Where do I start? I was in Brunswick attending classes at the training center and was scheduled to be here for three months. It's not important to mention why, but it is important to mention I was absolutely miserable to be back here (this is my third time attending the training center).
Now I have worked out for the better part of the last thirty years, but because of work I fell out of my workout routine and was in poor shape (I hadn't worked out for close to a year and a half). I was slow, weak, and just not motivated. I figured during the next three months I should take advantage of the regular work schedule and get back into the swing of things. I should add that years of prior military service, and several military deployments had taken a toll on my knees, back, neck, and just about all of my joints (this is important and you will see why shortly). I had pain somewhere at all times during the day whether I was getting out of bed, standing, climbing stairs, I think you get the point.
Now I was worried about my injuries because of the warnings you always hear regarding crossfit and the exercises/movements involved (usually from people that don't do crossfit). I just didn't want to end up worse then when I started. In the end I decided to give Crossfit Brunswick a shot because of the great reviews they have received online. I pulled up their website and shot the owner Kyle an email. To be honest I was surprised at the speedy response (since then I have emailed other CF Box owners and in some cases I have never received a reply). A few days later I was starting my ramp up class at CFB. Kyle was down to earth, and crazy knowledgeable about everything crossfit. I'll never forget what he said to me about what his ultimate goal for Crossfit Brunswick was (CFB). He said I have everyone from young kids to grandparents that have joined the CFB family. In our family we have members that want to be competitive, and others who just want to be fit for a variety of reasons. I want our competitors to win, our law enforcement members to be strong enough to get a bad guy off of them that intends to do them harm, and I want my CFB grandparents to be able to keep up with their high energy grandchildren, basically I want everyone to be happy, healthy, and safe. Once I heard what CFB was all about, I knew I made the right decision. Kyle made a point to tell me that once you step into the CFB Box, it's a requirement to leave my ego checked at the door. He said that there was a good possibility that one day I would be right next to a female half my size doing a WOD (workout of the day) and she would be doing more weight than I was. He was sure to explain that some of the movements were very complex and awkward, but not to worry because working at a lower weight would allow me to get my form and the movement correct, and to get stronger at an appropriate pace.
After my ramp up I joined the regular WOD's. Let me tell you, everyone was extremely friendly and supportive. In no time I felt like part of the family. The members are incredible and the coaches are second to none!!!! Coach Kyle (owner), Coach James, and Coach Austin will get you to where you need to be without injury as long as you listen to their instruction and check your ego at the door. Getting to the 515pm class was the highlight of my day. I've always lifted weights, but working out at CFB under Kyle, James and Austin took me to a whole new level in a fraction of the time it usually takes me to get back to where I need to be (when I've taken time off from working out). It became an addiction, I simply never had this much fun getting my @## handed to me during a workout.
After two months of CFB, not only did I not have one single injury, but my knees, back, neck are pain free (thanks to the attention and dedication of the coaches making sure I was using proper form, and using proper weight). It seems my body has become overall much stronger than it has been in years, and the result is a pain free body. Each coach has their own unique way of training and I took advantage of each of their strengths (mobility, gymnastic moves, strength training, etc). With their guidance, I was hitting new personal records frequently. Sometimes it seemed my CFB family members and coaches were more excited than I was about my new personal records, that's the type of place it is!
If you are attending the training center, are a local, want to get in shape, want to look great, want to be able to keep up with the grandchildren, or just want to fill an hour of your time in the morning or evening with good times and good friends while doing something great your body will thank you for, then reach out to Kyle and give CFB a shot. My only complaint, and it's a pretty big one, is Kyle and the CFB family has set the standard that I will hold every other CF Box too extremely high! Damn it Kyle, I'm going to have separation anxiety when I leave the area and can't hit CFB daily!! read more
