Empire Wine and Liquor

Empire Wine and Liquor

Very weird to find high-end local craft brews in the midst of Bollywood…read more Hidden next to Staples and a Dollar Tree in an otherwise nondescript strip mall is a treasure trove of amazing Connecticut beers. Even the name Empire Wine and Liquor is somewhat of a misnomer; while it definitely does stock wine and liquor, offerings are undistinguishable from its competitors - anyone can buy Barefoot moscato or Captain Morgan's rum anywhere. Despite this, and the very unusual Indian/Bollywood music playing at a solid tilt over the air, the powers-that-be made the great decision to stock some terrific local brews in the beer fridges - this is the eighteen-bucks-a-four-pack level of brew. These include limited releases such as the Two Juicy Unfiltered Double IPA from Two Roads Brewing Company (Stratford, CT), which can hold it's own against its more renowned Massachusetts or Maine competitors. Though the following is an unfounded assumption, it seems unlikely that the cashier on my particular Sunday morning could describe the many beers to me; I wonder who makes the beer sourcing decisions at Empire?

Empire has a fairly varied and impressive selection (particularly of wines and whiskeys), but the…read morepositives end there. First of all, it's notably more expensive than its myriad local competitors. More to the point, though, on each of the multiple occasions that I've been there, the cashier (who I believe is also the owner) has been unhelpful at best and actively hostile at worst. On one occasion he berated me for making him stay late when I was there a full half hour before closing time and told me that I shouldn't come if I didn't know what I wanted ahead of time. Every time I've visited the store he's made me feel uncomfortable, and as such he'll be getting what he wanted, as I won't be coming back.

This is a great store in Cheshire run by a friendly family…read more This is my first time at this store location and everyone here is so cool and friendly. I sampled the -196 Beam Vodka Seltzer by Suntory. It's a wonderful tasting product w fresh fruit not artificial. originated in Japan and is here now. Only 2 grams of sugar and has 6% alcohol volume. You need to try it if you haven't yet. Wonderful product to take the beach or pool area. Their selection of beer is very impressive. They have the regulars, along with a lot of micros. Plenty of variety for any of your likes. The store itself is rather large with a good selection of beer, wine and spirits. Prices are competitive. They have Frank who does tastings in the store who can help you find something or answer questions. Plenty of parking available.

I was pleasantly surprised on the wine selection in this "big box" package store. Nice balance of…read moremain stream wine brand vs small lesser known brands represented by Skurnik and T Edwards, etc in CT. Pricing right on point. Clean and organized more so than Sav-rite in north haven. If you had to decide between the two stores, take the ride to Cheshire and frequent this place. They go the extra mile and present the customer with something more appreciative than what most other big box liquor stores can replicate. Would like to see more natural wines in the selection but that's just my preference and not one of the masses more one of Cheshire. I'll be back.
