I have always loved this restaurant. Great food and friendly service make it so that I just have to stop every time I drive by!

We pulled up to Cumberland Restaurant on a rainy Thursday for a late lunch. I love the classic/retro neon sign out front even the few letters that don't light up just add to the character. You can take a seat anywhere inside when you enter. There are two main rooms. The booth that I plopt into was very very well worn. Like, there were parts that I felt like I sank to the floor and then I could scootch over and sit on the hard support beam. Not super comfy. Our server's mood kinda matched the weather outside: dreary. My mom ordered the corned beef hash and a biscuit. I ordered a house salad and a hot dog with chili, mustard, and cole slaw. The salad came out and it was pretty basic: iceberg lettuce, a few tomoatoes, and 3 radish slices. Nothing wrong with it and everything was fresh. Mom shared that her corned beef hash and biscuit were good. The hot dog had a strong tangy flavor to it. I pretty sure it was coming from a particularly vinegary cole slaw. Overall it was good. If you are on 60 and have to have a place to eat, this is a place. But in this travelers opinion, drive on to Appomattox or Powhatan. Cumberland Restaurant had no redeeming qualities except it was where it was when we were hungry. I hate to give this landmark a bad review, but I call it like I see it. read more

A decent breakfast and diner food joint. Some hits, some misses. Plus side: roast beef sandwich, mashed potatoes. Good open faced offering with thick beef gravy, real potatoes (suitably lumpy.) Also the Oyster stew, a good portion of oysters in a simple broth of dairy, Oyster likker, and butter. Delish. Also very good -- side veg.... yams were well spiced, turnip greens were tasty. Not as impressive was the country ham sandwich. While the $6 price point was very reasonable, it is rather spartan in portion size and served on dry toast. Mustard or even mayo would improve things. Also, the corn bread is dry and bland. Both were fine, just not great. The only thing that was a real disappointment was the onion ring order. Clearly fried at the wrong temp, the factory frozen batter-dipped rings steamed the onions inside the batter ring to the point the rings got soggy at service. Not at all good. Oh why the low stars! I actually did a stop by at the antique store next door. Ok yall let me share..... unless I see other people who look like me I may not visit but I was like I wanna go! So first the antique store which was lovely fun and speaking to the owner as well as other patrons who love the old stuff was great. After that I wanted to go to this run down looking old diner style restaurant. Walked inside and it was like stepping back in time..... loved it!!!!! They even had a phone on the wall lol. I sat at the counter; ordered chicken fried steak, large orange juice eggs and English muffin. My food was so good that I didnt hear when the waitress asked me how everything was. We had the pleasure of eating at Cumberland Restaurant during a recent visit to Bear Creek Lake State Park. We read the glowing reviews on Yelp and heard equally positive comments about it from long-time visitors to the state park. The lunch meal we ordered was simply delicious. Home-cooked food at its finest. The many choices of mouth-watering desserts made it hard to leave with just one. What a wonderful surprise and hidden treasure! When you walk in you step back in time from the checkered floors, counter seating etc. Service was excellent and very friendly. My husband had breakfast and LOVED all of it he said the eggs were very fresh, ham was incredible - he grew up in the mid-west on farms so has typically low expectations most places and he was beyond pleased. I had the burger and onion rings - burger was good/standard but the onion rings had so much flavor you could actually taste the onion!! Desserts looked so delicious-unfortunately I was to full but really wanted to try the Funnel Fries sounds so so good. My Husband had some type of Apple Coffee? Ring-cake and he loved. We were driving along a route where there were literally no eateries before this for several miles, so I was glad to finally be able to stop at something. It was crowded based on that fact, and the menu and interior was very standard. The interior is small and not much decor, but our coffee was always filled. The menu is pretty diner basic standard, but that's pretty expected. The dessert menu on the table was full of exclamation points on every description. I ended up just having scrambled eggs and French toast. It was fine, but nothing that I, a non cook, couldn't have made. It was fine but nothing special, except the fact there wasn't much on the road after it either, so it was welcome just to have a hearty breakfast. The waitress was nice and serve was good. This establishment is not only violating health codes, but the people are very discriminatory.. it is not a comfortable environment. They do not use gloves or wash hands when making salads, lemons, etc. This is a serious issue and I hope someone doesn't get severely ill or worse. read more

