1/5 -- Not Relaxing at All…read more I came on the Arrowhead Queen expecting a peaceful, relaxing boat ride around beautiful Lake Arrowhead. Unfortunately, it was the complete opposite. From almost the second the tour started, the captain/tour guide started talking -- and basically NEVER STOPPED. House after house after house: who owns this house, who used to live there, how much this house is worth, celebrity houses, more houses... honestly, I did not come here for a real-estate or celebrity-home tour. The narration was also extremely loud and nonstop. There wasn't even a minute here and there to just enjoy the sound of the water, look at the mountains and lake, and relax. After listening to the loud continuous talking for almost the entire ride, I actually ended up with a headache. Apparently I'm not the only person who feels this way, because other reviews mention that too much of the tour focuses on houses of rich/famous people and that the narration can be fast and difficult to enjoy. The sad part is that Lake Arrowhead itself is gorgeous. This could have been such a peaceful experience if they simply gave passengers some quiet time between the commentary. Tell us some interesting history, point out a few important places, then PLEASE stop talking for a while and let people enjoy the lake. If you love nonstop narration and hearing about who owns every house around the lake, you might enjoy it. If you're looking for a peaceful scenic boat ride where you can relax and enjoy Lake Arrowhead, I absolutely would not recommend this tour.

The tour is done in a group of about 14 people, with an electric cart taking you around facades, sound stages, and other parts of the studio. You can park in the studio garage for $20. We came on a Saturday and found plenty of free street parking nearby. We parked on Avalon Street, around the corner. The arrival experience felt somewhat disorganized. There are two sets of doors to enter the facility, but neither was clearly marked as an entrance. Inside, there is a Starbucks on the left, bathrooms, and what appears to be a ticketing area. We had purchased online tickets for $69 per person as California residents. After going through a metal detector--which went off because of both my wife's and my belts--we were hand-scanned. Several attendants asked to see our tickets without actually scanning them, which added to the feeling that the entrance process could have been better organized. The tour begins with an exhibit about the Warner brothers, who tried their hands at several businesses before becoming successful in the movie industry. The exhibit emphasizes their success in making movies about ordinary people and their everyday problems. I was surprised, however, that it didn't mention that the brothers were Jewish or the antisemitism their family experienced. Given the emphasis on their family background and connection to ordinary people, I thought that historical context was missing. Our guide, Divey, took us around several buildings and lots of facades where movies such as Spider-Man and Inception, as well as numerous television shows, were filmed. We went inside a sound studio and visited several Stage buildings. I ended up learning much more about how movies and television are actually made than I expected. The second part of the tour included a Central Park café surrounded by the Foley sound exhibit, a Friends exhibit, and a gift shop dedicated to the show. We enjoyed cappuccinos while admiring the incredibly realistic cake props. We then boarded an electric tram for the final part of the visit. This was where the signage became confusing again. There was no clear indication that the tram would take us to the Harry Potter exhibit but the line was for the Superman area, which required an additional ticket we didn't have. There was also a minor seating mix-up: an attendant initially told the four of us to sit on the same bench and then asked us to move because only three people were allowed there. The Harry Potter exhibit itself was excellent. Harry's cupboard-under-the-stairs, the chimney with Hogwarts invitations, the Sorting Hat, and especially the Potions shop were spectacular. Overall, we had a great time. Compared with the Universal Studios tour, Warner Bros. felt much less crowded and more contemplative. We also noticed far fewer children than we typically see at Universal, which contributed to the quieter atmosphere. If you're interested in how movies and television are actually made--and especially if you enjoy classic Hollywood, Friends, or Harry Potter--this is a very worthwhile experience. Just expect some confusing signage and a somewhat disorganized arrival process. This version keeps the review positive but credible: the criticisms are specific rather than overwhelming, while the strongest parts of your experience get more emphasis.

