Before I found CrossFit Sausalito, I was having a serious fitness identity crisis. No joke. Here is the list of "intro classes" I tried in the month prior to coming here: the Dailey Method (shudder), Marin Adventure Boot Camp, TRX classes, yoga, and personal training. None of it was right. I was losing it trying to figure out a routine that would fit with my schedule, be efficient and effective, and keep my easily-bored self constantly motivated.. something that was NEVER going to happen slogging on an elliptical for an hour with a magazine. I was an avid Spinner and I knew I liked weight lifting, but I was burning out and needed a jump start in my fitness life.
Enter CF Sausalito. There is a range of things you'll find about CrossFit in the media and on the internet, some of it not true at all and some of it very true! But the thing is it all starts with the box you choose and the coaches and community within it. Coach Sean, Coach Collin, Coach Becca, and Coach Shannon are knowledgeable, motivating, and ALWAYS supportive no matter what level you're at. I can come to them with any question I have, from technique to nutrition, and they are always there to help. The members at CF Sausalito are also amazing... truly supportive of each other and always cheering each other on. You feel like you're a part of a team, and everyone else's accomplishments feel like your own.
The thing about CrossFit is each day is WILDLY different from the next so your body is always being challenged and can't ever settle into that dreaded plateau mode that is so easy to find when you're working out on your own. Each person has their individual strengths and weaknesses, so one day you may come in last on a WOD ("Workout of the Day"), and the next day you can totally kill it. There is a constant sense of competition, among each other but mostly against yourself, which is a HUGE motivator as you learn all the different skills and pursue improving on them.
Expect to run through a range of workouts that include running, rowing (machine), plyometrics, Olympic weightlifting, kettlebells, pull-ups, and beyond... all workouts are scaleable depending on your level of fitness so if, for example, you can't do an unassisted pull-up (I can't yet!) there are assistance bands at different levels that will help you build up to a true pull-up.
If you're curious about CF in any way, TRY IT, I promise, and you can't find better than CF Sausalito!
*On a non-fitness-related note: I've always felt kind of socially isolated as a late-20-something living away from the City in often-sleepy Marin County for the past six years. CF Sausalito is the single place in Marin I've found thus far with such a high concentration of people that also live/work in Marin and are in and around my age group (and many age groups!). Fitness aside, it's really neat to meet and get to know so many other locals on a daily basis! (Bonus: If you're single in Marin, one word: yum!) read more
