Roast beef n gravy sandwich with mashed potatoes
    Michael S.

A decent breakfast and diner food joint. Some hits, some misses. Plus side: roast beef sandwich, mashed potatoes. Good open faced offering with thick beef gravy, real potatoes (suitably lumpy.) Also the Oyster stew, a good portion of oysters in a simple broth of dairy, Oyster likker, and butter. Delish. Also very good -- side veg.... yams were well spiced, turnip greens were tasty. Not as impressive was the country ham sandwich. While the $6 price point was very reasonable, it is rather spartan in portion size and served on dry toast. Mustard or even mayo would improve things. Also, the corn bread is dry and bland. Both were fine, just not great. The only thing that was a real disappointment was the onion ring order. Clearly fried at the wrong temp, the factory frozen batter-dipped rings steamed the onions inside the batter ring to the point the rings got soggy at service. Not at all good. Desserts looked good but weren't tried. One word of note - the restaurant hours yelp is showing are very wrong. Check the restaurant website before you go.

french toast and scrambled eggs on a plate

We were driving along a route where there were literally no eateries before this for several miles, so I was glad to finally be able to stop at something. It was crowded based on that fact, and the menu and interior was very standard. The interior is small and not much decor, but our coffee was always filled. The menu is pretty diner basic standard, but that's pretty expected. The dessert menu on the table was full of exclamation points on every description. I ended up just having scrambled eggs and French toast. It was fine, but nothing that I, a non cook, couldn't have made. It was fine but nothing special, except the fact there wasn't much on the road after it either, so it was welcome just to have a hearty breakfast. The waitress was nice and serve was good. It was overall very okay but it did the job.

We stumbled on The Cumberland Restaurant after picking up this years Christmas tree. Great little diner. Simple menu. Breakfast all day, lunch, and a few dinner entrees. The burgers were delicious and not overwhelming. Great service. We will return!

We heard that THIS was the place to go for breakfast. It was ok. I would stop in again, but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. The portions were so tiny and not really that special. The service was just ok too. If your hungry, stop in. If you looking for a great breakfast, keep moving.

The bartender greeted me and asked if I wanted the regular menu or was the lunch menu sufficient. I perused the lunch menu, which had several different options. Surprisingly, everything on that menu was half price! What a deal! I ordered the most expensive item, the catfish sandwich, which was only $10. Even though they were very busy, I got my sandwich within ten minutes. They call it a sandwich but there ain't no way I could eat it like a sandwich, even with my big mouth. The catfish came with onion, lettuce, tomato, and some kind of sauce on a toasted sub roll. It came with a knife. I cut off the first bite. It was .......... GREAT! Wow! I have always gotten BBQ or fish tacos before. Fantastic blending of flavors. It came with a choice of a side and I chose fries. The fries were barely alive. Good flavor but partially limp. That was the only negative. I wish I lived closer to Farmville. I would make them regular visits during the week. They keep teasing us about expanding to Madison Heights but no action yet.

I had the fried catfish which was nice and crispy yet light breading. Nice portions of baked beans and mac & cheese. Baked beans were very good, with a sweet bacon flavor but I'm a mac & cheese guy and theirs is incredible. Smoked flavor that just is throughout the cheese. Highly recommend stopping in. I will be going back and trying some other items.

