This is a very special place! We were in St. Louis for 4 days and ended up eating here twice. The first time was on a Saturday afternoon so it was PACKED with people (the line was out the door) so we just got a couple malts to go. The second time we went back was on a Monday evening and we were able to get a table. I had a banana malt the first time, then a pineapple orange ice cream cone the second. Both were DELICIOUS! My husband had never had a malt before but ended up getting a vanilla malt both times because he liked it so much. The atmosphere is wonderful, the service is fast and friendly. Don't be put-off by the rundown area it's in...we felt quite safe while we were there. :) read more

First let me say that the emotional impact of coming to Crown Candy Kitchen is huge for me. My parents met and courted in the neighborhood surrounding Crown and this was one of their favorite places to go on nights out. Sadly I have lost both my parents so those memories and little bits of nostalgia are very sweet, just like the candy and ice cream at Crown Candy Kitchen. The food is top notch, classic and very tasty. If you love bacon the BLT is the best that money can buy. The ice cream is perfect, not the overly sweet, tasteless stuff you will find at modern chain places. So why not 5 stars? Location, location, location. I get the nostalgia but the area is scary and definitely not safe. I would never go there without my husband or adult son. I know that the owners have said things publicly in the past about leaving the area but I guess it is hard to leave a place with so much history, which I do understand, that whole parents thing I mentioned before. I would love to see the area revitalized but St.Louis' political agenda will never allow that to happen, I really do wish it would. I wish it was such that they could stay open late for ice cream after the Muny on a summer night, but they can't. Even if they stay in the same location they need to update the booths. They are so very small that only the tiniest of adults can possibly sit comfortably in them. read more

Crown Candy Kitchen is the center of my old neighborhood I grew up in. I lived up and down and all around the 14Th Street area. We would always meet there with our Friends. I remember in the 60's playing those satellite jukeboxes with the sounds of Temptations, James Brown, Monkeys, Beatles...... Playing the pinball machines! Oh what fun we had at Crowns. Real Cokes mixed right in front of you with real cherry in it! The fresh made ice cream cones are the best I ever tasted. Fresh store made candies created in the back room. I live in N. California now, but when I'm visiting family in St. Louis, I ALWAYS eat at Crowns. It looks the same as it did in the sixty's and probably the 40s and 50s. If you want a flash back into the past, go to THE CROWNS! This is Chester Green, Shout out to all the folks in the old neighborhood! :) read more

This place rocks my socks off. If you want to dine like the 1930's/40's, this is it. There's things in the restaurant that scream "older than grandparents" but it just adds to the kitschy-ness of Crown Candy Kitchen. A friend and I were brought here under a local BBQ-king's suggestion [close to his factory] as "authentic St Louis fare". On our way, I made sure to pull up the Yelp review, which as I read was spoken by said BBQ-king to get the BLT. So we walked in, had no need to look at the menu and got our order right in [we arrived right before the lunch rush]. My version of BLT's are not quite like Crown's BLT - BAAAAAAAAAAACON, lettuce, a little tomato and mayo on plain white bread. I love bacon dearly but after my futile attempt to complete the BLT, I had to take a temporary breakup with bacon. My heart and arteries literally hurt a little upon the breakup [COULD it have been the bacon fat? nah]. I tried my best to drink a chocolate malt to "complement" the BLT, but I failed miserably there as well. The body pains were worth every bite & sip. Come with an empty stomach and you may leave with some [good] body pains as I did. read more

Been here a few times and every time I eat here I want more. On nice weekends there's a line out the door but it go's pretty fast. I like that they have a orders to go so if you want you don't have to stand in a long line. My wife loves the candy they sale. read more

This place totally lives up to its reputation. I had a butterscotch malt and it was awesome. The chocolate banana milkshake that I got for my husband was wonderful. The Big Cheese sandwich (pumped up grilled cheese) was solid. Even the chocolate sprinkles on my son's ice cream were way above average. My husband's cousin confirmed that the BLTs are to die for. The service was good. Nice atmosphere. I really hope that the development in the area takes off, as the Kitchen deserves to be the heart of a rocking neighborhood. I appreciated the plaque for those brave souls who have managed to drink 5 malts in 30 minutes. read more

