Plus, they can be adapted to any fitness level so anyone can do them. I feel ten years younger (I'm 40-something) and have been able to leverage my overall fitness into my other sports, like skiing, biking, and everyday activities. My fellow members are great people and I look forward to seeing them...I feel like I've made 50 new friends since joining. One phrase sums it up for me...life changing. I has tried various forms of exercise since having my children, but couldn't stay committed to any of them. I had heard so much about CrossFit from friends and, honestly, they were kind of annoying about their enthusiasm. But, I figured, if they couldn't shut up about it I guess it works. They certainly seemed committed, and commitment to a gym is what I needed. Although a lot of people get hooked on CrossFit immediately, I was not one of them. The barbell movements felt awkward to me (I'd never touched a bar before in my life) and, looking at the women at the gym, I wasn't convinced that I loved the results. I want to be skinny, not muscular, I thought. Maybe I'm in the wrong place. Maybe I should just go back to yoga. But I told myself I'd give it a try...give it a few months or at least a few weeks and see what happened. And then, Mel Ockerby happened. She was my first trainer after completing my elements course and I quickly realized she was one of the most inspiring, positive and supportive people I had ever met. She didn't make me feel like I was doing things wrong...she complimented me on what I was doing right and then made the most thoughtful and spot-on suggestions for how I could improve. During those early days, Mel's vivacious personality and sense of humor kept me coming back day after day. I just wanted to hang out with her and I didn't want to let her down. Over the next few months, I did keep going back -- and what happened surprised me. I started getting stronger and faster. Those barbell movements didn't feel as awkward anymore. In fact, I actually started to like them...to love them. I looked at the women around me and I now wanted to look like them so that I could lift like them. I stopped idealizing the conventional sense of skinny beauty and started wanting my body to be strong and capable instead. I became a true CrossFitter and I had Mel to thank for getting me there. Almost a year into my CrossFit journey, Mel left the box we were at to work at Reebok. When she told me she was leaving, it literally made me cry. "You changed my life!" I told her. I didn't want her to leave but I understood that she needed to go on to bigger and better things. Although I feared my commitment to CrossFit would wane without her, I surprised myself by continuing along. But I missed Mel! When I heard she was opening her own box (Daybreak), well, it was like a dream come true. I have come to realize over the past two years that Mel is THE BEST CrossFit trainer there is. The best. And it's for those same reasons that kept me going back to class day after day during those first few months. Her warm, infectious voice and the bolt of self-confidence you feel when she tells you you are doing a great job (and remembers and says your name, even if you are brand new). Her awesome cues and advice without sounding condescending or "judgey." It's all there, still...and this time, the place is her own. Check it out...even if you think this "CrossFit thing" isn't right for you. You'll get hooked on Mel...and then on the feeling of fitness, community and wellness that comes into your life when you start to train with her.

Sometimes I can tell there are information about people and how they talk about one other are misleading. When I'm there for seven months now, not a lot of people ask me questions. The talk goes on based on their observation of what I do at the gym. The bad: As a deaf person, I feel somewhat discriminated because how they find that I have a disability. I notice people think I'm disadvantaged (I don't blame them, but it is wrong to think that way) which leads to erroneous assumptions towards me. I truly appreciate their attempts to assist me in some ways. I do recognize that and tried to signal to them I don't want them to 'help me for free because I have a disability'. After series of events led to a severe misunderstanding of my intentions. My intention is to follow my own program and flourish from that. Whereas I only go to MetFit to lift hard and definitely gotten their attention. Once again, I don't blame them for wanting to work with me. From my previous experiences gives me a clear boundaries towards people and I like to stay quiet. To top it off I like to give respect to others as much I can. My boundaries were not well received by some gym members there. I believe it's some kind of privilege they have in order to demonstrate "who is running the gym". (09/27/26)

The coaches were very knowledgeable and accommodating to my fitness goals and my crazy schedule. The other athletes are encouraging and welcome. As a triathlete, looking for some fun off season training, I decided to give this whole CrossFit thing a try. Having very little weight lifting experience, the coaches helped me safely learn the various movements. Once up to speed, I asked for some advice on some things to focus on to help me in my Tri races. We developed an entire personalized plan for me to help develop the muscle groups that needed the most work for my goals. As the Tri season came this year, I again asked to modify certain workouts so I could get the most out of all my training. The coaches were more than happy to help! As a consequence to all of this over and above coaching, this year I have won my age group in all 3 of my triathlons so far this year, had a PR in my 5k and won the season opener triathlon overall. Additionally, I developed some great friendships with the other athletes.

