structure to my TWA. Giselle also wrote down a list of products to use on my hair, Including the ones that she used and also several others that would be good for my hair type. She was very personable and suggested products that my be useful for my daughter's hair as well. I was not pressured into buying the hair products at all. She just gave me the list. When I went to check out, I did want to purchase some of the products Giselle listed and she came over to help me find them. FINALLY! I have been here in the Marietta area since Sept 2010 and after visiting 4 other salons, I finally found my new hair care home. I decided to go natural upon moving here from CO and had started to get discouraged and ready to go back to relaxed hair until I finally came across Curltopia while doing a internet search. The salon is in a nice location and the atmosphere was very nice, clean and fresh. I went in and met with Giselle and was very please and excited after my initial consultation and I was already confident she would do a great job when I went back for my appointment. There was something different about her consultation that made me KNOW that she was going to do my hair the way I wanted. I went back yesterday for my appointment and she HOOKED ME UP! I LOVE MY COMB COILS Twist Out. I have attempted to get this look from Kinks and Deeply Rooted Salon (who told me my hair was not long enough, yet Giselle did great coils even after a trim and Rozays Salon from where I walked out looking a mess) Giselle did great coils, twisted them out and took the time to style them. I have gotten so many compliments already while out running errands after my appointment. My husband and kids also love the style. Giselle took the time to explain to me my hair texture in so much detail. She gave me product recommendations for my hair that were very reasonably priced. I had been researching natural hair salons and came across Curltopia's website. Off the bat, I found their site to be informative and encouraging to a newly natural like myself. I called and booked the next available appointment. I arrived, on time, and was greeted immediately and offered a beverage. The salon is chic and tastefully decorated, with ample seating areas. After a brief wait, I was greeted by my stylist, Brynn, who immediately checked the condition of my hair. She asked me the reason for my visit; what did I want to accomplish with my hair. I wanted my haircut shaped- up, color and information on how to care for my hair, products, etc. She wasn't able to color my hair due to scheduling(color was not on of the services listed under my appt.). Brynn let me know that my hair was dry(which I knew), I had some straight pieces and my curl pattern was being over-run by the dry hair and lack of moisture. She showed me some of the products she was using on my hair and gave me a "hair prescription" detailing what products to use, as well as how and when to use them. Brynn told me why she suggested certain products, for the moisture, and gave me an approximation of how long it could take to restore the moisture in my hair and the subsequent effects. She styled my hair in a way that I didn't think was possible and gave me instructions on how to maintain, daily care and wash day instructions. My hair looked great and felt great. I made my first appointment with Curltopia Salon for "The Big Chop." I was especially grateful to get an appointment a day in advance. I received a reminder phone call two days in advance. When I arrived, I was greeted and had minimal to no wait to get started on my hair. I was a little reluctant, but the staff made me feel comfortable. The shop was clean and neat. I was offered a beverage on several occasions and had all my questions answered. There was even reading material for while I was under the dryer. Everyone was involved in my hair education. It did not matter if I was his/her client or not. When the style was done, I left with a hair prescription (list of products that was used on my hair and how to use them). This was especially helpful so that I would not forget. After that, I thought I would experiment on my own. I was still missing some things evident by the results that I was getting, so I made another appointment. Fast forward 8 months later, I had my second visit. I still received the same excellent customer service, appointment reminder, hair prescription, and had all my questions answered. In my mind I wondered why I ever stopped coming. I am extremely satisfied. Since going back, I have been able to style my hair between visits. I know that I am doing something right because complete strangers have asked questions about my hair. On Sunday May 1, 2011, I attended the Natural Hair Fair in Atlanta, GA where I met some of the staff who works at Curltopia. I was transitioning to natural hair and didn't know what styles that would work for me in addition to having relaxed mixed with the natural. I came upon Curltopia's mini salon that was setup in the middle of the floor. Some of the staff were actually doing sample styles and what I saw interest me. Of course, I joined others who were in line and had a portion of my hair curled with Miss Jessie's products that I fell in love with. On May 5, 2011 I was in the Salon being fully serviced, I decided to cut all of my relaxed hair off. I was excited and comfortable with doing so after sharing that moment with one of the staff members at the Natural Hair Fair. When I arrived at Curltopia for the first time, I felt very welcomed. The receptionist greeted me as soon as I stepped one foot in the door. I was signed in as soon as I arrived and directed to where I would be serviced. I was also offered coffee, water, or tea. The staff made the drink and served it to me as if I were at a spa. My stylist was very informative and made sure I understood each step that she recommended and the reason behind it. My hair was super soft, hydrated, shiny, and full of curls which was the total opposite of how I entered the salon. She also provided a copy as a recap of the process that she performed on my hair and the recommendations. I will definitely go back to Curltopia Salon and recommend individuals as well. Wow! I just left Curltopia today and had to take a moment and write about how very pleased I was with my entire experience. I had an appointment with Giselle. Before I even begin, I want to say that Curltopia is over 30 miles from my house and it was worth every minute that I spent getting there. When I walked into the salon, I was greeted in a friendly and professional manner. Giselle saw me right away. That in itself impressed me as too many salons often over book and that means a long wait time for the customer. Not so here. I had recently removed a weave from my hair and shared with Gisele about my journey to finally enjoy my natural hair after being perm free for 18 months. She listened carefully to my concerns and answered ALL of my questions about my hair, products, how to style etc.... One thing I have to say that I loved was the steamer. A