First things first, do not bother consulting with the nurses here. You're better off just making an appointment. If you are a walk-in, the front desk will most likely try to direct you to them as the doctors are almost always booked with appointments, and the nurses are supposed to give you medical advice if you have any questions, concerns, or symptoms. I have made this mistake twice; the first time, a few years ago, I came in because I had been coughing up blood all morning and I was in consistent pain. The nurse (I wish I had written down her name, not sure if she still works there) who I spoke to was extremely condescending, not only telling me that I was overreacting and coughing up blood is rarely as bad as it seems, but she also did not offer any significant advice and essentially told me to wait it out and did not write me a note, so I still had to go to class. I made an appointment with a doctor here shortly after and had a chest x-ray and lab work done (that I had to pay for, which surprised me, as I was under the impression that it too would be included in tuition and they also did not accept my insurance, mind you), and it turned out I had a severe upper respiratory infection. The second time I made the same mistake was just this week, and it is the reason I am writing this review. I walked-in two days ago and opted to see a nurse since it was short notice, my symptoms were sudden, and I was once again in pain. I was greeted by a nurse named Nicki. I have sores all over my tongue, mouth, and throat, and have had a fever and muscle aches all week, and when I explained this to her, she looked inside my mouth and agreed that my throat looked "funky" and I had some "white spots that I can't quite explain" (her words). Despite this, she proceeded to tell me that it was viral, it did NOT look like strep throat, and I just needed to wait it out. Sound familiar? Hydration, rest, chicken soup. She said to ONLY come back if I developed "white fur" in my throat, which would signify strep. No note. Did not even recommend that I get a strep test just to confirm. Here I am, two days later, only having returned to this place because I booked an appointment in advance and I did not want to have to wait hours in urgent care or go to my primary care physician. My symptoms got worse since my last visit. I saw Dr. Fassbender (who I recommend, she has helped me more than once and is very kind) and she said I should get lab work done: a throat swab and a blood test to check for both strep and mono. I did so and waited an hour for the results, and I tested positive for strep throat. Exactly what the nurse told me I did not have. You have to understand how frustrated this made me, as I could have started the antibiotics two days prior and started improving instead of feeling worse and missing more classes. Dr. Fassbender prescribed me penicillin and that was that. Speaking to the doctors isn't always perfect, however, as I have had rude ones as well. Beyond my own experiences, one of my best friends was hunched over and crying from period cramps that were unusually bad and so I walked with her to the health center and once again the nurses were condescending and minimized her symptoms and pain, suggesting that she should just get used to it and it was part of being a woman. She saw a doctor later on and started birth control to remedy the problem. I've also had friends tell me that the psychological area is rather dismissive and unhelpful. Take from that what you will. Overall, I'd recommend just seeking medical help off campus, if you can. If you do not have insurance, this place can be a free way to help with minor problems or illnesses, but if you suspect you have a problem that might need medication, x-rays, or something more substantial in order to fix, it's going to be a hassle and some of the staff might make things worse. Always make an appointment in advance to see one of the doctors, don't bother with the nurses. If you need to cancel the appointment, do so far in advance or they'll use it as an excuse to get some money out of you. Stay on top of them about giving you a note if you need to miss class. With this being one of the many things you pay for alongside your tuition, it's a pretty handy resource. I've gone here for everything from girly check-ups to stitches. I've had physicals, talked with their nutritionist, blood and other lab tests, X-rays, and EKGs and paid minimal fees for each if anything at all. My experiences here have been generally positive. In the situation where I needed stitches after falling on campus, I called them up, told them I busted open my knee and that I was on my way over. I get there, the receptionists have the doors open and ready for me to get to Triage, where they look it over, have me fill out paperwork, get me into a room that looked like it was ready for surgery and the doctor sewed me up, wrote me a prescription for Vicodin, and sent me on my way. You know what the whole affair cost me? $0.80 for the Vicodin (which never got used anyway). No charge for the stitches. It's recommended that you sign up for FamilyPACT (which is free for students) when you use the Health Center. At the very least, it allows you to get prescriptions for free at select pharmacies and ALL Targets. REALLY useful. The Health Center also has chiropractors and acupuncturists ($5/visit each). I've only used the chiropractor, and while they are pretty thorough in asking what might be causing pain, they mostly just crack your joints and tell you to come back next week. The Center recently started charging a $20 fee for missing an appointment, particularly without notifying them. So don't just schedule to see a doctor and don't come. Since the Health Center is often in high demand, someone could have easily been fitted into that time slot. read more

