Have been back twice since my last review. First got the Nester Pizza. It's a pizza loaded with sausage stuffed Hungarian hot peppers, and it is GOOD. Definitely spicy, right up my alley. Last time had the steak salad and fried hot pepper cheese balls. The cheese balls were served with marinara, and while their sauce is very good, they were better without it. This place was recommended as one of the most popular restaurants in Ashtabula. I had their bacon cheeseburger and it was very generously sized (pic) and delicious. My friend ordered the BBQ ribs and said they were some of the best he's ever had; very generous portion and meat just fell off the bone. Service was very friendly and prompt on a busy Saturday night. Luckily we found a seat within the bar area and didn't have to wait because the restaurant was packed. I played it safe because when you're at a bar and skeptical of the food, you think "how can they mess up fried food?" Well stay away from the fried shrimp. So tiny, def not worth it! Can't beat the price for the amount of food you get. Was there for lunch as it is a must stop everytime I come back home to Ashtabula. We had the Cheeseburger, Open Face Meatball Sub and the Beef Hoagie. All prepared fresh and huge portions. Can never finish all our food. The only complaint we had was that the Meatball Sub Sauce is way to sweet. It cost less then $10.00 a person to eat lunch. Staff is always quick and friendly. Delicious food and affordable prices. Trying to find a table most nights is a little hard. Which is a good thing for them, bad thing for others wanting to enjoy a meal. The service is sorta slow as well. We usually do take out because it's so crowded. I'd recommend expanding so the tables aren't on top of each other. I'm sorry to say I got the worst meal I've ever gotten out of your restaurant my girlfriend and I eat here about 8 times a year and of course the one time I bring my father and my stepmom out to have dinner we get the worst service ever !!! 40 mins after ordering our food came out wrong now another 14 mins and half my food comes out ice cold and still not right !!! The restaurant has a homey nautical feel. We were greeted immediately by a friendly staff member. Nice selection on the menu. I order French onion soup for an appetizer. It was phenomenal! Hot, cheesy and not too strong. Mild onions and garlicky piece of baguette on top. For dinner I had an open face meatball sandwich. It was good but skimpy on the meatballs. I ordered onion rings instead of French fries. They were excellent- real rings not little chunks of onion. Nicely fried and fresh. Very good tasting home made tomato sauce. The drinks were good also. The lunch portions are smaller than the dinner ofcourse. I had fried fish with krinkley fries. The waitress seemed sweet, but she didn't come to check up on us after we received our order. If she had, she would have found out that one of our friends had not received his lasagna. We called another waiter over to ask about the food. Then he spoke with our waitress who went in the back to grab the lasagna. Sitting on the counter maybe? Who knows. He ate his meal alone. haha! Up on the frozen shores of Lake Erie I seek a repast fit for me hearty appetite and I spy the Crow's Nest. Argh, I says to meself, there'll be good grub here, I'll wager, the docks are full and there"s naught a place to seat! The doors keep out the cool air and a warmth comes over me, shakin' the chill from me bones. A warmer smile from the maid at the bar as she asks me drink and I'm feeling cozy here. A nice selection of the local catch is on the menu, but peering outside I see the fish must be frozen, so I go for the house speciality, Italian. I order the sampler, so I may sample all there is to see. I wait a bit, but it's not ling 'ere my dish is steaming before me, though I know naught what 'tis. The sampler seems an excuse to throw excess pasta beneath the red sauce, left to swim in the marinara deeps before becoming the dinner of some salty dog or wayward traveller like me. The sauce isn't bad, nor the cheese, but each bite is a suprise as I can't see what's on the tip o' me fork 'til it's too late for concern. Surely the locals enjoy it here, but I'll not be dockin' at this port again soon. Mayhap I'll have the good fortune to be here for some fish o'er the summer, when the winds are as fair as the bar maids smile. read more

The Crow's Nest is my hands down favorite place for a cold draft beer, and consistently great food! I enjoy their pasta dishes, and they seem to be favorites of the local crowd. I sometimes try their sampler platter of onion rings, chicken fingers, and pizza rolls. It seems that the platter is always done well, without being too greasy. And their antipasto salad, with the house dressing, is excellent! The price is reasonable for most items, and just right for my wallet! read more

The food was incredibly delicious, they have a million salad dressings to choose from and there are big TVs for a bar setting separate from the dining room. A gem of a diner in the middle of a falling apart area. Being a diner I didn't expect much, but was blissfully surprised by a tasteful and homey place. I been here several times. I would sat that they have consistently the poorest services of any restaurant that I frequent. The hygiene is also lacking. The bus boy constantly slings a dirty rag around in the air. They have an open sink that they keep ice in and in the process of filling glasses and carafes there hands end up in the ice. I've even observed them pushing spilled ice with there hands back into the sink from the courter top. My boyfriend and I came for dinner on a Sunday night. There was a decent amount of customers but the place seemed a little understaffed. Our waitress was very lovely but service was so slow we considered just walking out. Once we got our orders in our appetizers came pretty fast. We got onion rings and they were very hot- seemed fresh out of the fryer as they were also greasy. They were still good though. Then our main courses came - I got fettuccine alfredo and he got chicken Parmesan. Mine was bland (tasted like a frozen meal) but still edible. His chicken was rubbery and spaghetti sauce was too sweet. Neither of us could even eat it. We have both worked in the restaurant industry so we don't like to be difficult at restaurants but the food here was just awful. The manager was really nice and understanding and refunded our entire meals. The employees are nice but the food is just terrible. We will not be back. read more

Horrible service. The bartenders were very rude and it took a long time to get another drink. The older patrons were also rude and didn't like outsiders in "their bar". They were crude and dirty old men who made a lot of rude comments to myself and my friends. Ashtabula is a pretty poor city and one would think that any income coming in would be good income. I am an Ashtabula resident. I would not recommend this restaurant, especially if you have food allergies or a dietary preference. I am a vegetarian, most restaurants have at least one vegetarian meal or will be willing to cater to the customer. I told my waitress that I was vegetarian (have been for 15 years). I was interested in trying a pasta dish. I asked her if meatballs were cooked in the sauce. She stated that they have 2 pots of sauce one with and one without meat. She was wrong! There was meat in my meal. My husband who is not vegetarian tried it, and confirmed that there were pieces of meat mixed in pastal. This was brought to the waitresses attention a couple times. She didn't apologize, didn't take it off the bill, didn't offer me another meal. Absolutely nothing. She thought it was odd there was meat in it, blew me off, as though she didn't believe me. She clearly didn't care. Beware of this establishment if you have food allergies or dietary preferences. The restaurant staff may mislead you and wosre yet, not even care. read more