There seemed to be nothing to eat at along the road so this was a welcome sight. We live little diners like this and walking in I knew we found the kind of place we were searching for to eat breakfast. It was okay...I had two eggs and toast. My eggs over medium were cooked perfect but the bacon was so over cooked it tasted burnt. Toast was dry with real butter on the side but I wasn't given a choice of breads (wheat, sourdough) and no hash browns comes with your meal. Weird. My husband has pancakes and sausage. Pancakes were on the small side and sausage looked and tasted like it was cut off a roll (nothing offensive but nothing good about that either). We had water as usual but for fourteen dollars plus tip i can't say I would eat here again. It really looks like it has potential so perhaps I would give it another try for lunch. Used to hear everyone talks about this place 20 years ago. We were driving by to get a Christmas tree and figured we'd stop by. Long story short, just don't come here. I paid $9.25 for s BBQ platter than was just not good. The barbecue tasted like the the stuff I used to have in high school. The waffle fries were nothing but crisp. No potato whatsoever. The mashed potatoes were very watery. The size of the meal for what I paid was outrageous. I want to like the place but won't be back. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. read more

We stopped by for late lunch on the way to Richmond. The people are nice and service was fine. My husband had the open face roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and green beans. The sandwich with gravy was fine. The green beans were barely seasoned and the mashed potatoes were very thin and bland. I ordered the mac and cheese, cole slaw, green beans and a small serving of chicken salad. The cole slaw was good. The rest was not so much. The mac and cheese was not your momma's. More like a bad substitute for Kraft mac and cheese. Awful. The beans I already mentioned. The chicken salad was minced chicken with lots of onion flavor and maybe eggs? The only reason I can see for this restaurant to still be open and serving is the fortune of being the only game in town. Wait staff was friendly but seemingly distracted. Restaurant was under half capacity and having orders taken and receiving a check was needlessly drawn out. Food arrived fast after ordering, but I can only assume quality was sacrificed to do so. Living up to the title "greasy spoon," the onion rings on mine and French fries on my partner's plate left a yellow, oily puddle. Club sandwiches were thinly filled. My rye bread ended up on his plate and I got his toasted white (a quick switcheroo, where we both ended up having to handle each other's meals, fixed this). Diet coke, a club sandwich, and onion rings come to over $11. Will not return unless by some twist of fate im desperate for a bite and this is the only port in a storm. On the way back from a work trip to Richmond, my co-worker (who was driving) needed some gas, and we were both hungry. REALLY hungry. That's when we came upon the Cumberland Restaurant. While filling the car, we asked a passerby on foot if it was any good, and he simply said "You NEED to go there.". Well, ok then! Time looks like it stopped about 30 years ago inside of the diner, but that's not a bad thing. It's comfortable, well maintained, and you feel at home, even if you've never been there before. Service was quaint, folksy, and extremely polite. Our waitress even offered her frank opinon on what was the best choice. (Her words about the fried chicken: "I'm not a fan".) My co-worker ordered fried pork chops. What came out were two of the largest, meatiest chops I've ever laid eyes on. He says they were simply the best he's ever had. For myself, I went off the board with the crab cake dinner. I was surprised to find two cakes, broiled with little filler, and lots of flavor. We both washed it down with a chocolate milkshake that left us both feeling glad we waited all day to eat! Is it out of the way? Oh yeah. Was it worth the trip? You bet. I can't vouch for every entree, but based on my one trip, I wouldn't hesitate to make a "wrong turn" for a good meal and other milkshake! read more