I've dropped in a few times over the years just to see how the Box is evolving, as I also do with…read moreother local Crossfits, just to compare them all over time. These are just my observations of the current experience. 1. Rusted/Old Bars - Most of the lifting bars (Men/Women) are in bad shape. Some have rust on them. I've been to many places that take care of their bars and lots of the time have all the same brand. There are numerous brands of bars in various levels of disrepair. 2. Rowers in Disrepair - They have a limited number of rowers (5?) of which are in really bad condition. One didn't register me rowing while another's chain was loose in the chamber with no tension, essentially not a functioning rower. 3. Assault Bikes in Disrepair - They also have limited Assault Bikes that are also in various levels of disrepair from broken foot pedals to unmaintained chains which is evident when pedaling. 4. Dirty/Separated Floor Tiles - The floor doesn't seem to have been cleaned in a long time, there were patches of mold in the area nearest the kettlebells. There was significant dirt in a lot of places as well as old tape for marking lines. The floor tiles have significantly come apart in many places. The widest I noticed was enough to place my hand inside and touch the concrete below. 5. Slated/Uneven Floor - The floor is uneven nearest the two side bay doors which has about 4 workout spots. So uneven that when I put my barbell down, the barbell rolled away from me pretty fast. 6. Filthy Bathrooms - Has to have the filthiest bathrooms of any CrossFit that I've visited and I've been to a lot! There were remnants of previous explosive visits to the toilet evident in the toilet and outside of it. 7. Unfriendly Coach - I went to a morning class and didn't receive the friendliest welcome. The Coach seemed as if they couldn't be bothered with me. This Coach teaches the early morning class at 5:30am. 8. Bad Wallballs - They are the cheap wallballs in which a lot of them have sand-like debris that falls out of them when you use them which gets in your eyes. Most are weight lopsided meaning that the weight isn't evenly distributed, common in the cheaper wallballs. 9. Bloody/Dirty Tapped Rigs - Some of the rigs have tape for a better grip. The tape grips have dried blood soaked into them. All were extremely dirty and hadn't been re-tapped in who knows how long. 10. Dirty Mats - The Box has the three-section folding mats as well as some larger black foam mats to lay out for HSPUs, for example, and they were all dirty. Didn't seem like they had been cleaned in a while. 11. Dumb Bells/Rubber Plates Broken - A lot of dumb bell heads are loose or the rubber coating is coming off due to wear and tear. Many of the rubber plates are in poor condition from the center metal ring being loose or the plate itself just being in poor condition or both. 12. Limited Class Times - There's a 5:30am, 9:30am, 12:30pm, 4:30 and 6:30am. You're out of luck if you want more flexibility for your schedule. Many of the area CrossFits have a more convenient morning class offering. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this Box. I've visited all the ones surrounding this one in the area and would recommend any of them over this Box. For instance, CrossFit Tilt and CrossFit City Line have state-of-the-art facilities with dedicated coaches. Everything is fairly clean and the Coaches are super friendly/experienced. The Drop-In fees are comparable and the entire communities at both are fantastic. The owners are all experienced CrossFitters that have made it to high-level competitions. They actually plan events together outside the Box frequently. There is a lot of parking at both places and they have doors to enter the facility. Oh, forgot to mention that CrossFit Newton doesn't have a dedicated front door, they have a bay door which you have to open and close in the colder weather. I also took some time and talked with some of the other members. There's a lot of drama and clicks in this Box. I will say that a lot of the members are fairly nice and pleasant. Most go because it's really close to them or because they are used to it.
