Albert led us to several places less traveled by tourists and sampled many different foods. The fresh mango with lime and chile at the open-air market was refreshing along with the coconut water we purchased that was cut right in front of you. We sampled various flavored nuts and chili gummies at one stop. We also had fish ceviche tostadas, grilled marlin tacos, carne asada tacos with handmade tortillas that were amazing. Finishing up the tour we had agua frescas, authentic Baja-style fried fish tacos, and freshly-made churros. Walking to our next stop always helped with our full bellies. Come hungry to this tour because the portions are not skimpy. Wear good walking shoes as the sidewalks are often uneven. I felt this was a fast paced walking tour but he did ensure everyone kept up and would slow or stop for those behind. Overall this was a fun and delicious tour. She offers to plan the day/trip for you but I am type A and like to research on my own. I came up with a list of places we were interested in and she shared her expertise but never seemed pushy. Do not stress if communication is a little delayed, she is on top of it and responds immediately when it matters! We had some free time before our next reservation and she quickly found us a nearby winery to fill the gap (and they were great choices too). Even Anthony Bourdain thought so... and come on, if Anthony Bourdain makes a statement about food, it must be truth. The funny thing is, as much as the culinary arts have grown in town there really aren't that many culinary schools in town that aren't crazy expensive private art schools. It's a bummer that people have to go across the border to get this sort of training and education. That's why I'm a fan of this Culinary Art School. The quality of chefs that come out of here is amazing, some of them work at the finest restaurants in town. Aside from the usual culinary school programs and degrees they also offer small workshops where anyone can sign up (last one I heard of was a beer appreciation course) if this is something that might interest you go ahead and sign up on their website so you can get the newsletter!

His motto was always "Give me a couple of wine barrels, a wooden plank over them, two old Italian guys and a couple of yeller dogs, and that is my idea of a tasting room". Well, the Valle de Guadalupe has some spots that are near as up scale as current Napa and Sonoma. But WAY off the beaten path and with the same kind of charm and passion that wine making seemed to have in the pioneering days of mid-century Northern California. Having been on lots of wine tours and tastings, it isn't often I find I learn a lot about wine making and its history. Chris, part owner of BTK, was our tour-guide and did a marvelous job of talking about the history of the valley, growing conditions, wine makers, local history that influenced wine making technology, etc. I found I learned a lot; in part because Chis is a very engaging story teller. The best part was the wine and the wine makers. We were VERY pleasantly surprised at the quality of the wines we tasted. Eleven wines total at two incredible wine making facilities, and every one a winner! Wish we could have taken home a lot more than we did. We had the good fortune of meeting the owners of Vena Cava, who clearly enjoy people and love their craft and the local industry they are building. The 2012 Reserve is easily one of the best wines I've ever had. And the winery is...well...unique, with a great story. Chris and Jen, thank you for a wonderful day. My friends and I weren't too sure of how the process would be since they picked us up after we walked across the border. We booked our rides through WhatsApp and the communication was super easy. They were super responsive, and the day before our designated rides, they shared the driver's number for us to connect directly. Our driver down to Valle was named Elias and made the whole process so simple! He picked us right outside of where we came out after crossing the border. He was super friendly and wanted to make sure we were comfortable for the drive. He told us a little bit about Valle and how he's lived there for 25 years. On my way back, I had a different driver, who was Natalie. She was super nice and the ride back was so quick, probably because it was the morning and traffic wasn't too bad in Tijuana yet. She was helpful in directing me to find the line to cross the border. Without the direction from her, I would have definitely been confused. They made this whole process so seamless! They were on time and available for all the questions I had leading up to the rides as well. I will for sure use them in the future any time I'm traveling somewhere driving distance in Mexico!
