Outstanding lunch here, one of the better meals I've had in all of Ireland. Simple, yet artful creations. I had Mimo's Spiced Chicken Sandwich and it was fresh and flavorful. For my side item, I chose the potato salad, which is some of the best that I've ever had. It was super fresh and included fresh dill along with some chunks of pickle. A place like this just makes my heart sing. Starbucks it ain't. It's local independent, cosy and quality. Our waitress was joy personified - the welcome was warm and she fussed over us to get us seated then brought menus. The cafe has a take away go left and a separate sit - in area go right where we nestled into. The cafe was busy - both takeaway and sit in - just into the early afternoon. It was a flat white, a cappuccino and a generous chunk of home - made, zingy lemon meringue pie between us. The coffees and the light airy pie were delicious. The rest - rooms were well appointed too. Once the food was delivered to the table I asked for the bill so that we could just leave once we were done. While driving down to Cork from Dublin, we stopped in Portlaoise for lunch and wandered into The Pantry. Who wouldn't - the place is inviting as heck, a cozy little cafe with a sense of humor on the main drag. All of the food looked pretty great, a mix of the traditional with the healthy. A lot of vegetarian options, which was a relief after a couple of days of heavy meat-based meals. I had a great sweet potato, egg and spinach frittata, along with a warm pot of tea. It came with two sides of my choice as well, and I opted for some mixed grain / vegetable things to really round off my one healthy meal of this entire trip. Alas, I didn't get to try out any of their desserts but they all looked pretty solid. A stand-out nice meal, definitely the type of place I'd frequent if I lived anywhere remotely on that side of the world. read more

Every small town in Ireland should be so lucky to have a café like this! Twee, cosy setting with a fabulous selection of cakes and salads - as well as a breakfast and lunch menu. Everything was well labeled, with options for vegans/vegetarians. The french toast is worth travelling for alone! Big generous pots of tea and wonderful service. Far nicer than many cafes I've dined in Dublin. The only slight let down would be the bathrooms, they're very small - but clean. I love that the owner has his wedding cards framed on the walls, such a nice personal touch. read more

In Portlaoise for a football match, we stopped off here for a quick bite. Excellent ciabatta panninis with maple ham, a generous side of coleslaw and leaves were just what the hungry fans needed. A slab - can't think of a more appropriate description - of cheesecake with a couple of lattes finished off a more than adequate repast for a shade under 20 quid for two. A nice room, great location and friendly staff made this a very enjoyable fuel stop. Recommended. read more

Quaint and Friendly Full disclosure: this was not our original plan for lunch. Since we could not locate the place we wanted to visit, we settled on The Pantry. In the end, we were glad we couldn't find the other place. The decor here is simply charming, the staff was warm and welcoming, and the food was quite good. We happened across The Pantry on our way from Dublin to Cashel (based on reviews) and were so glad we did. This seemed like a good half way point on our trip, and we were hungry. This is a place where you order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. The place is quaint, with cute tables and mismatched china. The menu had a nice selection. The food we ate and saw others eating was excellent. The eggs benedict was reported by one in our group to be the best he has ever had. Highly recommend stopping here. read more