I…read moredid notice that Charley's had varied reviews but the more recent ones seemed positive, so we gave it a go for dinner. It was a nice day, so we asked to sit outside. As a party of two, they don't allow you to sit waterside, because, as I heard the host tell most every party that arrived after us as well, those tables are reserved for larger groups. So, keep that in mind if you're looking for waterside dining. We were seated next to the door, and I didn't notice until halfway through the meal that my chair was covered in cobwebs. Kind of gross. The floor to the exterior patio was also very dirty. My mom was stomping away at ants. I'd recommend they consider cleaning more outside, especially considering it's the main allure of the restaurant. After being seated, our server greeted us. She was overall friendly albeit a bit slow, and when I asked which Riesling was sweeter (they had two), she didn't know. She asked a manager, who replied that he can't drink on shift. It was a polarity compared to the service the table next to us later received from the bartender, who provided samples to them and was on top of things for them the entire meal. I was mildly jealous, honestly. Without the option to sample, I selected a Riesling at random (the German one), and it was fortunately very good. I also heard the sparkling Moscato was pleasant. We ordered the jumbo pretzel to start, which came with a tasty cheese mixture. I would say that's where the good part ended for me. My mom didn't want our salads to arrive with the pretzel, so she asked for them to be spaced out, but then it took aaaaages for the salads to come out. The cheese on the ceasar was good, but that's about it. I couldn't taste any dressing, so I left most of it behind. I was torn in between the mahi and red snapper entrees, but ultimately chose the red snapper despite the server calling it fishy. I asked for extra sauce when I ordered it, but it came with regular sauce, so I asked again. It took some time to arrive as the kitchen had to heat it up, but when it did arrive, it was a TINY amount. I was so perplexed. The fish itself was not that great. It didn't taste fresh to me. My mom ordered the ribs, as they were explained to be really good and "fall off the bone." Can attest they were not. They were actually very fatty. They never should've left the kitchen. I relayed this feedback to our server, and she took both of our meals off the bill since we didn't eat them. I was shocked but thought that was very kind of her. I'd say this spot needs some more quality control between food and cleanliness. I'm unlikely to return personally, but it's worth a shot if you're in town and interested in waterfront dining or a nice glass of wine, I suppose.

Lovely decorations and definitely has a 50s feel to it. I got the bacon jalapeno burger omelette, fries and 2 slices of toast are included. The omelette was delicious and chock full of toppings, my only possible complaint would be that the cheese coverage didn't reach the far end. However, that can probably be specified beforehand and its not enough to knock of a star. Regardless of this, I loved it. The bacon and burger were full of flavor and the grilled jalapenos had just the right amount of spice. The grilled onions on top were a great touch. When you're done with your omelette and there's leftover toppings on the plate, you can use fries to sort of scoop them up (awesome). The service was also great. The waitress was talking to regulars, and even asked us what we were up to today. Food came out pretty quick and she asked us if we wanted refills the moment our cups were low. Overall, nice little place. Forgot to get a picture of the food because I was so focused on eating. If I ever come back through the area between the operating hours of 8 and 2 I will certainly be going here. If I happened to pass through after they closed I would probably break in for the pie. (Kidding)

It is very small, with about fifteen stools wrapping around a classic service counter. According to the menu, the diner is a "One-Master Model 15-Stool Valentine steel building," made by Valentine Manufacturing Company of Wichita, Kansas, in 1955. They have a small parking lot in back of the diner. I parked there and then saw a bathroom entrance sign -- after a 2 1/2-hour trip, nature was calling. It is a very clean bathroom located at the rear of the building, with a separate entrance from the parking lot. There is no access to the restroom from inside the diner -- a unique and nostalgic feature you don't see much anymore. I walked around to the front of the building, entered, sat down on a stool, and was greeted with, "Y'all having a good day so far?" I had a half sweet/half unsweet tea and the Cheeseburger Deluxe with no mayonnaise. It came with lettuce, tomato, pickle chips, onions, French fries, and cole slaw. I put ketchup on the fries, but the fresh tomato alone provided plenty of flavor for the juicy, delicious burger. The French fries were crispy and delicious -- exactly what you hope for at a classic diner. The cole slaw was outstanding and clearly tasted homemade. The pies looked incredible, and because the cheeseburger platter was so good, I had a piece of blueberry buttermilk cake topped with whipped cream -- wow! There is also a clearly posted 3% surcharge if paying with a credit card. Prices are reasonable, so it didn't feel like an issue. This was a great overall experience, and I would recommend this classic, nostalgic mid-20th-century diner to anyone traveling through Farmville. It closes at 2 pm, so plan accordingly!

After everyone else gave her their order, I had to stop her from leaving so I could tell her what I wanted. I told her that I wanted a french dip sandwich. The orders took forever to be served (the place was not busy) and came out one or two at a time. Instead of a french dip the server thought I said french onion soup. I think the only reason this place stays in business is because it is one of 3 restaurants in Scottsville. Time for the owners to step up their game!!
