Cueva De Leon is a cute little restaurant on the main road through Ft. Davis. The place is BYOB - walk across the street and pick up some cold Dos Equis to go with your meal. It has a nice patio, which we did not use because it was a bit chilly that day. I've given the place 5 stars because I had the best chile relleno I've ever had. It was a long, fresh poblano pepper stuffed with cheese and fried to a golden brown. Delicioso! I ordered a la carte and also got the green chile cheese enchilada. This was fine - not spicy enough for me, but I"m a hothead and that happens to me often. The guacamole was also 5 stars - fresh with chunks of avocado - although if you're not a red onion fan you might find these a bit overpowering. Homemade chips. Reasonable prices, especially if you order a la carte. The service was a bit slow, but most people here are on vacation and not in a big hurry. I hear they have a lunch buffet most days, but not the day we visited (Saturday). Worth a stop! read more

Food was one step below taco bueno. The service may have been the worsed I've had in years. Price was twice the value and after a miserable experience the lady who checked us out who is the same lady who seats you, waits on you (not) and helps cook actually intimidated us into leaving a tip. We ate here a couple of times over the weekend while staying at the Indian Lodge. On Friday, night we both had the Friday special which was a fish plate. All in all it was pretty decent. Quite simply, the worst Mexican food I have ever had anywhere. The buffet food was uniformly undercooked. The rice crunchy. The tortillas hard as if they'd had hot fillings stuffed into them and a bit of sauce on top without heating the tortillas themselves. The beans were hard all but impossible to chew. don't waste your time at the Old Texas Inn soda shop in Ft Davis go to Cueva De Leon instead. We came down from the observatory starving and found this lovely Mexican restaurant and were very pleased with our food and service. After we couldn't get waited on at the, "Ft. Davis Drugstore and Texas Inn" (what a joke) on 9-24-15 we walked down to Cueva De Leon as there is a shortage of places to dine in Ft. Davis. The food was okay but at least we got waited on. They did have a hot funky 4-piece country band that was playing on the patio so we sat out there where we drank beer and ate chips which more than made up for the mediocre food and service. I guess this place is not for everyone. I would say stay away. It looked busy for a small town so we figured we would give it a try. The service was slow but that was expected so no real complaint there. The food on the other hand was another story. The soft taco looks like a hard taco that sat in greese too long - we were told that is how it is done. The refried beans were cold and the nachos were super greesy. As I was finishing my meal my son pointed out the fly trap right above our table - I couldn't even finish my meal. That was disgusting and I am surprised I didn't even notice it but it was a patio and windy. My suggestion is to keep driving or make something at home. read more

Went in there although I read so many mixed reviews, because it was pretty much the only place open to get food. First of all, tables were dirty even though people seemed to have been long gone. The salsa that came with the chips tasted like canned tomatoes, was barely seasoned and started to worry us. So my wife and I visited this restaurant ten years ago and didn't care for it. We remembered the service being poor. This time around, we had limited options so we decided to give it another shot. No greeting as we entered the door. Hostess abrasively (she wasn't busy)said you can sit wherever. As the hostess/waitress drop off menus, all she said was "we're out of chicken fajitas." If I could give one half star, that's about all this place deserves. The place was about half-full and all the other tables were dirty, we waited to have a table for 5 cleaned off and we sat down. Once seated we were approached by a female server that immediately told us there was no chicken available. Okay no big deal. So then we all ordered dishes that were beef oriented. I ordered beef flautas as did my girlfriend, my parents and brother ordered cheese enchiladas and cheese quesadillas. After placing our order the lady left and never came back with any drinks, we finally talked to another waitress who brought our drinks to our table. Now the original waitress comes back and tells us that they do not have any guacamole, nor did they have any salsa and then she disappeared again. After about 10 minutes or 15 minutes, she comes back to the table and tells us that they do not have any beef flautas. So at this point, I'm in a mexican restaurant that has no chicken, no guacamole, no salsa, no tortillas and only ground beef. I kid you not this is %100 true. When I asked her if she could confirm that I am actually in a Mexican restaurant, she huffed and puffed and said that she was going to get her boss . She disappeared again. I never did see her boss , and on second thought I don't believe I ever saw her again either. We left. The best way to enjoy this restaurant is to go to another restaurant. Good luck. read more