natural friend of mine told me how wonderful that it was and something that I "must do" when I find the right salon. I have to say that the experience was great and put lots of moisture back into my hair. Giselle did a fantastic job caring for my hair and gave me a beautiful two strand twist that brought a smile to my husband's face as soon as he walked in. It looked exactly the way that I wanted it to and told her how excited I was about coming back for my next appointment with her. I did my accidental big chop in February after receiving a horrendous trim from a salon I will not name. After doing some research on natural hair salons in Atlanta, I chose to go to Curltopia in the hopes that they could guide me in the right direction on my natural hair journey. CURLTOPIA EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS! My stylist STACY was a blessing. She washed, trimmed, and finger styled my newly natural hair. The entire time she made sure to talk to me about my hair and educate me on how to maintain healthy hair. She made sure to give me a product list (didn't pressure me to make a product purchase) and natural hair information sheet to take home with me. Before leaving, Stacy informed me that I could call anytime to ask questions (which I did lol) and although I didn't speak to her directly when I called in, the other staff members were very helpful. Stacy got me in and out and I didn't have to spend five hours in the salon! She was a pleasant stylist to be around and made it seem like she loves doing hair. The salon is clean and chic. The staff is very helpful and makes sure you enjoy your experience. They even keep you hydrated while you are under the dryer by bringing you water I was sure to schedule my next appointment before leaving and am confident that I will receive the same experience during my next visit. I went to Curltopia on 5/6/11. I loved how when I walked in the door I was greeted and promptly served.Sara was the receptionist there. My hair stylist (Aliah) was ready to to see my hair. I wasn't offered a beverage, but I believe it was because my stylist was ready for me. I loooove the atmophere and the big mirrors so you can see exactly what the stylist is doing to your hair. I had a lot of damamge to my hair especially in the back of my hair. She really didn't have any answers for me. But, she did suggest that I go to see a Dr. about my hair, as well as take some hair, skin and nail vitiamns to promote growth. I already use Miss Jessie's products so that was not a big shock to me that she used that on my hair. But, I did learn about the products that you have to mix products together so that it will work in my hair.That was information that I did not know. I watched how another stylist worked in the prodcuts on a customer that was getting a finger style and that helped a lot. I was kind of upset at the end of my visit when I went to pay and my total was a lot higher then I had anticipated because I got my split ends cut. I didn't know that this was $45! When my hair stylist suggested to that vs. the hydration treatment I thought it was at most $20. That is the only negative comment I have. Overall,my experience was Great! I went to Curltopia for the first time a week ago. The salon is nice and the people are extremely friendly. My stylist, Giselle, is knowledgeable & patient. She took the time to explain how I could care for my hair at home, which I really appreciated. She was also extremely funny and listened well. Also, I am getting married next year and asked her about natural wedding styles. She offered to teach me how to do several and after sensing my apprehension to do my own hair on such a big day, she offered to be available the day of. I was happy to have found Curltopia because all the other "natural hair salons" seem to only want to straighten your hair. I don't mind straightening my hair sometimes, but I desperately wanted to learn how to make my hair look nice in its kinky-curly/natural state. My thought is, if I wanted to wear my hair straight all the time, I would have just kept my relaxer. My only problem with the salon is that the price for a so-called "trim", which is what I asked for. SO, because I combined several services (i.e., I got a two-strand twists, hydration treatment, and a "trim") I got the "reduced" price for a trim: a whopping $45.00!! Yes, you read that right: $45, and that was with a "discount" for getting more than one service. If I had gotten the trim alone, it would have been $$60, the same price as a cut. This is a bit pricy in my opinion for a trim, but overall, I really like the salon!! I will go back. read more

Curltopia is awesome! The salon is beautiful and the décor is chic and comfortable. I decided to go natural months ago, but was not quite ready for the BC (Big Chop). For some reason I was hesitant to let go of my hair and make such a drastic move, but I knew it was necessary to speed up the process of my natural hair journey. However, when I sat in Giselle's chair, I felt a confidence that I'd never felt before. Giselle was awesome and I really liked the way she broke down each process and explained in detail what I was about to experience with my new natural experience. In just that short period of time, I was educated tremendously about my new journey in being au natural. Ms. Honey and the rest of the staff at Curltopia were great also and they were genuinely concerned with my needs and comfort. They consistently asked if I needed anything. I was very appreciative of the water because sitting under the dryer became hot : ) Giselle did a great job and I was very pleased with how my cut, coil out , and color turned out. She also gave me helpful hints on how to care for my new look at home and gave me a list of personalized products to use and suggestions for my hair care now and for in the near future. Once again, Curltopia to the rescue! I discovered Curltopia a couple of years ago after another "natural" hair salon severly damaged by hair while going through my natural hair transition. Curltopia took me in, nourished and hydrated my hair and got me back on track with healthy, natural hair. Needless to say, I was impressed and my daughter and I rely on Curltopia for our natural hair care needs. My most recent visit, however, absolutely blew my mind! First, it was an emergency appointment. I was scheduled for an interview the next day and my hair was a hot mess! I was in between styles and my color had faded terribly. They got me in for a color, cut and style within a couple of hours of my call. Then, Jordan was the hero in this story. I had never worked with her before and was a bit hesitant about how my hair would turn out for my interview. To my amazement, Jordan knew MY hair. She told ME everything about my hair that I normally have to tell the stylist. I was totally impressed with her knowledge and professionalism. The icing on the cake - my color was perfect, my curls were perfect and I didn't have to be concerned about my "natural curls" during my job interview.
