It was nearly impossible to get a table on a Fri/Sat after they first opened, so I settled for takeaway pizza at first (a few months ago) and finally dined there last Sunday night. Firstly, THANK YOU to being open on Sundays. It is so frustrating to find a decent place open to eat in Hobart on Sunday night; it drives me crazy. We called just a few hours before but didn't have any problem getting a table for 5. Throughout the night, almost every table was occupied and the takeaway pizzas and pastas were steadily headed out the door, so they obviously are doing well.
The 5 of us shared garlic bread and a garlic/cheese pizzetta to start, followed by a few pastas and two pizzas to share. A bonus is that they allow half & half pizzas, so we sampled 4 combos of toppings. The garlic delights were a nice way to start, and I was very happy with my entree-sized gnocci (cugini sauce came with salami, capsicum, chilli, olives, tomato & cream). It was the melt-in-your-mouth type of gnocci that can only be homemade. The sauce was also delish--I should've saved some garlic bread to wipe it up with. For an entree, it was a substantial size, and I could've gone home full, but decided to forage on and sample the pizzas. Peperoni, patate (potato, prusciutto, rosemary) , pescatore (seafood), and australiana (egg, bacon, onion, cheese) were enjoyed by all but none really stood out for me...I think it was the crust. Too thick and doughy; I like it thin and crispy.
I had checked their website and menus online and I couldn't find any mention about BYO, so I assumed it wasn't...but it is. Bottled wine only, but i don't know what the corkage fee is.
I have always been a fan of Da Angelo's in Battery Point, but now that I live on the Eastern shore, I will happily save myself the 20-minute drive and head to cugini instead. read more
