While I was staying in Athlone and wandered off the main street, I found Hatter's Bistro and was…read moreinstantly intrigued by the mysterious vibe of this place... It's a 2-floor establishment, with a restaurant in the basement and a pub on the main floor; with more paraphernalia and interesting knick-knacks to spend the rest of your stay examining... Now to the important part: the food! In a word, it's great! It can be tricky for me to find a decent vegetarian/vegan bite to eat in Ireland; luckily, Brendan, whose family owns the place (which, as the name hints at, used to be a hat factory), has knowledge of vegan food and could assure me that everything would be in order. As for my experience as a whole; I definitely enjoyed the atmosphere, and will visit again when I'm in Athlone! Definitely suitable for going on a date as well; the dimmed reddish lighting down the back creates an intimate atmosphere - and of course, everything is better when it has a story...

While it limited her selection of starters, the tuna and gazpacho were an other-worldly pairing. I tried a few bites, and the tuna's quality bested even the freshest cuts I've had in both Hawaii and Japan. I loved how playfully the fennel was plated, too. I opted for the quail ballotine for my starter, as it was new to the menu. The apricots' sweetness interrupted the walnuts' nuttiness in the best way, like they had something very important to tell me. The mains continued to impress. My only note on the fillet of beef is that it was served with a dinner knife rather than a steak knife. But I made it work! They accommodated my partner with a dairy-free desert... a superb rhubarb sorbet. The plating was almost nautical, like a mystery deep sea creature. It was quite sour and ice cold. Very refreshing. I had the coffee tart with whiskey ice cream. Each bite managed a lightness that I wasn't expecting. Excellent and unique all around. The dining area was gorgeous. The dark wood tones and verdant walls made the whole experience feel lush yet comfortable. The well-oiled service did not go unnoticed. Servers were very aware of where we were in our meal. They were attentive yet balanced between other tables. They timed our dishes just as they were meant to be timed. Running a service that effectively is very challenging, well done everyone! (Also, to whoever cubed my partner's dairy-free potatoes, you did so with absolute precision. We marveled over your technique! It takes ages to do and did not go unnoticed. We greatly appreciate you!)

Dear Sir/Madam, I…read morehave never left a place feeling so unsatisfied and uneasy about a situation before. Today the 8th of December my friends and I went for a ladies lunch in Poppy Fields's when we got there we were seated and happy. About 20 minutes had a passed and no one had taken our order , we completely understand they were busy and it wasn't an issue whatsoever, to save the lady coming out I said I would go inside and go to the till to put our order in as I walked in I was met with the lady who rudely said to mr go outside I'll take your order out there it's to busy, I said no problem but it was rude and aggressive and the tone she used made me feel uncomfortable and shook. Shortly after the same lady came out to take our order and as she was leaving she slammed the menus on the table next to us loudly and with force. A while later our food had arrived. As she was giving us our food she said and I quite "no pepper " I said that's me and proceeded to hand the plate she implied was with no peppers to my friend and my friend said "no sorry that's not mine" and I said "I thinks it's mine I got it with no peppers" she turned to me in the RUDEST manor and said "yes you will have to wait" I was shocked and uneasy my friend turned to her and said" you are being so rude " and she said rudely , cheeky and just so smart "I'm not being rude" "am I being rude " and we just could not believe that this happened we didn't even finish our food we left in shock. We went to the till to pay for our food and the lady was so sweet behind the counter she said "if you guys are ever in a rush on your lunch just let us know we can accommodate you" it wasn't that we were in a rush it was that she was so rude and we understand it's lunch hour, rush hour and it can be stressful but it really left us unhappy and made us not want to go back ever again. Really disappointed and frustrated over it.

Never have I been to a place where everyone literally raved about every course after the meal. I went for the soup...a force of habit. It was very tasty. I wasn't able for anything more than ice cream afterwards but I left the place feeling like I'd just eaten a meal fit for royalty! I have to mention the staff as well. Not only did they return to the table with the food and gave everyone their correct plate without having to ask who had ordered what but they were also attentive in an understated way. Mains: Ordered a turkey, bacon, onion stuffing and cranberry sauce dish. Hands down one of the best meals I've ever eaten ( I travel professionally around the world and eat well). The essence of Thanksgiving on a plate plus perfectly fresh veggies and a baked potato. My wife LOVED the Salmon, my Mother-in-law had a fish Trio and my son Pasta. Everyone at the table raved about their dish, we each sampled each other's and agreed . *. Dinner was complimented by a nice bottle of French wine. *. After our meal we had a lovely conversation with the owner and learned about her husband Greg (the Chef) Combined they make a perfect front and back of the house pair. *. We were treated to Irish coffees, a birthday song and an Ice Cream Sunday for wife with a trick candle to add a little more fun to the evening. If I'm back in Tullamore, trying more of the menu will be at the top of my list!
