The food was probably some of the best we've tasted during our entire stay. The portions are plentiful and the price is reasonable. I have the shepherd's pie - be sure to ask if it's lamb or beef. Today was beef. My dad had the lamb and he said it was the best he has ever tasted. That's quite a compliment. Be sure to save room for dessert - only problem is deciding what to have. We all choose the marshmallow shortbread dipped in chocolate. It was like a mallowmar but infinitely better and a nice surprise of raspberry layer in every bite.

The room was well updated and cozy. Each morning we had full complimentary breakfast across the street at the Barracks restaurant that was included with our room. Scott runs a very hospitable business and his passion for customer service shows through his staff. Michael was awesome, not only was he the one received us at 7pm, checked us in and showed us our room, he was also working each morning in the restaurant and helped us plan our daily journeys around the Galway area. Everyone we met were very attentive , kind and helpful. Next door to the Lodge, The Stone House Pizza had awesome food as well and is the one place we found that serves a true cocktail. I highly recommend staying at the Lodge at The Old Barracks to anyone who likes a local vibe and hospitality. After our fantastic experience I would never consider staying anywhere else when visiting the Galway area.

Fabiola, Brian's partner, has brought a little piece of France to this quiet corner of Ireland! Her delicate pastries and exquisite desserts reflect professional training and an artistic eye. Real locals were coming in and out of Unglert's, taking with them some tasty homemade pastries. We got some too! There's a nice selection of goods under 1 euro, some under 2 euro. Good stuff! Unglert, a friendly fellow, saw us taking a photo of his shop outside, so he decided to get into the photo with me, and even gave me a free postcard so that we would remember his charming, tasty bakery. As for the pants Unglert was wearing that day? Spectacular! :)
