I visited Iowa for a work trip and this was the only place open early enough for me to get breakfast. Thankfully it was great! I normally don't get super sugary coffees but I got the Valentine's Day mocha special and it was decadent. For food, I got a slice of the quiche and a chai muffin. I was truly surprised how many people were sitting at tables and socializing before 8 AM on a Tuesday morning. It seems a lot of the customers were regulars. The baristas called nearly everyone by their first name and knew what they wanted to drink. The ambiance is a fun vintage style. Plenty of things to look at and merchandise fills a wall. The one thing missing...food. I had worked all night and needed something before hitting the road and my options were muffins and cookies. Nothing of substance. They did have a gluten free muffin, so kudos for that fact. But no breakfast sandwiches or egg items. This left me disappointed. They also don't offer free refills on coffee. Pay again. read more

I love this cheery coffee shop so much! Tucked in at one end of our walkable Main Street in Cedar Falls, Cup of Joe beckons. From the sidewalk, where you may be seated, if you like, signs advertising specials invite you inside. A bell tinkles as you walk in the door, and you are greeted with a friendly hello or two. The shop itself exudes casual warmth, with uplifting (but not jarring) colors, café tables and chairs, and cozy clusters of softer seating. There is ample space - nothing is crowded - and the ceilings soar. It's the staff, of course, who make this establishment shine. Even if they're crazy busy behind the counter, they take the time to smile, make eye contact, and connect with you, however briefly, as a person whom they appreciate. Very warm people. I find it a challenge on each visit to select from the bounty available: coffee & coffee drinks, chai and other teas & beverages, but also baked goods, like coffee cake, cheesecake, quiche, scones, and molasses cookies as big as your face baked to nicely crackled crispness on the outside, but still chewy and so delicious on the inside. I didn't try the coffee here but I tried their baked goods and they are so creamy, moist, and delicious! Definitely a quaint little corner shop on the main street in the downtown area that's accessible after your dinner or a great stop for breakfast across the street from the Hampton, river crossing the railroad tracks, and walking path. The two girls working behind the counter were very friendly and had a lot of knowledge about the baked goods ingredients. I thought their prices were fair (about $4 for a large sized peanut butter and chocolate Rice Krispy treat). I would definitely visit here again to try their coffee and more baked goods! read more

The place: Some coffee shops have an uncertain identity. Such is not the case with Cup of Joe. They know exactly who they are and they commit. Cup of Joe loves their color and they're not afraid to use it. From the walls with the 80s inspired polka dot blobs to the orange statement couch up front and the colorful table lamps. The cheery yellow walls were a welcome sight on a chilly morning. The furniture looks like it would be at home in a vintage shop, but collected as they are in Cup of Joe, you're welcome to use the coffee table with the hairpin legs. Marvel at the avocado chair and the diner chairs. From my cozy seat, I count 5 mannequin torsos used as decoration and avoiding the creepy factor by not making eye contact with me. The menu is 4 chalkboards wide featuring coffee, espresso drinks, and tea. There's fresh bakery which I was assured were all baked this morning upstairs. Did I mention the disco on the sound system? There's disco on the sound system. The location: Downtown Cedar Falls. Right on a corner, you can't miss it. On a Friday morning, parking around the corner was super easy. It looks like street parking is either 2 or 3 hours limited. The food/drink: Cup of Joe has 3 sizes (8, 12, and 16oz) of in-house coffee mugs. Thank you for that! I only needed a dribble of cream for my coffee, the dark toasty flavor was perfect for me. There's plenty of bakery available. I spied danish, scones, and croissants as well as cookies and bars. I had a slice of frittata, warmed up, and it was scrumptious. It looks like there are vegan and gluten free options available! The service: An utter delight. I was greeted warmly and helped quickly. I appreciated the hospitality! I've been here for thirty minutes and the cheer from the baristas hasn't waned. In fact, I've noticed people being greeted by name, which I love. I do a lot of travel and go to different coffee shops around the