Don't be fooled! This is NOT an old blue haired, ag wealthy, Republican women's social spot! Not…read moresaying that you won't see this demo represented dining here, but this is actually a very competent, professionally run restaurant. It is staffed by the crème de la crème of Salinas Valley matrons volunteering in the professional chef directed kitchen, as well as being your servers. Not to drop names but the last time I was there, a member of the Salinas City Council who is a force with whom to be reckoned in the ag industry, and a philanthropist for our local hospitals was serving my table!!!! And, she was very, very good!
Food? Go to the website and you'll see a really awesome menu that changes monthly to reflect the seasonal produce available. As expected for our valley, it is a veg forward menu which is much appreciated. There is always one vegetarian dish that is offered. Besides the entrees, which are amply sized and run about $20, there are a selection of familiar sandwiches, two fresh house made soups, and main dish salads with house made dressings (YAY and thank you for making your own dressings!). You can also order a 1/2 sandwich and salad or soup. Honestly, this is a full-service restaurant with excellent tasty food! I've had their version of Chicken Cordon Bleu, the Reuben sandwich, the Chicken Apple Brie Salad with house made Ranch, and the Monte Cristo sandwich (great rendition!). I've been perfectly delighted with everything put in front of me. While I always prefer a chicken thigh to a breast, I've never had a dust-dry chicken breast. Sides are usually about $7-$10, and desserts are $10. The salad greens are ALWAYS hand selected, and torn, and NEVER from a damn food service bag. Soups are delicious! I always get soup, an entree, and I have to get dessert as it is ALWAYS a taste sensation.
HOT TIP: Help save the planet one take-out container at a time! Take your own leakproof containers in a re-useable bag. I eat my soup, and my dessert, and take home a portion of the entree for a later meal. When you take your own containers, the leftovers will keep fresher, and won't leak all over your clothes and your car. You'll be a happier camper and feel good about your choice!
Service? As mentioned, the Valley's doyennes are your servers. Sometimes they mess up, but corrections are made quickly and with grace. For fox sake, folks, be kind to servers in general, but these servers are volunteers! Chat'em up if you're not from here and you'll usually get some awesome history and stories about our valley.
Ambiance? C'mon, man! This is the childhood home of JohnSteinbeck! It's beautifully restored to that period with all sorts of photographs on the walls. Any history or literature buff will be thrilled to pieces to be taken here! I've lived here over 30 years, and I still learn things every day about this extraordinary area! WARNING: this is not a place that can accommodate folks unable to climb about 15 stairs.
This is a great place to take the older relatives, but it's also a great place for a quiet, delicious lunch at which to actually talk to your companion. Go here NOW! You will be happy!