Tried to seek psychological support and counseling services here, but they failed me. First attempt to call, the person on the psychological support services line was very supportive and let me talk out my problems. Then she got my contacted information so someone else can call me the next day to arrange an appointment (how come the same person cannot also make the appointment?). Well anyways I never got a call back and I called the following week to ask if I would ever get a call back. The person on the line apologized and took my information again. He told me someone will follow up with me the next day to set up an appointment. Well, I waited a weekend and today is Monday. I finally got a call back and the guy on the phone said I was suppose to call and arrange the appointment myself. In short, the first two people I talked to were supposedly able to set up the appointment based off what this person said and both of them also told me someone else would follow up with me to schedule the appointment. He didn't even apologize for the confusion. I called back again, and the girl on the phone was trying to clarify if I was a current student. My graduation date is Spring 2015, but I am not taking classes as of now since I am finished with all my classes. So she just said I don't qualify and...that's it. No recommendations, nothing. Hopefully someone from the center is reading this: it is difficult for people with psychological distress to make the effort to seek help. This is why when their attempts fail, they just choose to hurt themself, others, or commit suicide. I am not In that mindset but I worry for those who are. read more

Thank GOD I have health insurance. I feel SO SORRY for everyone who uses the SHCC. I was in SEVERE pain and was told I would wait 10 minutes. 40 MINUTES LATER, a nurse calls me back, takes my vitals and says I need to breathe deep. I can't breathe, darling, that's why I am here, not at Kaiser. They send me to another nurse who tells the doc about me and the doctor says IN CLEAR EARSHOT of me that she'd rather NOT see me and is too busy. I CAN'T BREATHE! No one offered an ambulance or oxygen. I can't move. But you're too busy diagnosing STDs and yeast infections to care about my LIFE! I am a grad student in my 30s,not some whiny freshman who doesn't want to take a midterm. I actually teach on this campus too. Disgusting. Oh, "walk ins" are a joke. Don't bother. read more

These people are the WORST. I needed support when a family member was dying. I had my appointment cancelled and got charged $20. Meanwhile, someone else got the appointment I payed for. Called them and got nothing but mouth. I talked to the head of the extortion ring and instead of help, I got talked down to. The lady thought she was above reproach because of her title and told me as much. When I finally made an appointment, the counselor turned me away saying I should seek help elsewhere (but not before making an appointment for me that I NEVER WANTED NOR ASKED for some group therapy crap I had already voiced my disapproval of when she suggested it. I found out 3 months later that I missed the appointment I NEVER WANTED NOR MADE and was charged another $20 for it. I wish my tuition wasn't going to this place because they made my anxiety and stress worse from a rather obvious method of screwing students out of their money. Attending CSUF I decide to check out the Health center since we are obligated to pay this each semester. However the times that I have used, I have been very disappointed in scheduling appointments,being misdiagnosed, and most of the doctors don't seem to want to help you in any way. I went recently because I had symptoms of UTI and I schedule my appointment . Everything was going smoothly but as soon as I need the medication, it turns out that it is not available in the pharmacy anymore due to rising costs and that I had to go to an outside pharmacy such as Walgreens, CVS, Walmart,etc to get it. I found that inconvenient because prescription drugs are expensive once you buy it somewhere else and I feel sorry for those that have to depend on the health center for these services.The doctor didn't seem to care too much about what I was going through and just told me to buy the medication and that I should go back to KAISER to do the rest of the tests :( Not a big fan of Kaiser but at least I have Kaiser Permanente to receive my medication or I could go south of the border to get it myself for much affordable prices(Highly recommend this). Otherwise don't waste your time with the health center. It is no longer beneficial and find it worthless to be around since they can't give you antibiotics to cure whatever infection you got. Came here for a bad skin burn/infection. I was treated very well by staff and Dr. Do was a very caring and helpful doctor. 2 weeks later and I almost 100%. I came during the summer so the waits were no longer than 10 minutes. Basic consults are free, and I even caught up on my tetanus shot for free. I was skeptical because of the reviews I saw here ( and I live off of Yelp reviews) but I was in pain and those reviews are old, so why not?, Take it from a normal student that this place is great. -1 star because their signage is not very good inside (How do you get back to the main entrance!!?) read more