Been there in Nov 2012. Food was really good and for those who care about quantity: Yes, it was also a lot. Me and my wife had one of the fajita combos for two persons and couldn't finish it all, we took a doggy bag with us. Service was friendly and in our case not slow at all - restaurant was medium-full at that time. Price was very affordable. read more

We had some really good enchiladas here, served with an excellent guacamole chalupa garnished with lots of lettuce, tomato, and grated cheese, as well as a serviceable beef taco. Rice and beans came with. Unfortunately they only offered refried beans (I always order whole beans if possible). We arrived just as they opened and the service was very fast, even though several other tables of guests arrived when we did. The waitress was quite friendly and fast with the tea refills. We've come here for years whenever we're in Ft. Davis (my parents used to love their buffet). I'd definitely come here again. read more

Is less than 1 star possible? Came in at 2:30 for lunch after a long hike. Told to sit any where but easily 5 tables hadn't been cleared so we sat at 1 of 2 clean unoccupied tables. Nobody came by or acknowledged us in the next 7 minutes before we left and no menus were available. Server chatted with woman at neighboring table and cashier went to next table and asked folks (with menus!) if they were ready to order. My wife and I stopped to eat here after reading "great" reviews about it on Yelp. First of all, do NOT eat here. Don't be fooled it is NOT authentic Mexican cuisine! My wife ordered their "(3) Flautas plate" and was served "taquitos" that one buys in the frozen isle of Walmart and microwaves for a quick bite. I ordered a Burrito and was given a wrap made with a tortilla which resembles a "Mission tortilla" also bought at Walmart or any grocery store. We do not recommend eating here. I've eaten here many times over many years. I unfortunately have found that their service, food quality, and general hospitality is substandard. Tonight, my family of four attempted another outing here. We were seated after a few moments and were served chips and salsa. These would be our staple of choice while waiting 30 minutes to have our order taken and then, a mind boggling additional hour to receive our order. Granted, the establishment was busy--this is a known volume for the restaurant. Apparently, planning ahead to have enough cooks (more than the 2 present tonight) and wait staff is not something the owner contemplates. Instead, after a tiring, frustrating, and weak attempt to craft Tex Mex food (or for that matter,Mexican food), we finally finished. Upon paying for this dismal rendering of food and lackadaisical service, I commented to the owner that our service was extraordinarily slow. Her retort: "Well, I only had two cooks here tonight. Maybe I should just shut down on nights like this." My response, "if you persist in this way, that will take care of itself for each night of the week." I generally give a thumbs up to most places if they try to provide even a passing level of service, food quality, hospitality and price. This establishment missed the mark on all accounts. They allow BYOB; you should be prepared with that as well as BYALOP--bring yourself a lot of patience--you'll need it. Best to just drive on to other choices. read more

Delicious lunch buffet! Filled with locals and a few lucky tourists like us. The buffet included a good salad bar, and five very tasty options on the "hot side" of the buffet. Even a freshly baked slice of cake for dessert. Aside from good food, the staff was friendly and efficient, even the local folks were eager to talk with a couple of strangers. We arrived right after they opened and were their first customers so we did not have the long wait times in other reviews. The salsa was okay but we weren't offered any refills. I had the No. 6 plate (two chicken enchiladas and a taco) - the enchiladas were okay and the taco was shredded chicken which I did not expect. My husband had the beef fajitas. He said the meat was okay. He asked for corn tortillas and they brought him some that were not cooked at all. They were out of guacamole and had limited drinks available (only tea, water, and diet coke). The water tasted like tap water. Also their credit card machine was not working which they didn't tell us until we went to pay. Luckily I had cash. We come to Ft. Davis once a year and next time we will try some place else. read more

