Full wall of VHS to pick from and some classic Ghibli for the night
Kenneth G.

This spot is a great mix between a dive and a movie theater. They have a full wall of movies that they rotate through and let our friend pick one out. The drinks are fairly cheap which is always a plus. Great spot to just hang out, have a couple rounds, and talk with friends. It's not overly loud and the bartender was just a super cool dude.

Once I heard about a new bar that catered to the movie lover in me, I couldn't wait to see what the fuss was all about. I rounded up some friends and we first arrived on a busy Saturday night. Word got out quick and the place was pretty busy. They have 3 big size TV's showcasing various movies and even class wrestling. There is seating outside and even a patio in the back. My first impression was a little overwhelming so I wanted to come back on a different day for a more chill vibe. I'm glad I did since I often now go every other week or so. The staff is amazing and very friendly. I like to sit at the bar sometimes just to stare at the big VHS collection on the wall. Drinks and food are affordable and there is something for everyone. Shuffleboard is often played by various patrons and sometimes there are DJ's playing amazing music sets on certain evenings. Sundays they will showcase a movie and turn the volume on. It's a great way to end the weekend and they have great taste of movies that they show. I'm a fan and glad it is a great addition to the neighborhood, cheers!

I saw this place online and thought it would be a cool spot to check out while visiting Portland. The neon lights and VHS bar wall were awesome, 90's themed decor and pictures everywhere, a few different TVs playing cult classics (it was Friday the 13th, so of course one of the Jason movies was on). There was a shuffleboard and an adult vending machine with surprise gifts. I think they also had a Photo Booth too. It wasn't too busy on Friday around 5pm. My friends and I ordered some drinks and food and hung out for a bit. I decided to try the Wild at Heart drink since it had mezcal. It was pretty good. We also ordered the super pretzel and a hot dog. The pretzel was good, the hot dog was decent. My friend ordered chicken strips with fries and that seemed to be the better food option. This is a definitely a unique spot. A whole 90's vibe!

Good service. Not too busy on a Saturday night. Walkable to a lot of other places. Good hot dog. The retro vibe was very cool. Not many people in their late 20's / early 30's when we went.

Love the theme and vibe of this bar! The VHS wall is so cool, love that it has a movie on, and that there is so much space and a shuffleboard. I enjoyed my Paloma cocktail but my husband was disappointed with his Old Fashioned - that said there's plenty of other options on the menu to enjoy.

There is a dining area just off the bar with some table seating; larger 4- and 6-top tables are closer to the right side of the bar as you enter. To the left, 2-tops transition to more open lounge seating. We shared delightful dishes from the late-night menu: the Brussels sprouts, the chicken tenders and the smash burger. I recommend all of them if those kinds of snacks are to your taste. I enjoyed a couple of good, ice - cold martinis. My beloved told our server that she couldn't find anything that quite called out to her from the sophisticated mocktails menu and asked if something sweet and cherry-flavored could be made for her. The bar delivered with an impressively balanced drink garnished with a cured cherry. "Because," as our server told us, "everyone deserves a swizzle stick." The food, drinks and service all were wonderful. For a restaurant, the thumping house music was a little oppressive. That was the club aspect of this place's identity. Still a great place to get a late night in downtown Portland.

We both started with drinks: Me: Gimme three steps. It definitely hit the spot after a long day. Onto food - we started with the Tavern Salad ($16). It hit all the notes. Greens and radishes for crunch, apples to add sweetness and blue cheese crumbles for salt. A great start to a wonderful meal. Next: Grilled albacore ($41) and roasted cauliflower ($$28). The albacore tasted good and it had with it grilled summer squash, heirloom tomato & corn, charred eggplant puree, chile oil vinaigrette. Really loved the eggplant in some ways more than the tuna. Score another for PNW freshness! The cauliflower - spicy due to the chipotle glazed with brightness from the pickled corn. Along with some grilled oyster mushrooms and coconut corn puree with scallions -it was probably my favorite dish. Had I not been so full, I might have told Gregg M we needed to order another one! Highly recommend.

The front patio was a nice place to enjoy golden hour and our service was exceptional. My dad got a brandy alexander, mom got a piña colada on the rocks and later a pink lady, and I got something like a Negroni (they make Negronis but I asked the server to choose something interesting and the result was absolutely splendid). Cheers to the professionals who helped make our visit even more special.

That said, no amount of cover charge seems to fix a recurring issue at many fun gay bars: the takeover by straight women. Both times I tried to get a drink, groups of women blatantly cut the line. Maybe the first time was an honest oversight--they might not have noticed me in my wheelchair (even though they were short and definitely should have). But twice? That feels like more than an accident. Most folks were awesome, though. Many moved aside or made space once they saw me, and the staff has been nothing but kind and attentive. Unfortunately, a few disrespectful patrons really soured the night--and as a disabled person, it makes me question how often I want to put myself in these spaces that should feel safe but too often don't.

We made friends left and right and had so much fun. My friend I was with was screaming and clapping in full cheer, I look over and the MC and DJ are giving us TERRIBLE looks. At one point they said, "if you want to be loud, go in the next room." The MC came up to my new gay friend and I and introduced themselves. And I said, "sorry about my friend, when she's excited she likes to scream." And the MC responded, "well when it's in my ear it's rude and inappropriate." Mind you the MC was like 4 ft away from my friend and I. I responded, "this is our first time in a gay bar and I don't feel welcomed anymore." Then she responded, "oh well I don't want you not to have a good time." Then walked away, and started talking shit to her DJ and friends surrounding. Then they ALL were giving me horrible dirty looks. As we were about to leave the bar the MC got on the mic and pointed to us and said, "hands up if you're a straight in this bar" and we did, and she went OFF on the mic, mind you this is now a packed bar, and starts saying how we're not respecting this bar and the people that come here. And went on to explain how much they have gone through because they are gay and growing up was hard. Then continued with, "Stick to your own straight bars!" I was so confused. We started to leave, and our new gay friend we made looks at me and goes up to the MC and asked why she was being rude. She responded, "your friends are transphobic!" And they security started to walk behind him and he grabbed me and said let's go, these people are rude. I was so UPSET I started crying, I am not PHOBIC to anyone anything! If I was I wouldn't have walked in that bar and had a great time and let alone made friends. First experience in a gay bar- I'll never go into one again. God forbid we're having fun and I stick up for my friend. I hope the MC understands how wrong she was last night. Because I'm still trying to get over this. Ruined a great night. Next time I'll make sure to avoid Badlands, god forbid I am a straight person hanging out with my gay friends..
