Absolutely incompetent. I wanted to place a custom cupcake order for a baby shower. Using their online form, I scheduled a phone consultation for a Friday at 2pm. At 2:02pm, I received an email from them saying that I didn't put a phone number on my form. I responded at 2:03pm apologizing and giving them my phone number. I expected they would call within a few minutes. By 2:08pm they still hadn't called, so I emailed asking if they will call soon. At 2:34pm I am still waiting for a call or an email. While I was waiting, I went back to their website to see where I could have missed entering in my phone number for the consultation. I discovered that there isn't a place to enter your phone number for them to call you, only fields for your name, email, info that will help prepare for the meeting, and a field that says "Send text messages to". The note below says "You will opt in to text messages for this event. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out" so it's clearly a field for texts only. I had skipped this since I did not want to opt into texts. I'm still waiting for a response (either phone call or email follow-up--and it's 2:45 now) but it's crickets. Judging by all the other reviews for custom orders at each of their locations, they clearly are terrible at custom orders. Don't waste your time. read more

How much do I love Cupcakin'? Enough to have them at my wedding! Admittedly, it took me awhile to try them when they first opened, but after the first bite...I was sold! After ordering a bunch of mini and regular sized cupcakes for our at-home "tasting" (aka an excuse to buy 15 cupcakes for 2 people) and trying almost every flavor...we decided a second visit was warranted to confirm our choices. Our top picks were salted caramel, chocolate salted caramel, cookies and cream, and lemon cream pie, but we ended up picking key lime pie and chocolate raspberry. Key lime pie has a graham cracker crust, vanilla cake, lime curd, and a whipped cream frosting while chocolate raspberry has a chocolate cookie crust, chocolate cake, raspberry jam filling, and chocolate frosting. The mini cupcakes were a part of our reception dessert spread that featured some of our favorite local dessert shops. They were beautiful, all the guests loved them and the size was perfect! I love how their mini cupcakes aren't dry or overwhelmed with frosting. They're just as delicious as the full sized cupcakes and a great option if you want to try a lot of flavors. I've liked all the flavors I've tried and they're all moist, fluffy, flavorful, and topped with a frosting that perfectly matches the cake. Very nice cupcakes. However, they do not indicate which of the cupcake types contain nuts. Nor do the employees seem to know. If you have a nut allergy, I'd advise not eating anything from this bakery. On my recent visit to the Telegraph location, the employee serving me assured me that only the carrot cake ones had nuts. This turned out not to be true -- the vegan chocolate ones are made with cashews. My daughter ate one and ended up in the ER. The business did not respond to two voicemails that I left about this issue. -- basically, please label them prominently. Listing the ingredients on the website is not sufficient. read more

Yesterday I was reading a Berkeleyside Nosh from a couple of weeks ago that I had missed/ In it was a story of Cupcakin' Bake Shop's opening in the space once occupied by Virginia Bakery. I don't go to bakeries often so I have no particular attachment to Virginia Bakery and little memory of its layout or decor. If I were to rank sweet treats. donuts would be at the bottom and cookies would be at the top, w/ cupcakes coming in second to cookies, so I was intrigued by Cupcakin'. I particularly like the idea of mini cupcakes, because it allows me small bites and the ability to sample many flavors. Today I stopped in. I found parking directly in front. The space is clean and modern looking. You walk in one door, peruse the cupcakes in the case, make your purchase and walk out the other door. There is a touchless hand sanitizer dispenser near the front door. There are a variety of flavors of full size cupcakes. The special this month is snickerdoodle, which has a little snickerdoodle cookie stuck on its edge into the frosting. I used to bake snickerdoodles and love them, but I was on a quest for minis. There were about 6 types, red velvet, double chocolate, vanilla, sea salt caramel, chocolate w/ a crunchy topping on the frosting and key lime. The lovely woman behind the counter told me the names of them all, and repeated them at my request, but I didn't retain all the names. I got one of each and then added the double chocolate, because why not? She put them in a box w/ a holder to keep each one upright and I took them out to my car. As I was walking out of the store I was greeted cheerily by a woman on the sidewalk, who then walked in through the door I had just walked out of. I wondered if she was the owner. When I got home I ate the extra chocolate cupcake w/ my afternoon cup of tea. After dinner I cut the rest of them in half and Alan and I shared them. They were moist, delicious and not too sweet, although the sweetness did add up, probably from the vanilla and sea salt caramel. You could taste the quality of the ingredients. The chocolate ones were my favorites, unsurprisingly, along w/ the red velvet. The key lime was almost like a cheesecake in texture and was excellent. The aggregate was a treat and I can see going there again in a few weeks or months. read more