Cueva is my fall-back. It's been in business a long time. There aren't a lot of restaurants in a census-designated population wide-spot-in-the-road like this (true - we're not even classified as a "town!") I like everything I've had. The food is consistently good. I go for their flautas a lot and chicken soft tacos too. Sopapillas are the only regular dessert on the menu. (Wish they had flan, but I've already told them that). You can BYOB from across the street at Uncle Buck's - rare in a rural TX place like this. Patio in the evening is nice with live music a couple times a week. They have a good buffet too. I agree with most of what the other reviewers have said about this place. As a local we avoid this and the other Ft. Davis restaurants when they are full of tourists. Spring Break especially. If you are a tourist, then you won't have this option. The service will be very slow here during busy times. They will really take care of you during the evenings off peak though. The food is consistently very good, and I think is the best Mexican food in the tri-county area. I am a fan of the Green Enchiladas and the Chile Rellenos. If you have someone who doesn't like Mexican food, the American food here is also quite tasty. The quantity will fill you up and the price is fair for the amount and quality of food. read more

Cueva has been slipping in my views lately. The last couple of times I've eaten there my food has been excessively greasy. Nachos in a pool of grease isn't very appetizing! Quaint little hole-in-the-wall joint. While the food is pretty good, the service leaves quite a bit to be desired. Took a while to get the food and, once we did, we had to flag someone down for anything that we needed afterward. Nobody came to refill drinks unless we asked, which was difficult to do considering the staff pretty much hung out in the kitchen. I must say that the last thing we expected to find when driving up the long windy road to this quaint little town nestled in the Davis Mtns was a very good Tex-Mex restaurant. But that jusr what we found. The chile relleno was freshly and crisply breaded. I normally enjoy a good ranchero side on my relleno but the tasty breading didn't need anything. Rice and beans were like I was eating at home. Enchiladas had a great tasting sauce with a little heat, notbthe normal gravy found in Tex-Mex. And our daughter went to left field and ordered the fried catfish, but it was to die for, fresh tasting, meaty and nicely seasoned...though the tartar sauce was packaged--not homemade!? Wish I had a pic but we were so hungry after waiting way too long for the food. That was a big drawback: slow, no very slow service, though friendly. Makes me wonder if they only had two burners on the stove. But yes, I would go back. read more

Maybe June 4th was a bad day for us to be there? Table service was poor. Other wait staff would walk past our table without helping us. They would only offer to go find our waitress whenever we needed something. She happened to also be running the cash register and seating other guests that arrived, so when she did see us, she would say she would be right with us but forget. Drink refills took over several long minutes. Chips and salsa were okay. The salsa should have been heated and it would taste better than just a cold tomato based salsa. No liquor license, but they said you could walk across the street to the liquor store and bring your own beer. We were hungry and in a hurry so we decided on the buffet. The following items are from the steam table. Beef fajitas were good, only a few pieces of steak were chewy. Chicken fajitas were better than the beef. The onions and bell pepper in the fajita meat were not cooked long enough on the griddle to be translucent, instead the vegetables were firm as they only sweated on their griddle. The cheese enchiladas on Saturday night's buffet were simply soggy corn tortillas the cook had folded over, covered with red or green chile sauce and then cheese. (No cheese rolled up inside the rolled up tortilla). The chile rellenos were good. The meal did end with dessert (included on the buffet) of a warm apple filling rolled up in soft flour tortillas and cinnamon sprinkled on top. read more

After seating ourselves, the service was very slow. Eventually, we ordered. The chips tasted a little stale and the salsa was spicy. My husband had a combo plate with an enchilada and chile relleno, which he enjoyed. Our kids had flautas, which they also enjoyed, I had beef fajitas, which were tough and not very flavorful. The worst part was my fajitas were brought out about 10 minutes after the rest of my party received their food. Even then, I didn't receive any tortillas and had to wait another 5 minutes for those- by then, my family was finishing up their meals. Awkward. Their rice was unique and tasty. It wasn't red/orange colored like you see at other Mexican restaurants. It was more of a golden color with corn mixed in and was delicious.
