I would leave 0 stars if I could. Ordered chicken tenders, onion rings and cole slaw. First, they were out of cole slaw and onion rings, so they substituted potato wedges and macaroni salad. Wedges were ok, macaroni salad was bland. But BY FAR the WORST thing were the chicken tenders. They were BLAND, DRY, FLAT and STRINGY. Obviously just VERY low quality "chicken". I took two bites and was instantly grossed out. I'm no chicken snob, but this was truly just horrible. I tried bites of a couple of other pieces but they were all bad. Just... bad. I'd had frozen chicken from the supermarket that was 10x better for half the price. I was so disappointed, I called the restaurant (I ordered it from Grubhub), and asked if the chicken was fresh. He said, yes, we just made it. I said, no I'm asking if you make it yourself there, or do you buy it frozen? He said oh yeah, we get frozen tenders and reheat them in the fryer. When I told him I thought it was crazy to sell frozen chicken for that amount of money (it was not cheap) he had no reply. When I said I wanted a refund (I was NOT rude, mind you), he said "nope". He said to get Popeye's next time. I pointed out to him that Popeye's is MUCH better than what he served me. I don't know what their regular fried chicken is like, but I can't imagine it's any good, nor am I willing to try it. I'm positive the fish is also frozen disgusting, cheap CRAP. The meals came with choice of side. We got fries and coke slaw. The fries were good and coke slaw was fresh but the jury is still out on whether I'd get it again. Probably not. They had what seemed like a homemade white garlic cream sauce that was very good on everything. It was a small place with adequate seating and the guys there were awesome. Each order of Chicken is fried to order, to perfection. The crisp and crunch and flavor was like no other. I can't tell you how infuriated I've been ever since Halal Guys dropped the ball. "You were supposed to be the chosen one." Bring balance to the "halal food" scene, yada yada yada. Aladdin's is great, but they don't really do chicken and rice very well. They are open until 3 am or whatever, so that's great, but not always useful. Halal Guys took a formula that couldn't be messed up and somehow found a way to mess it up with ridiculous portion sizes. Mamoun's is neither here nor there. And, Ali Baba is only on Cedar St for lunch, otherwise you have to drive up Dixwell... So, what do you do when its between 8-11 pm when you need chicken/gyro and rice? Hop on the 95, exit 42, about an 8 minute drive during the aforementioned hours from downtown New Haven and walk into Crown Chicken and Fish. Are they doing fried chicken, fried fish, "halal food", or everything? The chicken and gyro over rice was super. Its not NYC Halal Guys, but for New Haven its probably right below Ali Baba. The white sauce has a weird kick and a slightly too thin consistency, otherwise its excellent. There really isn't a hot sauce except for bottled buffalo sauce which is what necessitates the 4 stars instead of 5. Otherwise, I loved the medium sized chunks of gyro meat and tandoori style chicken. Everything was seasoned really well, and the rice definitely has an Afghani style to it that is a much needed break from turmeric tinged yellow rice I'm used to. Solid food overall, I'm kind of excited to try out the other stuff. The service is pretty good and its a family owned and operated business so there's a lot to like about the place. Once you're inside the restaurant you'll notice it resembles a diner, but its kept fairly clean and its also a decent place to just sit down and enjoy your meal before it gets cold on the way home. Found this place on Yelp, and being from NYC I have plenty of great experience with Halal dishes. Ordered the chicken and gyro mix platter, and glad I did. The chicken very well seasoned, the lamb was more fluffy and fatty, more like cut up kebabs rather than gyro, which was great.