Stopped in for some lunch and ice cream with the one and only Andy P. during our road trip from Dallas to Connecticut. The chicken salad sandwich I had was decent, but clearly that's not the reason to go here - it's all about the ice cream, and the shakes. I had a chocolate banana shake, which was ridiculously good. Andy got a sundae, and I have to admit the ice cream didn't live up to the shake. In many ways, this place reminded me of Itgen's back home (http://www.yelp.com/biz/itgens-walt-ice-cream-parlour-valley-stream#hrid:__EXmJRnRkhOCkNOY462YQ/query:itgen%27s), and while not necessarily a fair comparison, I'd have to give the edge to Itgen's. Still, definitely worth checking out for a shake if you're in the St. Louis area. A St. Louis highlight! Took my 11 yr old nephew, who LOVES bacon... He only mastered half of the BLT. All yummy, fun atmosphere! If you aren't as familiar with St. Louis, it's a nice and quaint corner of old north city. Generally not the safest of areas, but this section seems to take pride in their area- it was very clean and festive. Sad to see so many empty shops nearby. Makes one wonder what the community may have been like even 10 or 15 years ago. Crown Candy is a sweet sentiment to that. read more

The best BLT you'll ever eat, and everything else is great too. Try a strawberry chocolate shake/malt or even banana chocolate. It's worth every second you wait in line to get a seat. Friendly staff that stays on top of their game. The candy is pretty tasty too. A STL institution. Oh and P.S. the chili is a beanless wonder I would eat every day. read more

I was excited to try Crown Candy since I saw it on Man vs. Food. I ordered a hot fudge malt. It was delicious. When my milkshake arrived, the waitress gave me a glass to pour my milkhake into and the metal cup in which my milkshake was made. When I first saw this, I wondered if I could have done the milkshake challenge. After I poored my third milkshake from the metal cup, however, I realized the milkshake challenge was beyond me. Overall, it was a great milkshake, rich and creamy. read more

Woohoo - CCK is open on Sundays. We got there about 11:45 and had to wait for a few minutes, but we beat the big crowd. Their BLTs are massive (tho I haven't personally had one) and everything else on the menu is wonderful. Just don't head here hoping for a low calorie meal...it's not gonna happen. You can't leave without trying a milk shake (my favorite is plain old vanilla) and some of their homemade chocolates. read more

My partner and I were craving the delicious egg sandwiches on the toasted wheat bread that we remember Crown Candy to offer. So off we went and waited in line this afternoon for about 15 minutes to get one of the few booths they still have in the restaurant. Crown Candy is run as inefficient as you can possibly run a restaurant. You wait in line for one of the few booths. You have what appears to be a busser to cleaning the tables as they are vacant. You have two servers. Time gaps between your line wait, your wait to have the table cleaned and the busser arrives, and then time between the busser leaves you and the server arrives . . . just not good! Back to the food . . . we each ordered the egg salad sandwich for $5.49. Comes with pickle and some potatoe chips. The egg salad was just dry - bread was toated, but the egg salad was just DRY and lacking any taste at all. So next time I'm craving a delicious egg salad sandwich . . . I will fly to Los Angeles and go to The Apple Pan! The Apple Pan has the best egg salad sandwiches in all of America! read more

I love this place. Its kind of like going back in time. The food is amazing. A pound of bacon on a BLT!! I like it because there are not televisions and music blaring everywhere. Its like the diners of the 50s . If your in St. Louis you must go there at least once. read more

The food is delicious and not too expensive. The location isn't the best part of town, but the store makes it very enjoyable! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