AVOID!!!! Horrible customer service! I am a cupcake fanatic and have been to Cupcakin on Telegraph and Walnut Creek many times with no issues. For the past year, each time I try to go to this store, it is closed in the afternoon way before the posted shop hours. I was driving by one day and finally saw the shop open, so I went into to get cupcakes. I waited patiently for someone to help me, and no one ever did? I just stood there and kept waiting to see if the 2 worker ladies would acknowledge me. I decided not to say anything and walked out to go to James the Giant where the cupcakes are $1 cheaper anyway, not $4.25 like the ones here. Love at First Bite is also cheaper. Saturday, I was passing by this shop again and decided to give this place a 3rd and final try to purchase a dozen salted caramel cupcakes. There was one customer ahead of me and the cashier was soooo slow and never said a word to me. She could have said " hello, I'll be with you in awhile". Then another lady employee with purple red hair came out from the back and was just standing there the entire time. Once again, I waited for some type of "Can I help you?" and nothing. No eye contact...nothing. In the meantime, a couple more customers came in, and we were all standing there just waiting for the lady with the purple red hair to help us. I finally told the customer in back of me that I was not going to wait there any longer and left. I can't believe this happened to me again at this shop with rude employees. I love love love these cupcakes! I used to frequent the location in Swan's Market in Oakland when I worked in Oakland pre-COVID, but have not been able to go since March 2020. Imagine my delight when I heard Cupcakin' opened a new storefront less than 10 minutes away from my house! My family has gone there three times in the past two weeks. (Yay for birthdays!) My kids' favorites are the Double Chocolate, Cookies n' Cream and Funfetti. My favorites are the Chocolate Toffee and Key Lime Pie. Oh, the Key Lime. I have raved about that one to anyone who will listen... The graham cracker crust on the bottom, lovely curd in the middle, moist fluffy cake. I love it! Randomly walked into this neighborhood shop after my acupuncture appointment to satisfy my sweets craving and I was not disappointed! They had several flavors, mini cupcakes, and cookies. My daughter and I were in search of a treat when we came across Cupcakin'. She spotted the balloons out front and so she was immediately on board. I was a bit more skeptical, but hey, it's a cupcake so sure. Why not. She ordered the Double Chocolate and I had the Lemon Cream Pie. I did manage to steal a bite of the chocolate and wow. It was very rich and moist. But the Lemon Cream Pie stole the show. The cake was so moist, it was fantastic. Also, there's a graham cracker base to the cupcake that 1) holds it together a bit more and 2) gives it some extra texture and flavor. It really was a unique take on a lemon cupcake. The various flavors? Worth it. Normally I love carrot cake, but the cupcake is actually my least favorite. It's not bad, it's just that everything else is so much better. Salted caramel? Not to salty and not to sweat. Chocolate Raspberry? With some hidden raspberry in the center is pure joy. The flavors of everything are absolutely on point. It's a bit pricy, but it's so gosh darn good. Small things. We decided to try this location and hope they were as great as the Telegraph location, because we absolutely fell in love with their bakery items. *I will put a disclaimer that I normally don't seek out cupcakes, but Cupcakin Bake Shop changed my opinions of what cupcakes are all about. If you don't want to spend unnecessary income on delicious pastries, NEVER come to a Cupcakin shop. We have come to these shops so many times in the span of a month that I realize this may be close to addiction. But that's how good these cupcakes are. Filled with love and joy and pure bliss. The red velvet is a staple as well as the key lime. But cookies and cream (vegan) and holiday special gingerbread cupcakes were amazing as well. I highly recommend any Cupcakin Bake Shop in your local area. But I warned you! :) This location is also a much larger store front. I'm not a cupcake person but Cupcakin Bake Shop has won me over. My personal favorite is the red velvet as this cupcake has the perfect level of sweetness for me. Some of the other cupcakes are quite a bit sweeter and would be perfect for those with a sweet tooth. All the cupcakes we tried [peanut butter, key lime, lemon curd (?), dirty south, double chocolate, salted caramel, and carrot cake) were moist with abundant amounts of frosting and they held up for a few days without losing freshness. All the cupcakes are mini works of art & I appreciate the tiny details (makes differentiating the cupcakes much easier). My coworkers loved them so much. The staff at the Shattuck location is the best, taking time to go over the different cupcakes. There's generally enough street parking and the street scene is much more mellow than on Telegraph. read more

My mom orders dozens of Cupcakin' cupcakes for birthdays and special occasions, and there's so many amazing flavor options, but my absolute favorites are key lime or lemon. I first learned about these delicious goodies from a neighbor who gifted me day old cupcakes. They were quite good after a day, so I figured the day of ones must be even better. I was in the area one day and decided to stop by. Parking is street only, but if you get lucky you can find it right in front. A quarter in the meter is enough to go in and out with no lines. Once I went it, I was overwhelmed with the cuteness of it all. Several years ago cupcake spots were all the craze and I must admit I tried several for the fad. Most weren't anything memorable, but these are actually good! Especially the key lime and lemon cream (their mini crusts at the bottom make these my absolute favorites). The salted caramel is my runner up. The carrot one was good but I think I'd be okay if I never tried any other flavors because my top three are that satisfying. If you're pinching pennies last time I went I noticed there were some discounted cakes from the previous day (and they're probably equally yummy) so be on the lookout. read more
