I'm not sure if much has changed but paying under $200/month in DC seemed like a bargain to me. Also, I think it was very smart for the owner to invest in a box in this neighborhood as it will gentrify exponentially over the next several years. I noticed the classes started getting busier and busier each month I was there as word caught on and more people moved to the area. The only negatives I can speak of is that sometimes our instructor slept in and didn't make it to the early morning session. Getting up at 5 AM for nothing on several occasions pissed me off. Also, I can't speak of the community. DC tends to be a city where people keep to themselves. Down in Macon, GA where I was a member there was definitely a sense of community. At this box, it's just people running in, working out for an hour, and heading home. I did attend a happy hour event one night and only 3 of us showed up. I'm not sure I'd call that a tight community but it has nothing to do with the box itself, just DC people in general.

As someone that was new to crossfit, I was pleased how dedicated they were to ensuring proper technique. People are welcome at all levels of ability. I enjoy the atmosphere and comradery at the gym. It's bright and most people are excited to get sweaty and workout. It's not too crowded, although its hit or miss on whether there are 5 or 14 people in your class. I've heard that our gym is quite a bit larger than other DC crossfit gyms, which is especially nice for barbell movements. They have all the equipment necessary, which is in normal working order. A con that I think of is that the place isn't the cleanest. My hands are filthy after each workout. A dog, or sometimes two have been in the gym during training, which isn't great for people like me with allergies (lots of dog hair everywhere). The dogs don't interfere with working out, which is good.

I've found a tremendously well-run, safe, fun, inclusive space to train and grow. The owner is phenomenal at working with her athletes to make sure each is pushing themselves in a safe but challenging way, and routinely suggests modifications to scale up or down workouts unique to the athletes ability (or injury). CFHers are all skill/ability levels and coaches are as excited to work with someone who's never set foot at a gym as someone who's been going to the Open for years. It's a great place! Worth checking out

Being in a class/group environment is really a big change from working out in my basement. Everyone that I've interacted with there is very very helpful. The coaches are amazing, giving personal attention to everyone. I've been working on my form and learning the right way to get fit. Here's a tip that I've learned since going to CFH: Check your pride at the door. Unless you've done crossfit before, you have a lot of acronyms to learn, and you will likely be corrected a few times with your form and such. You're learning correct form, so it's for the best. The gym is clean, well organized and a great place to get fit.

The price was in-line with other options. Leon was personable, knowledgeable, and helpful. He made sure to provide us with everything that we needed to know and was efficient in providing us with the training needed to get certified in CPR, comfortable using an AED, and helping someone who may be choking. Leon shared knowledge and best practices that he had accumulated over 15 years of experience. His gym and fitness classes also looked legit and there was a community feel to his fitness center that you don't get at many locations.

I have been training with him for about six months now, and in that time I have found him to be a highly energetic and motivational trainer who is very thoughtful about the workouts he puts together. When I first came in for a fitness evaluation, I was pretty nervous because, frankly, I've never been very good at this fitness stuff. Fortunately, Leon was super welcoming and made me feel at ease, even when I had trouble completing my first workout (I barely made it past the warm up, not because it was a crazy workout or anything like that but because my body just wasn't used to much physical exertion). Leon very patiently helped me push through all that. In addition to personal training with Leon, I have also taken a few boxing classes with Coach Herb. Those classes are a lot of fun and I would also recommend them. I should add that Leon is a good guy who lives in the area and is invested in the local community. I live a few blocks away and am very happy to be able to support a local business.

Staff is none pressure, and generally at the desk :-D The gym itself is fine for what it is. Late-night hours mean fewer people, easier access to machines, and a more relaxed workout. It's not intuitive, not particularly close, and can feel annoying if you're already trying to squeeze in a quick workout. Overall, it works best if you're a night owl and already familiar with the area. Not my favorite Planet Fitness, but manageable with the right timing.

Many of the members were very friendly, making it a point to say hi and check on me as a first timer. 2) Workout: I know their workouts change, but the one I went to at 4:30pm on a Thursday in May involved five different stations- boxing, weights, jumping, kettle balls, and a shuffle run. You line up behind a color dot based on the size of the weights you want to work with. For this workout, we went around the room six times- two starting with easier weights, two on medium, and two heavy. We spent 40 seconds at each station with 20 seconds to transition. It was a great workout and it kept my heart rate up. 3) Coach: She knew her workout and was super friendly and approachable. 4) Space: There's cubbies to keep your belongings, a drinking fountain, and restrooms. It was difficult to get a class time. But if you miss a class because you're a couple minutes late, or wake up sick,l or sore, or if there just isn't parking available, they will charge you fee and you'll never know until you check your bank account. I cancelled the my membership because getting a class was such a pain, but they continued to charge me for months. I tried to ask for a refund, they refused even though they knew that I hadn't been at a class for months. I eventually contacted my bank asking for help. Ask them to print the contract for you and read the fine print before you sign anything! Better yet, join W0RK instead.