I called the crisis phone number after hours and I was going through quite a lot! So I was crying and expressing myself about the losses I had endured as related to over the past few years that gave been mounting up. I was CUTT OFF AND INTERRUPTED by the phone associate whos job it is to listen and be present and she told me "you cannot call here to vent that its not what we do here" and was very abrupt. So then i asked this girl ERIN well then what am I supposed to talk about, please inform me how I am supposed to get help. She refused to help me understand their process for "helping people" offering "brief support" over the phone. And I said I dont think that is appropriate if I am the one in crisis i am not a cookie cutter human being you cannot tell someone how to express their emotions when they are in crisis and that is not how it works if you are in a helping profession. She was completely silent and seemed to be typing something so i asked her if she was typing and it was odd that she didnt allow me to speak nor was she even saying anything to me to help me cope. So i told her i would like to speak to someone else who could help me. And then she yelled at me "no i will not transfer you" so i hung up and called again. If i had been suicidal I probably wouldve hurt myself with this womans "help" because she made me feel so much worse, utterly alone, and disrespected as a human being. What a jerk! Obviously she needs to do a completely different job bc she has no heart. I called back and Colline was extremely helpful and allowed me to talk trhough my emotions for at least 30 minutes and also provided me some options for coping. Looking back 3 months ago, I called not knowing it was a crisis hotline because i had so many classes I could never seem to call during hours of operation. The girl on the phone line told me she could help me find my previous provider since my normal clinic closed down due to covid and she said that she would relay my question to the wellness office and that they could definitely help me find my doctor so i could keep seeing him but when I finally called the office, the office staff said no one could have told me that they could find him using his NPI number because it isnt possible to locate a doctor. The girl had also promised to inform the office to call me and set up and appointment . No one ever did and this was Back in may, 2021. So it wasnt until August that i was able to get an appointment. If youre suicidal (which I am not) , going through crisis, or have other mental health needs i would not call the hotline number. Those people are extremely incompetent. read more

I made an appointment to come during vacations time. I live in Riverside, the traffic was so bad, I called them to let them know I will be late, 10 minutes. I was late 11 minutes, that charged me with $20.00 dollars for no showing. I am so upset, they could it helped if they want it, but they did not.. I cannot believe it specially when they do not have a lot of clients at this time. But it is better to get $20.00 dollars from cancellations then $5.00 consultation. read more

The SHCC has saved my butt more times than you will ever know. And since it was covered through my tuition, I wasted no time in taking advantage of it. The staff is really nice and compassionate. I've gone in for UTIs (unfortunately, so often some of the staff remembered me when I came back for recurring infections) the Family PACT plan for birth control, yeast infections, and STD testing. Everyone was patient, courteous, and (as I hope they would) treated me like an adult. The biggest downside is that because of how many appointments are made throughout the semester, you have to schedule an appointment weeks, sometimes even months in advance. Fortunately, for an emergency that needs to be taken care of ASAP, like a UTI, they're good about seeing you and helping you out. But I had to be vigilant when it came to setting up an appointment to renew my Family PACT plan to get refills on birth control. read more

The only positive review I would give is for the physical therapy center. Absolutely awesome! Honestly the appointments only last 15 minutes. If you have any extra questions then you have to make another appointment. One appointment per subject. Hence, I hurt my foot and my head falling down. During my appointment the doctor could only work with one injury. It's pretty ridiculous. Zero understanding for anyone that does any athletics. My doctor told me that I was over weight because my BMI was above average. Well maybe because I work out 6-8 hours a day due to my sport. Which I explained. I also tried the counseling services once and all they did was say I needed to go else where because they pretty much didn't have time for me. My counselor was pretty unprofessional with the questions he asked as well. read more