I was expecting to wait in a super long line on a Saturday around noon, but our wait was only about 15 minutes. Though that was only for two other parties in front of us, so I can't imagine how long the wait is if the line is actually outside the door. You can also order take-out (separate line to the left once you get inside). There were four of us and we all ordered milkshakes and sandwiches. The milkshakes came out really quick and the food shortly thereafter. The milkshakes are 24 oz. and come in the metal container along with a glass. There's enough milkshake for 3 glassfuls. I ordered the grilled cheese, which was perfect. American cheese on texas toast, comes with what seems like generic ruffle potato chips and a pickle. The chips were mostly crumbs, but still good. I didn't buy any candy, but they had a good selection. Though $14 for the giant lollipop was a big much, I think. read more

The Heart Stopping BLT definitely stopped by heart, but not because of cardiac arrest. I was in love with all that bacon! Crown Candy Kitchen is a throwback to a 1940's candy/malt shop and it's so nice and quaint inside, really looking like how I assume it looked back in the day. I made a poor choice of milk shake flavors, but I'm not faulting Crown for that, I should have chosen a flavor that I knew I would have liked instead of venturing out to a new flavor. Even without liking my particular flavor, I could still tell the shake was of very high quality, and I'd definitely give Crown another try should I find myself in the St. Louis area again sometime! read more

Yum, yummy, yum! Just made my second homage to Crown Candy. For my first trip, we just had ice cream treats. This time, we enjoyed lunch and ice cream in one of their quaint little booths! Our lunches included a BLT, a Reuben, and a Turkey Special sandwich. All come with a side of chips and a pickle spear. The BLT had at least a half pound of bacon and was tasty goodness! The reuben was given a thumbs up by my food snob friend and the turkey special also earned kudos. And then, for the ice cream. A butterscotch shake, a chocolate-strawberry shake, and a fruit salad sundae. All three were heavenly. The shakes are ridiculously huge and delicious. The term "fruit salad" might be a strech, but my sundae was scrumptious none the less. Crown Candy is a Saint Louis institution, but please don't go there, so I don't have to stand in line any more ;) read more

You just can't mess with Crown Candy Kitchen. The food and the malts are superbulousfabuamericanfatstyle! They have a "who can down 5 malts in 30 minutes" contest. Not a lot you can add about this place that hasn't been said. The malts (I had a chocolate, banana, marshmallow malt) are simply phenomenal, it would be hard to overstate just how good they are. The candy selection is great, and if you're looking for Easter selections you should get down there now because they have the most amazing variety of homemade chocolate bunnies you've ever seen. Helpful hint. If you are there to get candy vs. staying to eat you should walk straight to the door and take a number at the ticket dispenser there. You don't need to stand in line. When there is a line out the door that procedure is not apparent and time after time people were waiting in that long line not realizing that they should have taken a number. The food on the other hand, is just OK in my opinion. I love the BLT, you've never seen so much crisp bacon stacked between two pieces of bread, and they use Miracle Whip on it! It's an architectural disaster, but oh so good. And the tamale is ok. But to be honest I'm not as ga-ga over a lot of the other items. None of it is bad, I just have a hard time giving 5 stars if I'm including food into the equation. The one mystery of the day was parking. There was a huge line of people out the door, none of whom lived locally (when you see the neighborhood you'll know why I can be so certain about that statement), yet there were open parking spaces all over the place when we arrived and when we left. How did all of those people get there? Is there some Crown Candy shuttle that I don't know about? Is there one of those Willy Wonka glass elevators hidden around the corner? Are they visitors from "elsewhere" taking on human form (there were a few whose human disguises weren't working so well)? I just don't get it. read more

