After getting into the store, I walked over to the beer section. Nice neon pink sign above the Guinness, 8 pack of cans for $15.99. I got to the register and the guy scans it and says $18... Now I'm not a math wizard BUT I know that the amount didn't sound right. I looked up and noticed the $15.99 that it was supposed to be rang up at $16.17. I said ummm the sign says $15.99. The cashier responds yea but there's sales tax and bottle deposit. I said I get that BUT the subtotal should say $15.99. He then goes on to this long drawn out story that they do that at the register so the people paying cash don't need to bring 81 cents with them and they don't have to make change for someone that pays them $18 in cash. I paid, and was not even offered a receipt. Had I remembered Connecticut Consumer Commodities Law (CGS Sec. 21a-79) at the time, I'd have asked to speak to the owner. That specific statue is known as the "Get it for free" section: Get it for Free: If an electronic checkout scanner rings up a consumer commodity at a higher price than the posted shelf price, you are entitled to one instance of that item completely free of charge, up to a value of $20. I was argued with, told it was easier for them to not have to make change and the only "fix" was the cashier saying "oh yea I really need to change that sign". While it doesn't seem like a bid deal (and I was on a break from my job so I wasn't going to stand there to argue over ~20 cents), it actually is. This business is in direct violation of CT laws. I've already reported it to CT Liquor control agency since this amounts to fraud.

Customer service is horrible! I've been a customer for 10 years and this is the end. Bought a…read morebottle of bourbon and did not notice twist cap was unsealed. Did not want to risk drinking so asked for a replacement. They asked if I drank from the bottle as they noticed it was slightly less full than another bottle on shelf. Of course I had not because it was opened by someone else (why would I want to replace a bottle unless there was something wrong with it). I asked all 3 employees if they would drink from the bottle and you can imagine their reaction (same as mine when I discovered the unsealed cap). They resisted calling the manager until I insisted, and since their payment system is so outdated they were not able to bring up my $100+ purchase, so to take the easy way out the manager refused a replacement. Of course the charge is on my credit card... There are several package stores in the vicinity so I will share my BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE with as many people as possible.

Even the name Empire Wine and Liquor is somewhat of a misnomer; while it definitely does stock wine and liquor, offerings are undistinguishable from its competitors - anyone can buy Barefoot moscato or Captain Morgan's rum anywhere. Despite this, and the very unusual Indian/Bollywood music playing at a solid tilt over the air, the powers-that-be made the great decision to stock some terrific local brews in the beer fridges - this is the eighteen-bucks-a-four-pack level of brew. These include limited releases such as the Two Juicy Unfiltered Double IPA from Two Roads Brewing Company (Stratford, CT), which can hold it's own against its more renowned Massachusetts or Maine competitors. Though the following is an unfounded assumption, it seems unlikely that the cashier on my particular Sunday morning could describe the many beers to me; I wonder who makes the beer sourcing decisions at Empire?

Every time I've visited the store he's made me feel uncomfortable, and as such he'll be getting what he wanted, as I won't be coming back.

What sets this one apart is Ron and Donna. They have a great selection of beers and wines and are alway trying new products and programs from tasting to gift purchases. Never any issue or resistance, That is not true to with establishments that have turned their noses up at our request. I see them at local events and they are truly local.