We just arrived home from a FABULOUS TRIP OF A LIFETIME to Ireland!…read more It has been one of my best friend's lifelong dream to go to Ireland, she has Terminal Cancer and was put on Hospice so time was of the essence. In just a matter of 2 weeks, Kaitlin worked her magic and organized a phenomenal 8 days in Ireland complete with Chauffeur service to and from LAX. Our requests and questions, looking back, were probably not the easiest to answer, but Kaitlin was AMAZING at researching and answering each question in what seemed like SUPER SPEED! For example, our trip consisted of spreading my friend's Mother's ashes, Kaitlin researched and gave us absolutely ALL the information we needed to legally transport the ashes and spread them in Ireland. We had a Private Chauffeured Tour while in Ireland, our Chauffeur Andy was such a perfect match for us, you would have thought Kaitlin had called and requested him specifically for us, which we surely wouldn't have doubted considering her amazing personalized service she gave us while planning AND while we were in Ireland. Kaitlin kept in touch with us well right up to departure, checked us in for our flights, gave us imperative travel tips that only someone with her travel experience could offer. While we were in Ireland, she absolutely kept checking in with us which was beyond appreciated. I have to say, Kaitlin went above and beyond with her service to us, right down to telling me, "Call me for ANYTHING no matter what time it is, I will be here for you." I could go on praising Kaitlin and the entire Laura's Travel Services for an outstanding job dealing with us, our trip went over perfectly with no complaints or hiccups. I suppose I should end by at least mentioning our accommodations in Ireland were all 5 star and breathtaking. Our tours were customized according to what was most important to my friend and her ability. We even did a cruise below the Cliffs Of Moher which was Genius of Kaitlin and we later found from others that not everyone gets to go on. Again, Kaitlin's vast travel experience made her a perfect agent for us and made our trip the PERFECT Trip Of A Lifetime! Thank you Kaitlin and Laura's Travel.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience here at Rubel Castle. Our host, guide,…read moreand local "Rubelligent" volunteer, Ms. Kathleen had all the intel about this historical property. She was so knowledgeable and helped set the stage for us to slip into a forgotten era and get a glimpse of how imagination met inventiveness with a DIY charm. ~ A LITTLE BACKSTORY FOR YOU ~ It's not pronounced Rubel as Barney from Flintstones. Rather, it's like Target is to Targét when we are trying to be fancy. So that's Rubel as in "Roo-bell." Unlike modern-day construction, Rubel Castle wasn't built overnight. It was made of collected recyclables and construction rubble that spanned many decades and took several friends and volunteers to build it. For Michael, however, the lifetime inspiration was first sparked at the age of 9. His love for canons was where it started and the rest is history you can hear about on the tour. But don't just show up like we did randomly one day. To book, visit RubelTours.org and make a reservation. ~ OUR TOUR EXPERIENCE ~ It's as if Michael Rubel, the creator and mastermind of this enchanted dominion had intended it to be--magical. Built in the castle period of wood and tin, every corner captured our interests, from antique cars to the 1890's Seth Thomas Tower Clock with a unique backstory (and only six in existence today). There were old vending machines, tools, trinkets, and machinery that time had long forgotten. Did I mention there was a drawbridge? Yes, and a dungeon too. I was just waiting for a dragon to come swoop down on us next. Walk in the footsteps of famous visitors like Alfred Hitchcock, Dwight Eisenhower, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope. It's a feast for the eyes no matter where you glance. I particularly enjoyed the bottle house that Michael built in 1968 as his "home" as a kid. That independent spirit was quite charming to see. ~ WATERCOLOR NATURESCAPE ~ We were fortunate to have our gracious host lead us on a tour and organize a special art crafting experience outdoors. It was absolutely lovely beneath the trees and between rusted vintage cars from the turn of the century. We each got a small canvas to paint our flowers in watercolor. (This particular experience takes place in the Spring and Fall, weather permitting.) We heard the squirrels rattling in the leaves and birds chirped and sang in the trees above. We discovered that peacocks apparently originated from this property, compliments of Michael Rubel. And did I mention that on the far side of the property, a custom garden was in full bloom? BOOK A TOUR Help support the Glendora Historical Society and keep this magnificently unique city-castle maintained. It's worth it.

But somehow we never knew there was a mining history there and that it was very prolific in the 1870s. The tour is worth the cost, and starts with a history of the equipment and the area as well as the information about how the mining equipment and the mine were preserved. There is a demonstration of how to pan for gold, and there is a lot of old equipment as well as a shop with relics, books and western style homestead-ish goods. A nice variety of options. The walk through the mine would have been better with a smaller group where we wouldn't feel rushed. It was cool that down in the mine there is still equipment, and you can view down into the hole where the miners would be lowered to work for the day. The mine is very dark - but also well lit and as your eyes adjust there is no problem watching where you walk and seeing the historic equipment down in the mine. The tour is actually 2 shafts that connect, as you finish one mine area then the tour guide takes you into the other mine shaft and at the end of the tour you exit on the other side of the mountain- pretty cool. You must be mobile, not claustrophobic, this is a child friendly tour but please impress to your kids that listening is key, some portions of the tour it may be more difficult to hear the guide. At one point they lights are turned off so that the guide can demonstrate the use of a candle to iluminate the way, it's a short period but might be scary to young visitors if not reassured. I recommend this tour for tourists, locals, adults and kids - great to learn the history of Julian and the mines that were there during the gold rush. I believe they said - more than 200!
