A Goat Cheese with grilled onions and greens and. mortadella ham with Swiss, and greens with an aioli sauce. Both were huge and tasty. Big enough for lunch and dinner. We also picked up a package of spiced ginger cookies that were out of this world. A nice bit of coarse salt on each. Service was great and there was a huge line that went quickly. Price for two sandwiches and 5 large cookies a little over 30$ AUDs. A bargain. Highly recommend.

This is a bit of a gem of a place, I have to admit. It's still quite a typical "shopping centre…read morecafe", but the window pides are delicious, and then there's the menu itself! It actually has poutine on the menu! Ok, so it doesn't actually use cheese curds, and there's nowhere near enough squeaky cheese (possibly the most acceptable alternative there is, tbh) in the dish to balance all the meat, but STILL. Then there's the lovely staff, the booth seating, and the coffee upgrade through Yelp... all good things. All good things. I like you, Rhyme St. I just have to remind myself how much I like you, because with you being stuck in the middle of the Cat & Fiddle, sometimes I forget.

In the end we managed to get an Irish pub in the city. When we turned up, it was a case of taking a look, shuddering and going 'Great. What now?' Thankfully, one of us had the temerity to ask the staff there where there was something a bit... Nicer. They recommended the Pumphouse just up the road. We walked up and to our delight, found a really nice, clean hospitable environment with a spacious aesthetic. Sitting next to the window we ordered some drinks. I ordered a mojito (a fond favourite from my time in Northern Italy) and it was quite nice, slightly too sweet for me but from my experiences with mojitos, it was a good one. I just don't have a sweet tooth so I prefer the more limey ones as opposed to the more sugary ones. Only a minor quibble. We then started ordering our dinner. I decided on the wallaby porterhouse (medium rare) with chimi churri and pangrattato ($17) and a side smashed potatoes with herb salt. ($9) It was amazing but the very small serve of wallaby was not great value for $17. When you say 'porterhouse', you usually think of a nice thick steaky chunk of meat not a half palm slice of meat. The flavours were just right and the aoili-style condiment with the meat went down very nicely with the smashed potatoes which were (I suspect) double fried to perfection. Golden, crunchy exterior with a lovely soft buttery inside. The only reason it didn't deserve a five star review in my opinion was the meat came alone. If it was a super-posh place that serves each dish alone, well, fine, be all wanky and all that but this was just an upper-class pub. It should have at least come with some kind of salad or string beans or SOMETHING. Or been bigger. 4/5.

Apart from that disappointment, my morning at Island Espresso was okay, I guess. The coffee was very good. The potato rosti side was regrettable. The chilli and coriander scrambled eggs were kind of disappointing in the chilli and coriander areas, which you'd think would be two pretty big areas. I always wonder why places advertise a food as having a particular ingredient but then they go easy on it. Surely people who can't deal with chilli and/or coriander would stay far, far away from something called "chilli and coriander eggs", right? So you really do have license to just go crazy with both. Never mind. Sorry, Island Espresso. You kinda let me down. You're so cute! But you disappointed me. I'll be okay to stop in for a takeaway coffee, though (except I do think Basket & Green up the road do a slightly better one of those, even). Sorry again. I tried.

I was just going to takeaway but it was nice and quiet and there was a ridiculous amount of bench seating, with one little corner spot calling my name, so I ordered a large flat white (drinking coffee to warm up is such a novelty for a Queenslander) and took a seat. I noted both breakfast and lunch menus in the window, with breakfast ending at 11:30am... but then I overheard the beautiful words: "we do an all-day breakfast on weekends". Guuuuuuurl, you know how I roll. The service was really sweet and welcoming, and the coffee was indeed very well made! I regret that I wasn't hungry, but I'll definitely be back to take the menu for a spin. P.S.
