I just got back to Cincinnati from celebrating my sister's birthday at Cruisers. Four of us got amazing service from Tiffany, and excellent food, at a reasonable price. For appetizers, we had jalapeño poppers, chili cheese fries, and tater tots. All were very good. For lunch, we had a turkey bacon club melt, a bacon cheeseburger, meatloaf, and something else that I can't remember. All of it came out hot from the kitchen, and was very good. For dessert we had apple pie à la mode, and excellent coconut cream pie. We don't recommend the apple pie, but we absolutely recommend the coconut cream pie. Cruisers Diner is about an hour drive from my house, and just a little over an hour from my sister's house, so it's our favorite place to meet. It is very clean, and affordable, with true diner food. Last time we go there! We have been going to Cruisers for years and loved it. We've even encouraged others to go there. This evening we both ordered an omelette, hash browns, and toast. One of the omelettes sat in the window for 15 minutes! The waitress saw it and did nothing. She finally brought both our omelettes, (one hot, one cold) no toast, no hash browns. As I walked in behind a feeble gentleman he was greeted by the owner and told that there were no tables. He asked if he would wait at the bar. I stood waiting and yet I was not greeted nor invited to sit down. A group of 4 people came in behind me and the owner runs over to the group and his the guests. He then clears a table and invites the elderly gentleman to sit down at the table. He declined so I thought I would be seated at the table however I was finally invited to sit down at the bar. I visited cruisers diner the other day and honestly was disappointed. I ordered a burger and it was a literal JTM frozen patty. At a diner you expect to get a burger that is tasty--perhaps a smash burger made of fresh not frozen beef. This was a huge disappointment for an $8 burger. The potatoes were creamy and very good. I had a dinner salad as my one side. The salad was very good. The food was plated very nice. My husband had a half order of open face roast beef. Mashed potatoes on a slice of white bread topped off with the meat and brown gravy. He had cottage cheese as his one side. We shared a order of fried pickle slices served with ranch dressing. They were horrible. I think the breading was a cornmeal mixture. They looked undercooked but weren't. The pickle was dry. They need to see if their food supplier can do better. They are most definitely in a frozen pickle. The server was not attentive. She gave us a menu and we told her it was our first time. We waited and waited and waited for her to come back. I finally had to stand up and wave at her so we could order. I had to do that again to get our check. She never came back to see if our food was good. No refills on our drinks. Soda and tea is $2.49. Lazy day at the house and didn't want to cook but, I still wanted a hot meal. Cruisers has been around for a while now in this area. Many have great things to say about it. I didn't feel like eating inside so I ordered on the phone and picked it up. As always the inside is just a fun atmosphere. It really gives off that classic 50's diner feel. Staff was friendly and the place was full for the most part. I left with my food and returned home. I went with old reliable. The country fried steak dinner. The steak came with mashed potatoes, roll and a choice of either a salad or the soup of the day, which was vegetable. I went with the soup. I finished up with a piece of peanut butter pie for dessert. We will start with the pros. The steak was fried nicely and very tender. The gravy was good as always. It's hard to screw that up. The vegetable soup was to die for. Tasted fresh and had nice chunks of shredded beef inside. Definitely the highlight of the meal. Now for the cons. INSTANT MASHED POTATOES!! Really??? I just didn't expect this. The potatoes were still very flakey. The only thing that saved them was the gravy of course. The roll was tough, not soft at all. The peanut butter pie was just okay. Little to no flavor at all. No richness. Not something I expected out of a "dessert". So to wrap things up. I'm giving Cruisers 3 stars. I think that's fair. Great look to the place, good atmosphere, friendly staff and steak and soup were on point. I can't rate it any higher due to the mashed potatoes, roll and pie. Let's break this down for those who may not understand: 1) it's a diner. Diners serve diner food. I know this may come as a shock to some of y'all based on other reviews I've read. 2) I find it hard to believe that the service wasn't excellent. We didn't have to ask for refills, silverware, nothing. Our waitress was on top of it. 3) This is a mom & pop restaurant, it's not Jeff Ruby's and if you come in here with the expectations of it being one, you're way off base to begin with and should probably just keep driving. I can tell that a lot of you don't understand just how valuable places like Cruisers are to the local economy and to history. I'd take a place like this anyway over a chain restaurant. 4) the food was delicious. The hubcap burger was huge, juicy and delicious. The onion rings don't come from a bag, people actually work to make this food, they aren't opening a bag from Sam's club and dumping food in the fryer. The open face roast beef (I had 1/2 a portion) was more than enough to fill me up. 5) do not pass on dessert. Pies are homemade too and we'll worth the extra calories. i ordered a chicken tender basket, and that is not what i recieved. i got small, tiny bits of chicken, that were extremely dry and had no flavor. if i wanted to receive dairy bar food i would've went to a different establishment. Way, way out in the country sits a shiny, aluminum diner from the 1950s. The waitresses call you "sweetie" with a southern accent, and you can get anything on the menu at any time of day. Plus, everything on the menu is under $10.00. Cruisers is full of blue collared charm. The menu lists endless items of home cookin' from meatloaf to country fried chicken, hamburgers, double deckers, and of course, breakfast. I had #1 Breakfast Special, which was two eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and toast, and a side of pancakes. The food was incredible for a diner. Everything is made to order and made from scratch. Cruisers borders an Amish community, so there are plenty of fresh ingredients brought in. The pancakes were the highlight of the meal. They tasted special, like they had a hint of almond and nutmeg in them. Delicious. Our table also had a Farmer's Omelette, with ham, cheddar, onions and green peppers, plus a country fried steak with mashed potatoes. A neighboring table also ordered the meatloaf sandwich, which looked incredible. Everything was devoured and we all left with clean plates. As for the service, it could have been better. The food took a really long time to come out, particularly for diner food. Yes, it's made from scratch, but it's also eggs and bacon. We waited over a half hour for our food. When the orders arrived, the waitress brought us someone else's order. Then she came back with the correct food. Almost. My #1 Breakfast Special (which was also the daily special) didn't arrived with hashbrowns or toast. Upon mentioning it to the waitress, she said that my order didn't include those. I remembered reading it on the menu, so I showed her the text. "Oh, but you ordered the #2." No. I ordered the daily special. I'm not sure how that got mixed up. The waitress went to bring out the missing food, but it was another 15 minute wait until the hashbrowns showed up. No toast. Our table had finished eating by the time it arrived, so I just let the missing toast go. Like I said, the food was amazing, but the service bumped this down to three-stars.