This is certainly an establishment where you can trust the A-OK rating. Cumberland certainly doesn't have much in the way of fine dining or even dining in general. This is one of the primary places, from what I understand, so off we went for dinner. My mother will patronize them solely for the fact that they have a smoking section (it's an entirely separate, enclosed room, so non-smokers fear not, you can dine and breathe clean air). While perusing the menu, I learned that this place has been around for over 60 years. The decor will tell you that not much has changed. The fact that the table placards are advertising their *NEW* root beer float dessert will tell you that the menu probably hasn't changed too much, either. The fried pickle appetizer is pretty alright, but note that they are pickle spears (so you suffer the possibility of soggy middles and pickles falling out of the breading shell). They're definitely brought in frozen, as some of mine were stuck together on the breading and the part where they were stuck did not get fully cooked so there was some raw-ish batter on the parts where they were stuck. I ordered the crab cake platter. It comes with 2 Maryland style cakes (restaurant variety, to be specific - fun fact: restaurant variety has little filler ingredients, whereas boardwalk cakes have various fillers) and your choice of 2 vegetable sides and a roll or cornbread. You can sub a garden salad for one of the sides for a 1.75 up-charge. I did this. The salad was simple (iceberg lettuce, tomato wedges, cucumber, slices of radish) but satisfying all the same. My side, green beans, were from a can, so that was um. Well, canned green beans? The crab cakes were definitely brought in because you could tell from the taste alone that they've been living in a freezer. I'm not an anti-freezer nazi, but with seafood, and specifically crab, it really can have a negative effect on the flavor. I will say that I was pleased that there wasn't very much filler in the cake itself, but overall, the flavor was compromised due to the freezing and all I could think of was the much better crab cakes I've had in my life. One annoying thing was that my dinner roll was soggy. You couldn't cut into it. It's clearly a heat-and-serve dinner roll that's brought in, but whatever they kept it in made mine a doughy mess. My dining partners ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a tuna salad sandwich. They'd both been here before and they both ordered their go-to dishes. They seemed happy enough with their choices. The food is pretty standard, I suppose? It's satisfying. It's easy if you live nearby. The service is quite good and very pleasant. The place is clean. It's certainly the epitome of a hometown diner. I'll head back, I'm sure, as it's close and the food is decent, but I'll hold out hope that the people of this tiny, tiny town get some truly great dining establishment sometime soon. read more

This was my third time eating here. This time was almost a carbon copy of the first two trips. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and they didn't disappoint. They are consistent beyond a doubt. If you want lack luster food and hick town atmosphere, this the place to go. The only thing I found decent about this dinner was its service. Waitress was polite and attentive. Steak was ordered "medium" and delivered "well done". French fries looked like the grease was a week old, and soggy to boot. Cole slaw was neither sweet nor sour and not chilled. Green beans looked they came out of an institutional sized can with no flavor. "Butterfly shrimp" looked to be from a frozen box and tasted about the same. The salad was fresh and was the only thing that meet expectations. Mind you my expectations were not that high to begin with. My Hot Fudge Sunday was as good as I could have made at home. Since they didn't have to prepare it in any way except to put the ingredients in a dish it turned out good. Most disappointing of all was the FREE WIFI, free because it didn't work for more than 30 seconds at a time, just long enough to load your browser and get, page not found. Eh...for what it is, its ok. Cumberland has a population of about 6 so this is probably all they got. Stopped here today while on a motorcycle ride. I'd been here before and I remembered it being a little seedy...perfect after swatting a few bugs off my face. I had one of the specials, the fried oysters...pretty good actually. On our way from Appomattox to Williamsburg, we stopped for a late lunch. The previous reviews had us concerned but "hey" we've got hungry kids here (and adults). The kids split a popcorn shrimp basket (more than enough for two little kids) with applesauce & cornbread. The adults ordered a grilled cheese, pork BBQ sandwich and home cut fries. I got lettuce, tomato, and pickles on my burger for which they do charge extra (it is stated on the menu). The waitress was attentive. Cute little diner on the side of the road on the Anderson Hwy. Service was very friendly -- I just got a sweet tea and it was good! They also have FREE WIFI!