Yum! I lived in STL for over 20 years before moving to Nashville and never once enjoyed the treasure that is Crown Candy Kitchen. What a shame that I had to wait until I was home for a visit and on my way back to Nashvegas to finally discover what all the fuss is about! I took my husband here on a whim to enjoy some delicious comfort food and it did NOT disappoint! I enjoyed a big bowl of the chili - which is some of the best chili I have ever eaten, anywhere - with a perfect grilled cheese sandwich. My husband was surprised by his corned beef sandwich, containing a good amount of corned beef and enjoyed with some spicy mustard. Next time, however, he'd order the enormous BLT he saw walk by our table. While my hubby was in the bathroom, I couldn't help but to order the Crown sundae - a huge bowl of the homemade ice cream topped with hot fudge, caramel and salty pecans. HOLY YUM! This was easily one of the best things I've ever eaten, ever in my entire life - and that's saying something. It took every ounce of willpower I had to convince myself I was full and push the bowl away - despite my best efforts, I polished off that sucker and enjoyed every bite! Before we left, I purchased some of their homemade chocolates for my colleagues to enjoy back in Nashville. The 1lb box was gone by the next day! Needless to say, we'll be back to Crown Candy as soon as we can. This is truly a St Louis treasure - what took me so long to make it there??? read more

Old North is a fascinating part of Saint Louis culture & the urbanization of such an area only adds to the charm. Some may be hesitant to bring their family down to a seemingly dilapidated neighborhood but I urge you to ignore that perception! The residents are grade A and your support of CC is in turn supporting their revitalization efforts! Trust me, the trash littered streets in no way reflects the desires of the community or their efforts. Take a walk down 14th street, or Crown Square, and see for yourself. Talk to people, say hi, eat lunch! Sigh. I suppose I will save my ONSL glorification for some place else and tell you about Crown Candy now. Crown Candy is what some may call the jewel of Old North & once visited it's not hard to understand why. It's reminiscent of a retro dinner, sandwich shop, parlor, and five and dime and it's sized just right for an intimate setting. One can leave with a guaranteed sense of nostalgia & belly full of meaty sandwiches, rich shakes or if just visiting for a quick glance; sweets! If you're especially hungry try the 5 malt challenge or the Heartstopping BLT. If you don't have the appetite of a 10 year old pubescent boy stick with one shake because it's essentially two! Also remember to ask for your shake 'straight' if you want a chocolate shake with chocolate ice cream. Rookies these days. This is a family shop but it's not meant for large groups, or large people, and you will wait much longer for a 5 top. If you want to come during busy hours do so in groups of 2/3 or expect to wait. PSA: Seeing a line out the door is common but it is easily avoided if you don't mind eating lunch at 3pm. read more

I have no idea why it's taken me so long to write a review for Crown Candy, but I was reminded of how wonderful this place is after my mom gave me one of their chocolate bunnies for Easter last weekend (as if I needed to be reminded)! As a took a bite out of the ears, I was blown away by delicious cocoa creaminess. I don't know what I could say that hasn't been said, but I'll give it a try. You can't beat the charm of Crown Candy. It has stood tall in North St. Louis when many other business closed around it--so they're doing something right. They're still rockin' the old school ice cream parlor booths and decor and I've had a lot of fun with their jukebox in the past. I've been coming to Crown Candy since I was a baby (not as a commuter from the suburbs but as a true city dweller). I have my fair share of memories socializing and enjoying their delicious treats with friends and family. I stuck to their BLT for years (until becoming a vegetarian). Even though I don't eat meat anymore, I have to highly recommend their BLT (thick, perfectly cooked bacon, piled high). Now I order the egg salad and it is GREAT. All of their ice cream is delicious (it's homemade!). Their sundaes are AMAZING (Lover's Delight, Banana Split, Hot Fudge sundae--oh god their hot fudge is outstanding). Shakes and malts are equally amazing. Recently I enjoyed a coffee shake made with their coffee ice cream. I can't even talk about it it was so good. Seriously, I'm gonna have dreams about Crown Candy tonight and I'm sure I'll be thinking about this all day now... read more