country this particular one does NOT have a refill policy for just a coffee so that's gonna be another Zonk on top of the sub par Employee kindness! They did have a couple great Vegan choices though they need to be a bit friendlier to customers! Not impressed enough to return upon my next business trip! Located in Cedar Falls' thriving downtown Main Street is Cup of Joe. Eccentric and proud of it, this eco-friendly coffeeshop is lined with repurposed 50's style tables, sofas, and chairs. A green-certification award displayed on a shelf above the brews means that Cup of Joe has taken numerous steps to reduce waste including its use of colorful, mis-matched Fiestaware. Socially conscious customers have fair trade options to select including flavored teas from Republic of Tea. The staff is as perky as their strongest brew and quick to remember customer names and their regular drinks and treats. Upon my first visit, employee Sarah took the time to introduce herself, ask my name and make me feel welcomed into Cup of Joe. My next visit, and hundreds of customers later, Sarah greeted me by first name and asked if I wanted another double soy latte with sugar-free vanilla. After punching my card where I can prepay 7 drinks and get an 8th free (large soy with flavor ~$5), she hand delivered my coffee over to the table I had made camp at. No matter what time of day or night I visit Cup of Joe, the excellent customer service is consistent. And not only is the customer service exceptional, but they are some of the hardest working baristas I have ever seen, constantly cleaning and restocking. The retro style décor pairs well with ever-changing art for sale featuring local artists. Local musicians showcase their talent with live jazz every Thursday and varied artists on Friday and Saturday nights. Eclectic customers range from the young artist searching for inspiration to the weekday retiree reading the Waterloo Courier. Nearly half of the clientele on any given day or time is devoted regulars and the other half are those just discovering or passing through downtown Cedar Falls. The staff is friendly, the culture is open-minded, and the owner is socially responsible with visible business practices that reflect those values. Product choices suit the customer wishing for a simple basic brew to more diverse needs such as organic, vegan, low fat, or Coke in a glass bottle special requests. My favorite go-to-drinks include: delicious sugar-free vanilla double-soy lattes, sugar-free vanilla-raspberry Italian sodas, and hot apple cider. You really can't go wrong with any of the sweet treats but my ultimate favorite is their no-bake cookie. The clinking of spoons scraping saucers to get every last morsel of baked-good attest to the deliciousness of bakery goods sourced from an independent local baker. I choose to keep coming back to Cup of Joe because, to me, it is the embodiment of happiness in the Cedar Valley. P.S: Reviews below say no wi-fi but there is unlimited free wi-fi. Important Things to Know: -They use direct trade, fair trade, and organic coffee. -You need a bill of at least $4 to use a credit card. They do accept credit cards, though. -They serve a plethora of different drinks - both hot, iced, sweet, and unsweetened. -They also serve treats. Looks like they had little cakes, little breads, and more. They sell them for eating at the shop or package them up as a to-go treat. -Decent amounts of seating. Lots of four-person and two-person tables. A couple of three-person couches. A couple of single-person chairs. Also some sets of two-person outdoor tables and chairs. Pros: -You have the choice to get your coffee for inside or to-go. They use reusable drinkware for indoor coffee choices, so yay for less environmental waste! -Baristas were super friendly. Like, very friendly. They were happy to make a recommendation for me and didn't seem annoyed at all. The barista even engaged me in a bit of small chat when she delivered my drink. -I came in with 4 people ahead of me. I was served within a minute or two, and they offered to bring my drink to my table when I said I was drinking indoors. This is faster than most coffee chains by a lot. -They have cold, sweet coffees. Those "frou frou" drinks are what I love. I had a Snickers Iced Coffee. It wasn't quite as sweet as I was expecting, but it was still really good at a lot better than the "candy bar flavored" coffees that I've had at Dunkin Donuts. The coffee here tasted fresh and not bitter, and it had a nice mixture between sweet and coffee. -They are open later than most coffee places in town. They're open until 10PM or 11PM most nights. Cons: -I'm