We were looking for something different after having done traditional Austrian meals for several…read moredays. We saw that Istra offered grill seafood and decided to try. Istra is actually a Croatian restaurant, and they specialize in seasonal grilled seafood and truffle pasta. There is no standard menu - more a choice of 1, 2 or 3 course meal. The star is their fish platter which consisted of grilled fish, grilled calamari and shrimps, over a head of mixed root vegetables. The owners don't speak a lot of English but they were very hospitable. I highly recommend reading through their websites before going so you know what to expect. Now the food. Spectacular is the only word that came to mind. First time we just had the fish platter for 2 and shared between 3 people. A luxurious platter with 2 perfectly pan-fried fish, 2 shrimps in shell and 2 grilled baby calamari on a bed of carrots, squash, zucchini and mushrooms magically turned up at the table. The seasoning is basic but perfect. A complementary basket of bread also came with the meal and house white wine paired very well with the seafood fair. It was so good we went back for lunch again the next day. This time we also ordered their truffle pasta. The white truffle on the pasta was epic - appetizer size was obly €18!! I dare say the same size with black truffle in NY would have put us back at around 30 bucks and nowhere as much truffle that was on the plate. Highly recommend this place if you ever go to Salzburg and wanted something other than the standard Austrian fare.

Absolutely delicious !…read more Traveling from California, it's unusual to see schnitzel on every menu. Istra seafood restaurant was a refuge from all the meat-oriented restaurants during my week trip in Austria. Started with a tuna carpaccio topped with light olive oil, sea salt and fresh ground pepper. Main dish was a fresh white fish grilled to perfection with a side of savory veggies to pair. Meal paired perfectly with Austrian table wine which was recommended by the waiter. Absolutely delicious, wonderful waiter and happy I took my hotels' recommendation to eat at Istra.

You would think a restaurant inside Mozart's birth house would be super touristy and cheesy…read more However, this restaurant featured innovative and delicious cuisine that ended up being up one of our favorite meals in Salzburg! Instead of catering to tourists with clichés of Austrian cuisine, this uses elements of Austrian cuisine and other cuisines (French, Italian) to create novel, memorable dishes. - Chestnut cream and bacon soup. This was the most memorable part of our meal! The flavor is a novel blend of both sweet and savory, and the combination of textures in this soup is fun -- light froth, creaminess, the crunchiness of croutons, the chewiness of bacon. This is a dish I will remember for years. - Fried salmon. It's really more grilled than fried. The salmon is solid and well-complimented by the saffron cream sauce and the beets. The presentation and mix of colors is also beautiful. - Truffle risotto with steak. The risotto has a good consistency, and the steak lends such rich flavor, and was cooked perfectly. Additionally, the atmosphere is hip and modern and overlooks the old town. The salt and pepper combination shaker caught our attention and you can actually buy it at the front! Anyways, I highly recommend this restaurant, especially after exploring Mozart's home!

The food is on the finer end of the Salzburger restaurant scene. Amazing pork, tasty lake trout, and the mushroom cream soup was handled with a deft, light touch. The coconut pudding with raspberry purée had only the barest hint of sweetness, which was perfect to end the meal. The chocolate mousse was nicely presented and tasty. Wine suggestions were knowledgeable and reasonable.

After spending three days in Salzburg, I can safely say this is my favorite restaurant there. It…read morewas so good, my girlfriend and I visited it twice. The deserts were freshly prepared and the best Austrian deserts we had in the city. The Radlers we had to drink both times were more on the fruit soda side, which meant they were sweet and crisp and not bitter. And finally, the food was superb. The best rindgulasch and schnitzel we had in the city. Inside it has a cozy bar type of feel and outside is a beautiful street cafe type set up. The waiters also all spoke English if we needed to speak English, and the food came out very quick both times we went.

My girlfriend and I were eating when two Indian men walked in and asked for a table. It was around 10 PM and the restaurant closed at 11. They were told the kitchen was closed, which is completely fair. What happened afterward was not. The men politely asked if they could see a menu and make a reservation for the following day. They were not argumentative whatsoever about being unable to eat that night. The waiter refused to give them a menu or make a reservation and said, "You came all the way from India to look at a menu?" The men again responded politely. The waiter then said, "You Indian people are always showing up so late." It was completely uncalled for and extremely uncomfortable to witness. Nothing about the behavior of these two men warranted being spoken to that way. People should be treated based on their actions, not stereotyped or discriminated against because of their race or ethnicity. My girlfriend and I were so uncomfortable with what we witnessed that we decided to leave. On our way out, I spoke with the two men and told them that I had witnessed the interaction and thought the way they were treated was completely inappropriate. Despite the food being great, I will not support a restaurant where I personally witnessed customers being treated this way.
