Rarely give 5 start to reviews as it has to be something spectacular. This place is a gem. Loved the atmosphere, hospitality, food and place overall. Food was mighty and served in very good time. The staff were immaculately helpful and manager is a gentleman. His wife, -the chef - is 5 star. Great experience for my family and I.

I am sorry to say that Corner House Bistro is permanently closed, so those looking at Athlone options should be aware.

What a surprise to find in this quaint little town. Endlessly friendly with surprise, rare finds like grilled halloumi. Delicious!

Truly delicious food -- the goat cheese salad and cauliflower brie soup were standouts, but the basics like their bread and hummus were just as good.

We were sent upstairs as the lower level was full. There is a stairway to the right of the front door. About half the upper level was occupied but we managed to get a table by the window. The waiter was pretty good and the food decent. Service was fast considering the amount of people in the building. Located across the river from the Castle, and down the street just at the split, you can't miss the bright yellow front. I believe this is a chain restaurant, and serves a variety of foods like burgers, salads and fish. If you want the pub atmosphere I recommend arriving early. If you don't need the ambiance, or arrive late, you will find good, basic comfort food in a quiet atmosphere upstairs.

My fish chowder was also frankly too salty for me, but it was very lovely service so that does go a long way. Oh also, another dinner on my table disliked the potato mash, but apparently the steak sandwich was okay. I'd check out something else if was returning back to Athalone. The space itself is small and cozy, with just a handful of tables and a private room, which gives it that intimate, tucked‑away feel. I'd 100% go back. They offer two specialty cocktails and a wine list, and while the cocktail selection is limited, the wines are unique and fantastic -- definitely worth exploring. The food was outstanding across the board. The monkfish scampi isn't what you might picture, but it's fantastic -- super crispy and full of flavor. And you have to get the bread: tomato focaccia or brown bread, then topped with the fennel, thyme, and maple butter were all unforgettable. The bavette steak was delicious, and the mashed potatoes were truly out of this world. The sea trout was incredibly fresh; just a heads‑up that the gremolata is spread over the whole dish, so it ends up almost poached in olive oil -- worth noting for anyone sensitive to that, but the flavor itself was excellent. Definitely end the night with the affogato and the shortbread cookies (chef's kiss). Who doesn't like to dunk their dessert? Highly recommend, would absolutely come back.
