A few weird experiences here with the tastings on Saturday. They seem to really cater to regulars who are buying cases at a time. I don't blame them, but I don't always feel super welcome here. I think people who act super bitchy get the best service there. Sounds odd..but true. Anyone who loves wine or is even just curious about it should stop by Mt Carmel wine. Whether you are a hard-core oenophile or just enjoy a glass of good, reasonably-priced wine with your meals, you are going to love this family-owned store. First of all, you can ask for a recommendation with confidence. This is not a place where they are going to push a bottle out of your price range and/or make you feel back in first grade if you don't speak the wine lingo. Just tell whoever is helping you how much you would like to spend, and what you like/have liked in the past. You would be surprised by the results. If, on the other hand, you are already hooked, this is one of the few retail stores in the country were you will be able to find not only recent vintages of great wines at different price points, but also cellared ones. And you don't need to break the bank to taste -for instance- an aged Bordeaux with someone knowledgeable to guide you. Secondly, there is a number of wines at truly discounted prices each week. Sign up to the newsletter to be updated on the "closeouts" (I recently bought a case of a very nice Montepulciano d'Abruzzo at $ 3.99 a bottle, and a spectacular 1995 Gloria Ferrer Carneros Cuve for 24.99). Finally, the free tastings on Saturday are refreshingly varied, both in terms of wine regions and price range (from young Chianti Classico, to aged Burgundy, to single vineyard Pinot Noir from Oregon). This wine store specializes in French wine. They have excellent selections from all French regions, in all price ranges. They definitely have some fine and rare wines - out of my price range and knowledge zone! But this expertise spills over into their selection of value wines - and here they have some real bargains from all over the world, but particularly from Europe. As you walk in there are bins with wines that are extraordinary bargains - very drinkable and food-friendly for under $10 - a delight! They also have good values from French wine regions - a broad selection of wines under $15, and even more under $20 - often these are excellent examples of their region, but not necessarily from widely known vineyards. Because they select only after tasting, you have a good chance of getting something you love... or that someone else will! The staff are helpful and extremely knowledgeable (or will connect you with the most knowledgeable staff person to answer your question). Their tastings can help you decide if a wine suits your taste, or introduce you to something new. This isn't an all-purpose wine store, so if you're looking for a large selection of California Zinfandels, this isn't the place. But I know no better outlet for French wine in the area and I trust no one more than these guys to deliver wine values that don't disappoint. read more

It's the only place that I buy wine anymore. When I go to dinners I love being able to ask the people at the store exactly what I should get based on the food that we're having that night. They are always helpful and I have gotten great reviews on bottles under $20 because they know exactly what they're talking about and they know how to pair food and wine together. read more

What a great wine store. Looks like nice inside and out, making you think the prices would be high. This is not so, and they even offer wine from some Connecticut vineyards and wineries. This family-owned store is a real gem, and we are lucky to have it in our community. They are always ready to offer a recommendation, and they never talk down to clients or try to push a bottle out of your price range; they go out of their way to understand what you like (even if, like me, you are not always adept at articulating it properly!) and find you the best choice at that price point. Eric gives especially thoughtful recommendations, and if you are a serious oenophile, Bob Feinn is the shoreline's unrivaled resource for everything French! In fact, this is one of the few places in the area with truly exquisite and hard-to-find imports (some even at a reasonable price!) If you 'like' them on Facebook or sign up for their email newsletter, you can keep up on their closeouts and wine tastings, which occur weekly; they get reps from some great producers and it's an opportunity to taste something you might not normally try.