not-so-fond of the interior decor. I know it's a slight nit-pick, but I'm not a huge fan of the retro, mismatched interior decor. I'm more of a "super modern" type of decor girl. Everything seemed like it was decent-enough shape. It looked retro - not destroyed. -Seems like it can get pretty busy. There was a single open table when I came here on a Friday morning during the summer. I imagine this gets worse when college students are actually in session. -Parking is a bit of a pain. Lots of bicycles outside, so a lot of people probably bike here. However, it's located on Main Street, so it means fussing a bit about parking. You may end up walking a block or two. -Coffee is still surprisingly expensive. A "small" version of my drink was $4.60. Not horrible, but you're still in large-coffee-chain-prices territory. Would definitely recommend this place, though. I'm glad that if Cedar Falls only gets a few independent coffee shops, this gets to be one of them. read more

Very pricey. I saw the amazing reviews on Yelp and wanted to give it a try. There was a queue till the doorway when we entered. I ordered the cappuccino with double espresso. I was asked which size of cup I wanted among the small, medium and large. The small was way too small, so I picked the medium. Guess what the price was - $5+ . For a cup that was the size of a small cup in Starbucks. First disappointment. As soon as picked the cup up in my hands, I felt like it was half full. When I opened the lid to mix in sugar, I realised the top 1/4th was foam. I guess when I ordered cappuccino I should have expected that, but I felt cheated. Second disappointment. The staff was definitely friendly, coffee was just okay, nothing extraordinary. The ambience was decent. I didn't feel like it was as good as the hype. read more

I have yet to find a mocha in Des Moines that rivals the tasty double mocha from Cup of Joe. I believe they use chocolate milk - a stellar idea! Why don't more businesses do that? It achieves the perfect balance of coffee and decadent chocolatey taste followed by a touch of sweetness from the whipped cream, but isn't TOO sweet. This place is pretty special to me and my pa - when we used to live in the area, we'd come here about once a week and chat and we've never had a bad coffee. The atmosphere is pretty eclectic. As a coffee house, of course it always smells fantastic and homey in here. They have local art on the walls that I believe is always for sale, but I could be wrong. I really, really dig their lamps that they have at each table - everything is sort of mismatchy but comfortable and cozy. Sitting by the windows in their squashy couches and people-watching with a cup of coffee is always a treat. During peak hours (weekend mornings and a few nights) the seating can be a bit tight, as they only have a handful of retro tables lining the walls and a few couches. I assume it's common sense that you don't spend a few hours at a coffee house with limited seating without actually buying a coffee or anything at all... there is a library down the street if you need a quiet place to study. This USED TO BE the best place in Waterloo/CedarFalls to hang out and scope-out cute guys. The quality of service went downhill in 2011; they are all students so the faces always change. The next semester might be great -- or it may continue to suck. Regardless, this place is a staple someone goes to in order to consider yourself PART of the Cedar Valley. I've been going to this place off & on since I was 13 -- it once was a big part of me. It's sad just how crumby the management devolved. The prices have been creeping up over the years, but since they have nearly no competition they'll get away with it. Also, it is 2017 -- get rid of the minimum purchase amount for debit/credit card purchases. If the expense is too much for the business to eat, either get a new vendor or go out of business. I used to give this place 4 stars and then slowly 2 stars. Now it deserves 0 stars. Drink recommendations? Any caffè breve will do, or ask for a "Jumper Cable" (a double espresso over ice mixed with Diet Coke; hint--it's in the book). Their coffee is great, but they don't roast their own, so don't let them be smug about it (they did none of the work). The peppermint cheesecake used to be to die for. WARNING: They have live music or Thurs & Sat... It can get quite crowded, which makes it lose its hang-out vibe. Also, the jazz musicians typically aren't good (despite being quite loud). They're all local artists...it gets very repetitive. UPDATE (2016): I'm sad to say after multiple visit the past couple of years I'm updating my review to a negative one.
