I parked and went over to see why this station looked completely different from others. This station is the station that stops with in walking distance from the zoo so they zooed it up. The walkway has a cool sculpture of a mama and papa loin with a lion cub playing with papas tail. Each platform has a rock like structure with murals of wild animals in there natural habitat. Overall I thought this station was very cool and it seemed like something from a theme park right on a busy commuter suburban station.

The Western Avenue station is my favorite because it is on a boulevard and that's a pretty tough location to beat! This station seems to get quite a bit of light on sunnier days. I think it has a more comfortable feel to it than the Kedzie and Ashland stations. Those stations feel "tucked away" to me - - and not in a cozy-feel type of way. This station has the usual escalator/stairways along with an elevator. I deducted a star because that elevator was out - of - order for about a month last year. Also, it was out another time and no one bothered to put a sign on the platform elevator door--wasted minutes waiting for an elevator that was not working! I have since found out that you can sign up for alerts regarding the elevators--it's nice to know in advance if they aren't working. The first couple of times that I added money to my CTA card on the Ventra vending machines, I asked the CTA attendants for assistance. Both times they were very kind and did not make me feel like I was bothering them. Sometimes people in this sort of job can do that! Luckily, not the case here. They were pleasant, helpful and willing to assist. There is a Dunkin Donuts in this station, which could be a plus, however, according to the current reviews on this DD Yelp business page, it could also be a disappointment. There are connections to four bus routes at this station : #35 (31st/35th Street), #39 (Pershing Road), #50 (Damen Avenue) and #62 (Archer Avenue). I was headed to the southeast side of Chicago from O'Hare airport. Anybody from Chicago knows the…read moredrive will be at least 2 hrs or more during rush hour. So I hopped on the blue line. There are a couple of machines that take cash or card for payment. New cards are $5. To enter you place your card on the sensor and it allows to let the turnstile open for you. I was traveling to Clark/Lake street, which happens to be a popular station. At first, I was a bit worried that my mid size suitcase may cause a hamper and be in the way, but it was just fine. The train was a nice size so I wasn't uncomfortable. Before each stop an announcement is made to name the stop location and the side of the train to exit. Lake street happens to be a popular stop so there was a mass exit of riders. This stop had escalators but the last place I had to exit was a stairway. Good thing I like going to the gym. Overall, a great experience.

I myself have dealt with two different CTA personnels at this station, both of which were very…read morerude. My friend had a question about the new Ventra cards and did not understand how to use it. The CTA lady behind the glass literally screams telling her to call the number on the back. The CTA personnel proceeds to say her job is to monitor the station, not answer questions. The worker looks at me and begins to ask, why am I standing there and not helping my friend. I told the worker if she can calm down and be professional. I must have said something wrong because she slammed the glass and started pouting in her chair like a child. The second incident occurred when I was running late to my doctors appointment and I was stopped by a CTA worker. I scanned my card and ran through the turnstiles to catch my train that was arriving at the station. The worker came out from the booth to stop me from going up the escalator. He claims to have seen me use a "stolen" card and wanted to search me. I told him that I did not have time for this. As I continued to walk past him, he called for backup. After waiting 45 minutes for CTA security to come and do a search, I was on my way. Thanks CTA! I over pay for 30 minute waits for buses, poor customer service, and illegal searches.

In a combination of unlucky events leading to my phone getting stolen, the perp was never found. Took the police an hour and a half to get there, even if they took 15 minutes he would've still been in the area, but AN HOUR AND A HALF? A year later still no resolution. Random delays, cleaner used on trains smells like puke, doors stop working causing the CTA personnel to have to pry them open, at least there's not many homeless people on this line panhandling. No wonder you see everyone with glazed over eyes on the train, not bothering to pay attention to anything. They're used to this incompetent madness as if they're POWs.