This is for the health center not counseling services... I transferred units to CSUF from Palomar College, Fullerton College and APU. The instructors are pretty good and there are tons of resources on campus, including clubs if you're into that. The TSA is beautiful, although I don't spend time there as I commute. The administration should be ashamed of themselves for the grotesque, lack of cleanliness both in the bathrooms and classrooms (some bathrooms are dirtier than others). The school being a state facility isn't an excuse for surfaces not to be disinfected. Conversely, students need to be more respectful and not be slobby either. My issue is with the health center though. While they offer many services at an affordable cost, their polices are preposterous. The no-show fee is a joke, it's unnecessarily stringent and inflexible considering life happens. And, they always have a line out of the door so penalizing a student for needing to cancel is absurd when I'm sure they could fill the spot quickly. They just want additional funds, it's shystie! With all that said, I am very happy and proud to be at CSUF. Note: if you need to cancel, do so with plenty of notice and get names for everyone you speak to and HOLD them accountable. I canceled because my classes were canceled that day and I live 60 miles from campus. The operator assured me that I wouldn't be charged a late fee. Well, she lied and despite my clear effort, my appeal was denied. So, beware and vigilent with the employees you speak to and take notes for any "issue". Again, other than that, PT was a very positive experience (Nathan Longcrier rocks!) and my overall experience has also been great. There are pros and con's everywhere. :-) I'm an older student; however, if you want to be involved in typical college life you could find a way. They were SO unhelpful, SO lazy, and SO rude. They made it seem like I was burdening them with my sickness. I went in twice in one week and both times they refused to give me the antibiotics that I needed. I went elsewhere and was told that I had Bronchitis, and if I had waited even a few more days to get checked out I was at risk for developing pneumonia. I tried telling the doctors at the Health Center the previous week that I had had bronchitis before and that I felt I needed antibiotics to make my deep painful cough go away, and the doctor straight up said to me, "Welp, no antibiotics for you!" So rude and so unprofessional. Thanks to the Health Center I was days away from pneumonia. Never going back. read more

I will continue coming here until I graduate. I no longer have health insurance and didn't know where else to go for treatment. I prefer the SHCC over any general practitioner's office I've been to. Dr. Richard Boucher is the best. I have anxiety about medical visits, but he made me feel so much more comfortable! Lizeth Broadway, the psychiatrist, is good too. I have also used the counseling services and would recommend them to anyone. Additionally, the pharmacy has medications for an actual decent price. Thank you, CSUF!! read more

This place has improved so much, I don't know what happened! My regular nurse I see there genuinely cares about me and my health, and always remembers little things. It's really nice that the pharmacy offers medicine at a really discounted price, perfect for my student budget. The pharmacist is very sweet and will explain any medicine to you if you don't fully understand it. Definitely pleased with the change! read more

AWFUL! After many attempts at getting help, I will never come back here again. The receptionists need better training at handling patients. Grown women should not act like high schoolers and gossip while helping patients. They also shouldn't blame patients for their own mistakes. I was honestly in such a bad state where I was trying to get help for my depression. I normally don't post personal information online but I have tried for months to get help and each time I was overlooked and mistreated. I was turned away many times to the point where I was suicidal because I was trying to get help but no one would help me. Every time I would try to set up an appointment I was always treated rudely. The last time I went in the systems were down which was understandable, but I waited for 30 minutes near the entrance because of the heat and overheard the receptionist's gossip about me. I heard them whisper that I looked suspicious since I was near the doorway. After asking again if either of them has notified the doctor that I was there for my appointment, it was revealed that no one told the doctor I was there. The receptionist failed to inform him that I was there, and I was almost skipped over since he had an appointment directly after me. Every time I went in, it was an overall bad experience. My therapist seemed uninterested in my well being, which made me not want to continue seeing her. That is not her fault as we may not have been the right fit for one another. Following this incident, my therapist and I also had a phone call appointment scheduled in order to transfer me to my outside therapist. However, the phone call never came and I never got an email or call saying our appointment was canceled. I have given this place many tries but honestly, it is not worth the time or effort. I would much rather pay the additional fees outside and get the quality customer service and help that I need, rather than waste my time here at a place that truly gives no shits about their patients. read more

This place almost KILLED me. A few years back, I made an appointment to see a psychologist. The first counselor who made the initial review of my mental health was very nice and supportive. If anything, this star is for her. However, when I went to see the actual doctor, I had the worst experience of my life. It was so bad to the point that he told me he did not believe my symptoms and that everything was in my head and there was nothing he could do. First of all, someone having medical problems never wants their doctor to say "There's nothing I can do". But secondly, they didn't believe me? It has definitely ruined my experience with every doctor since, making me skeptic to say my symptoms in fear of not being believed. I was so offended I did not go back. (They wouldn't have helped anyways). A month later, I was in a hospital for attempting suicide. A year later, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in a behavior hospital. So yeah, do not go here for mental health unless you want to risk your life. read more
