The only way in or out is on the north side, and if you're exiting, the path you have to walk can only fit people single file, unless someone wants to take the chance and tip-toe the blue safety line (definitely do not recommend). Otherwise, the station is reasonably clean. A pressure washing wouldn't really hurt, but there is no trash or 'other' waste to be found. There is a large cover that extends over the platform and part of the tracks to offer protection from the elements, and areas with electric heaters for those winter months. There are also a handful of benches and ample signage with arrival times. Some other features of this station include an up escalator, an elevator free of foul smells (only a little chlorine), a bike rike, and a large mural. The station also appears to be staffed during peak hours. Finally, I appreciate that the station is very well lit at night. Thus, Granville is not my favorite stop on the red line due to its size. However, with the worst thing being a slight queue to exit, Granville gets an A-OK in my book.

However, as others have noted, the platform is very narrow, and unlike other nearby stations (such as Thorndale or Wilson), Granville has only one entrance and exit, which is on the north side of the platform. This results in a two-way bottleneck of people entering and exiting the station. Unfortunately this problem has become much worse since last May, when the station's lone escalator was taken out of service for repairs. This has forced both entering and exiting passengers to use the same narrow stairwell. Repairs to the escalator were originally promised to be finished by July, then the contractor pushed the date back to end of August. When August came and went, the contractor once again changed the completion date to mid-September. Mid-September came and went, and the contractor changed the completion date yet again to Oct. 31, 2023 (...beginning to see a pattern here?) It's now Nov 8th and the sign shows November 15, 2023 as the completion date, but nobody around here is holding their breath. You get used to this sort of nonsense living in a place like Chicago (who wants to make a bet that the project won't be done by next Wednesday as promised? I'll offer generous odds). CTA has posted signage explaining why their escalators need repairs and refurbishment, and I get it. However, the signage only explains why the repairs need to be made, it does not explain why the project has taken so long to complete and why the contractor has continually pushed back their own forecasted completion date. I'm sure the contractor will offer up some lame excuse that they had to order a special part from Taiwan which is taking months to be shipped in. I don't mind the length of time that the repairs are taking, what I do mind is that the contractor continually dangles and then revises their project completion date. Alas, this is what happens when you use union labor. There are no consequences for half-assing the job as the union will protect its members time and time again for missing deadlines which would land any private sector worker into serious trouble. You can't blame the CTA though, because if they were to hire a non-union outfit, a bunch of those overpaid union guys would be picketing outside all the CTA stations with that giant inflatable rat. So to avoid this, they just give in. This is your "Welcome to Chicago" moment, folks. The same exact thing happened at O'Hare Airport when the ATS trains were taken offline back in 2019. The project was originally supposed to take just eight months, but the contractor kept continually pushing back the completion date, and it took almost three years before the ATS trains were back up and running. And they pathetically tried to use the pandemic as the excuse for the delays, when in fact the delays began occurring long before the pandemic or lockdowns. Sheesh. No wonder why Jack and Bobby Kennedy hated unions so much.

The tile matches the colors in the city flag and the red stripes are a cue that this is indeed the Red Line. The font and faint skyline add wonderful touches. What's bad: Platform floors are dirty and oily looking. "This floor looks clean enough to eat off of!" had never been said here, except maybe ironically. What's silly: You're in Chicago on Chicago street heading down into Chicago station. That's a whole lot of Chicago! Chicago, Chicago, that twaddlin', er toddlin', train... Do Doo Doo Doo! I didn't encounter excessive dirt or grime, and the station smelled lightly of disinfectant/cleaner. + While the vibe on Saturday morning may not be indicative of all days and times, I felt no safety or security concerns. Thus, while I may not use Linden very often, it does a fine job as far as train stations go. Having screens on the platform so passengers know how long to wait is all it would take to go from a four to a five.

Grand station was the closest to the hotel where we stayed, so we often went to this one whenever we traveled to further neighborhoods in the city. It's a busy station and very reminiscent of the NYC subway.

The CTA in Chicago in general is pretty good for getting around, especially to and from the airport…read morein my opinion. I think it's slightly nicer than the NYC subway, but not by much. The platforms really look similar, and are pretty easy to navigate. There is usually a staff member in the help booth and they're pretty nice if you're confused (I had to ask one of them a question the first time I rode the CTA). Overall, I think the number of stops/lines available is pretty good; it's not quite as good as NYC or other countries e.g. Seoul, SK -- but if you're staying downtown for instance, you can get around pretty easily and to/from the airport with minimal walking to get to a nearby station and either connect to or go direct to the airport. I'm very glad the CTA is available as an option for visitors and folks who live here since parking is paid almost everywhere, and definitely limited (especially downtown!).

We were headed to Chicago Music Exchange on N Lincoln. Our route was Cermak-McCormick to Clark/Lake, where we transferred to the Brown line for the Paulina train stop. The station gets crowded! We were there midday on Tuesday on one of the hottest days in June. Fortunately, the signage was clear and we got to the correct platform. Plus the wait for the train wasn't long. Chicago has a great public transportation train system.

Riding the PSL train…read more.. Gotta love the advertisement as I'm traveling in Chicago from the West loop area for matcha yes and I'm SO lucky to have Terry K and Kyra K for the navigation as it's usually on me to do so it was so relaxing getting around. We did get to Chicago Station riding the 66 bus with a short walk but as this will take us to our destination of the South Loop area. I've said it before the CTA system very much reminds me of Japan rail as well very similar in accessibility and convenience of use with lots of signage and reminder of each stop. Thank you!

Another CTA station is on Chicago Avenue. It has some good bus options around here. Kind of a bad…read moreatmosphere with all the homeless people but still not among the worst. Feels safer than many other stations but that's not saying a lot. There's a few fast food places and stores. It has a kind of busy location at Chicago Avenue and Franklin Street with all the commuters coming. It serves the Brown and Purple Lines. This is between the Merchandise Mart and Sedgwick stations. Inside there's kind of a bad odor and there's a few sketchy people but that's typical stuff around. There's a few bus stops that are located conveniently close by here. Has shopping around the area. It has some fast food like Dunkin, some grocery stores like Wal-Mart, but nothing any good. This seems to be mostly safe.

West loop... Going…read moreto have breakfast at Lou Mitchell's since it's at the beginning of Route 66 and is walking distance from here the station that I was surprised to see a ramp as I exited the train versus a bunch of stairs but don't get me wrong there are stairs but elevator as well it's just the simple convenience is always appreciated. CTA has a station at Clinton. It provides convenient access to downtown. Lots of ways to get around…read morefrom here. Kind of clean compared to others so that's good. There's access to plenty of other trains. Best thing is the convenience. It serves the Green and Pink Lines. The station is pretty clean for the most part. Above ground so it has the cleaner air. This is also located next to Ogilvie Transportation Center, so you can get on Metra and change systems. Has good things about it. It's one of the better stations. There's usually trains coming pretty often weekdays and even weekends.

I only recommend this stop if you're getting here NOT by car. I found parking around this area to be an absolute nightmare because most of the side streets are permit, and street cleaning was happening. The biggest perk is that it's right next to Khepri Cafe! :)