From the time I got word that I was going to St. Louis, all I heard was about this place with massive BLT's and great shakes. I really had no idea what to expect ... well, didn't expect a place that was a straight up blast from the past. I swear it looked like something from out of the 50's. Which is just it's charm. Cause it doesn't matter how old you are, the moment you walk in there you become a kid all over again. On to the food -- The BLT is nothing short of MASSIVE. And for a bacon lover, well let's just say it was angelic. The milkshakes are nothing short of spectacular. And if you can drink 10 of them in 30 minutes they're all free. But good luck. I will hit this joint each time I get to St. Louis. read more

Of course I like bacon. Of course I like milkshakes. This place goes beyond satisfying both cravings. The locals all told me that this is one of those need to go to places but warned me of how small and busy it gets. So I drove through the somewhat sketchy neighborhood on a weekday and got there around 1130 and found no problem with seating. The environment of this small place gives you an old school St Louis vibe. Very clean and employees were friendly. There was a mixed crowd of downtown business people, tourists (I figure since it was a school day and there were kids with them), blue collar workers, and other locals. I ordered the BLT as my friends have recommended. Usually don't order a BLT at a restaurant because the usual 2-3 pieces dont satisfy my meat cravings.. but this place probably had 20 pieces of bacon in this thing.. it was definitely worth the $8.. SO GOOD. Ordered a chocolate milkshake in a to go cup because it is a big size shake and I like to pace myself when drinking something that sweet. Thick and easily drinkable, sweet but surprisingly didnt make me sick. Only reason I didnt give full stars was because nobody refilled my water glass. If you are looking for a tasty lunch and yummy deserts, this is a must go place. If you are looking for a light and healthy meal, this wouldnt be for you. I like bringing friends and guests to Crown Candy Kitchen because it is like taking a trip back in time. This tiny corner shop is filled with old memorabilia and wooden furnishings. My importantly as a social worker who has served in north Saint Louis, I like showing people the economic/racial divide in Saint Louis that is evident on the drive there past vacant stores and collapsed homes. I most recently went to Crown Candy as my victory meal for finishing the Saint Louis Half Marathon. I knew a malt and the turkey bacon melt would revive me. The malts are so much better than traditional milkshakes and they are huge. One milkshake can fill four glasses so I always share. The sandwich is loaded with bacon but the bacon is really crispy and minimally greasy so I feel it is somewhat acceptable to eat all of it. The sandwich comes with potato chips. I don't really like potato chips and these ones are nothing special however they go great with the ice cream. I have always wanted to try their tamales but they struck me as a bizarre item to have on the menu and therefore I was weary. I was finally brave enough and am so glad I mustered up the courage. The corn casing and meat filling were both really flavorful. I will add tamales to my usual order from now on. read more

5 stars for their appropriately priced yummy malt. 2 stars for their out of control coronary clogging, uninspiring over priced ($10) blt. Imagining biting literally into a pack of fried bacon-- ok some of you may be drooling over the thought but my point is you can fry a whole pack of bacon at home for 1/3 the price- there is absolutely nothing special, magical, or creative about the sandwich other than they managed to stiff you $10 for it. Their long lines and tight quarters make it an additional turn off. I would definitely go and pick up a malt to go. Very very yummy. read more

Neat piece of history. Word to the wise- get here when they open at 10:30am. We did and got a table right away but by 10:45, there was a line out the door. We all tried a different shake- the choc malt, vanilla, cherry, and the Johnny Rabbit Special (great combo of flavors). We also tried the infamous BLT, a chili dog, and the reuben. The chili on the dog had great flavor, the Reuben was prob the best I've ever had, and the BLT, although pretty average in flavor, had a huge amount of bacon on it. Overall, the shakes and food were pretty good. We prob won't return again unless bringing out-of-towners, but recommend everyone try it at least once. read more

For people who are visiting out of town, do not expect a lot from this place. They have good ice cream. Their specialty Sundaes are rich and they put a lot of pecans in them, which is really nice for the price. What makes this place beautiful is also their simple sandwiches. I had the breaded chicken sandwich. Meat was very good and ingredients were fresh. Just the basics in it and tasted really good.
